For those of you wondering, Shadowrun Returns Deluxe includes the original Shadowrun Returns, plus a DLC pack that includes the soundtrack and a PDF file with some concept art and short stories.
If you only have Shadowrun Returns you can redeem the HB key and receive the DLC.

Compared to the other two, it is more like a proof of concept with very minimal room for the player to roleplay (for example, if you did not take assault rifles as your main gun skill, good luck clearing the final missin which requires you to use a special assault rifle to kill enemies). The story is nice and it at least teaches you the basics of the series. Also, the sale on the other two parts is pretty damn nice.

Yea it's a good intro to the series and the setting, at least was for me. And then Dragonfall blew it away in pretty much every way :)

Been a long time since I played the first one, but wasn't it an option to hand the assault rifle to one of the NPC/hired gun party members who have the appropriate skill ?

No. You could hire a special party member who had one or two points in the skill and was armed with the rifle as well. His aim sucked but it got really bad at the final boss fight, where the longer the fight dragged on, the more enemies were on the field and the only way to clear them was this weapon.
