My computer's dead... So when I start my computer, the fans start, after that, I usually hear one short IBM BIOS beep (which means everything's fine) but it doesn't happen, and the screen is just black.

I can't get in F Mode, my screen works fine, and it's not my graphics card (I tried with an old one that I don't use anymore, but in perfectly working condition).

So... I'm clueless. what could it be?

[EDIT] So it's not a virus, I edited my post. Okay... And it isn't my graphics card either.

[RE-EDIT] Problem still not fixed after all...
But at least I'm sure it's my Motherboard, now. $140. Ouch.

Thanks,

Sounds like a hardware issue to me.

Your ram might be dead. Can you boot into the bios and check? Also as a last resort install linux onto a flash drive and see if you can boot.

If not, it's hardware related.

I don't think it's RAM, but most Linux discs should have memtest, so you can check.

Well it's definitely not a virus...

Any hard disk activity? Hdd led flashing or flickering?

No. If you mean the small white light on the front of the computer... I forgot to mention that it stays lighted up. It usually just flash a bit...

That sounds like it's under some kind of stress. Either a motherboard or CPU failure by the sound of it.

POST screen? If not probably either BIOS/UEFI issue, or dead component...

Take out all but one stick of ram, then try a different stick.

Do you mean try the RAM sticks one by one?

Yep, but you're only going to need to try 2 since the chance of 2 dying at once is really remote.

But if I have 4X2 RAM, the computer should work even thought one of them's dead, no?

It won't boot if there's a dead stick in there. it's probably your mobo or psu anyway. Just put them in a blendtec total blender

try to start your pc without your ram and see if your computer beeps 2-3 times in a row

no, because if the computer saves on a dead ram ( because he does not know that it is dead ) and cannot get back the data then poor puter just crashes.

Reset the CMOS Jumper, or test your components, can't say more, sorry....

If your screen is black when you start your pc it might be the power cord of the proc. the 4 pin cable or the motherboard in some casese it might be the ram try to put out the ram and put it in again and see if it works if not you might have to buy a new proc or motherboard :)

OP, the problem you're describing sounds to me like it's MoBo related.
Specifically it sounds to me like either your North Bridge/NB Aux Power coupling fried (happened to me once after a BIOS update), or else far less likely but still POSSIBLE is that the 12v rail on your PSU that supplies the 8pin Aux MoBo cable died...

If you can, try switching out your PSU with a backup, which would rule out the PSU being the problem. But I'd be willing to bet it's the MoBo.

This usually indicates a hardware issue, specifically a mobo issue.
However, if you can enter BIOS try reseting it to default. If not, try reseting CMOS. There should be a button/jumper on the mobo, next to the battery. If not you could remove the battery and put it back and check if this works.

You could also remove all your RAM and insert one stick at a time to eliminate memory issues but I don't think this is a memory issue.

motherboard definitely. the non-present beep gave it away :P just my two cents, but test out all possibilities to make sure

I had this problem and I found that, for whatever reason, my monitor wouldn't work on startup if plugged in with an HDMI cable. I instead switched to a DVI cable and that worked completely fine. This may not be your problem at all, but I suggest you try using a different monitor or try switching up the cables like I did.

Thanks for the replies everyone, very helpful... I'll start by checking my RAM I guess. Sorry for my late replies, I'm using a shared computer. :D

No, it doesn't do ANYTHING. The fans start but no beeping, and just a black screen of death. I can't get in F Mode either.

PROBLEM FIXED!

It was a loose wire coming from the power supply to the Motherboard (whatever the name).
Thanks everyone!
