Thank you very much for the heads-up! I was just thinking about these games, wondering how much they'd be on Steam. I think they're also free on Beth's game store. I remember downloading them from it years ago.

That's what I thought. I just remember them also being free there.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory as well:

Germany is excluded from claiming but if you install SteamDB Extension, you can click "Add free license" on this page and add it to your library anyways:

Edit: this might have worked for me, because even though I am currently in Germany, my Steam account is set to Austria.

Doesn't work for me.
I wonder why they'd exclude Germany from this game.

The Wolfenstein games have been problematic in the past because of the Nazi symbols and so on. Many of the Wolfenstein games have either been censored or prohibited in Germany in the past. While this practice isn't quite as restrictive anymore today and the newer games are uncensored now even in Germany, this might be the reason, why they decided to prohibit this one.

This isn't as harsh anymore. It was always allowed to use these symbols in historic, educational or artistic context as long as it was no glorification of the Nazi regime. For a long time, games were not considered historic, educational or artistic but movies were. But this has changed a few years ago and many games have since then been uncensored/unbanned.
In this special case, I think it might be a "better safe than sorry" situation by the publisher or Steam.

It's right there in black and white. The wolfenstein games have always been banned in Germany. Right from the first one, "Wolfenstein 3D" (which is the one that had the massive outrage that helped spark the law in the first place).
It wasn't until 2018 that the law was "relaxed", because of how the reception was of the censorship in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Now, games with Nazi imagery can be submitted for review on a case-by-case basis, but you have to remember, this game was released in 2003, where the law was very much in full effect.

Which is more or less what I was saying. New Order (2014), Old Blood (2015), New Colossus (2017) and Youngblood (2019) are all uncensored/unbanned now in Germany. They probably never submitted the older games for review due to assumed low interest.
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory however has always been free to download directly from the developer:
https://www.splashdamage.com/games/wolfenstein-enemy-territory/
If you're capable of reading german:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfenstein:_Enemy_Territory#Juristische_Einschr%C3%A4nkungen
It basically says, that the original, unmodded version is free from Nazi symbols and Rated M/A content.
And a lot of movies were also exempt from that law long before 2003 due to historic, educational or artistic context, even though games with similar context weren't.

Couldn't load it myself via steamdb / Steam because of Germany.
ProtonVPN (Free) download, netherlands, cyberghostVPN via Browser extension to another location in netherlands and open steamdb.
Its a free to play game, the use of VPN doesn't hurt anyone so yeah. works.

thanks, anyone got any idea why these are given away for free? Bethesda isn't this kind when it comes to giveaways.

The two old TES games have been free in the Bethesda launcher for a long time and WS:ET has always been free to download directly from the developer. Since Bethesda will retire its launcher and allow people to migrate their games to Steam starting tomorrow, they had to put the games on Steam as well:

https://et.splatterladder.com/?mod=serverlist you can use this to see real player counts on servers, but yeah, game is unfortunately way past its prime, though its gameplay is still unmatched to this day in my opinion

Without any filters, red number on Player list represents bots apart from actual players on the server, to filter it out completely go to Properties tab and click twice on "Bots on Server", though it will also stop showing servers that might have enough of players but for example one or two bots.

For anyone getting into Daggerfall because of this, check out Daggerfall Unity!

Forget these half-assed attempts of Steam and Bethesda to look good in the public eye.

TES 2 on Steam seems to be version 1.0. It's possible to patch it with the latest official patch (which must be run under DOS, btw) that would allow Unity version to be installed. Of course, it's easier to simply download the patched version, but the option is there.

But what about "The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard" and "An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire"?

Yooo I didn't see ET got released on steam. Apparently there's an esports community already for it even. Coincidentally I was just playing a week or so ago.
If anyone has issues with ET running properly or wants some extra improvements to the game, check out ETLegacy. Those guys basically have been continuing to keep it updated for years and how there have still been people playing this whole time.
Another nice thing is they have a a list of no bots servers. You can check it out here - https://www.etlegacy.com/
