I think the site should have negative points to help with people getting points from fake giveaways...

For example, someone makes afake giveaway for 3 copies of Skyrim. This gives everyone lots of points for a giveaway that isn't real.

I'm smart and I figure it's fake so I don't enter, but because of the fake giveaway(s), I now have (for example) 10 points more than I should.

Currently the site doesn't remove the points generated for fake giveaways, but this is what I would like to see.

Let's say I use those 10 points on top of 40 points I already had to enter for a legit Dead Island giveaway.

I now have zero points.

Then, when the fake giveaways are removed, I still lose those points, but negatively.

As in I now have -10 points and I have to wait for 10 points to come back from points generation.

I think this would help with points flooding from fake giveaways.

Thoughts?

There is definitely too many points floating around. I haven't been able to go below 220 in quite some time now :/

ya and with negative points people will be going up and down in points as new giveaways are made and fake ones are removed which might also encourage people to save up a minimum of points at all times just in case an expensive game they really want is in a giveaway

Just like me

though tbh I don't enter every single game... and most of the games available don't appeal to me

Heh, that's actually why I don't always spend points. The point I'm making in my post is actually silly since I don't care about my points at all so if anything I'm really just saying I'm picky lol

Apparently so.

right now after all my filtering I probably have less than 10 different games showing up in my list

that and it has got to a point where you could enter possibly over 1000 giveaways and then win someting like a humble bundle

if that is the case I'd rather win something big

but then again that is just me

it would still be abused for cause people would still be able to USE points, they'd just go into debt afterward.
Really we should only get points for ended, confirmed giveaways.

I think this is the better idea to fix the problem.

I like this idea too I don't know why it hasn't been implemented it might be because if it was like that points would not be awarded until the gifter sends the gift and the reciever confirms which could take some time

Because if big ticket items have long ending times, like 4 weeks, then point generation would be near impossible. I wouldn't want to force people to have big gifts end in 2-3 days just so people get the points faster.

maybe but if we made it like that everyone would make sure to be more conservative with points just in case they need them for a big game, it would be like what we have now but people will always look into the future like, "Do i really want to spend 10 of my 60 points for this one game? It might come in handy later." leading to less entries in the non AAA games that someone might really want

I think you underestimate just how slow point generation would be if everyone had to wait 4-5 days for X amount of points. At 5% of gifts, let's say one day 10 giveaways end. Nine are worth 10P and one is 30P. You would have only received 2P for that day.

sounds good to me, Ive always wanted this site to be like a "I can enter for a game everynow and then" rather than every day

Lets say on one day 10 giveaways were started. Nine are worth 10P and one is 30P. You would have only received 2P for that day.

So whats the different? Oo

There might be some lag for a couple weeks while the system shifts from points-at-opening to points-at-close, but the rate at which points are accrued shouldn't be affected by when in the operation the points are awarded. The only effect should be fewer points from fewer fake giveaways, which is exactly the point.

I think you mean privilege. He can still do some good even with though that low feedback score might prevent him from ever making a giveaway here.

yah I gotta get that fixed

And there wasn't a rule against it at the time, but in my defense people really should read the description of giveaways they enter

Nope. He would have every right to do that if the giveaways were private, and he should have probably asked for a re-roll when the winner didn't meet the requirements (instead of opening another giveaway with the same game).

It's funny that every time I see a thread complaining about "too many points", it's always the same people complaining.

If you have too many points, just don't use them and stop bitching! cg knows what he's doing, so does Cult and the other (new) mods.

It's funny how it's always the same people that are always bitching about bitching. It's always the same no matter what so I thought I'd jump in and take my fair share at bashers like yourself.

Doesn't seem like you waste anytime with your points so I guess you don't have time to bother gifters with a small thank you

No need to make it personal - and it's actually the first time I comment on a thread that raised this discussion, and I've always considered that spamming a topic with 'ty' is worthless unless you really mean it or have something to say (not just here, in many other forums aswell).

The thing is, I'm pretty sure the large majority of the people are fine with how the points are being generated but just don't say it. However, every time a thread about "too many points" is raised there's 90% chance that the same ~5 guys will be there (no, this number is not based on any hard evidence, but you get the point).

Apart from that, people should be more concerned about enjoying the site than second-guessing every decision admin/mods make (that's highly annoying, if you've ever been in that position to know).

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Unfortunately I have been in that position before. I kind of wish I wasn't. I don't think gifters really consider all thank yous as spam but really more as an acknowledgement that your not just entering a free game but a game someone took their time to get and put it up for grabs at the mercy of luck.

Just saying, because this would be a more elegant solution than deducting points after the fact.

Terrible idea, People will just create more giveaways to get out of negetive points. DOesn't solve anything except poor average joe feels like he is getting punished for having negative points.

Seriously do you post this nonsense every other day? stop whining about the point system.

Maybe not giving out any points at all until the gifts are actually received instead of distributing when created? I'm not sure if that would work.

1 decade ago

I like this idea. Simply don't give out any points until the winner confirms they've received the game.

Giving out points and then taking them away again will only lead to confusion and anger.
