That's weird, it explicitly told me it required android to create an account when I looked into signing up through browser.
Could you link a location where android isn't required?

I missed seeing the downloadable, I was trying with the browser version only- thank you for pointing that out.
It downloads and goes into setup fine, but I'm not going to personally bother seeing how it goes past that, considering Telegram's issues. Even without those, it doesn't really seem to stand out among the many, many communication applications that are out there right now.

There were pages and pages of results, I just went with what seemed the most predominant issue, from the first article focusing on it. Feel free to select another source that appeals more to you. And, again, the emphasis wasn't on the severity or quantity of the issues, it was that Telegram distinguishes itself with negative elements, rather than with any positive differences compared to other services. Which runs us back to the question of "Why chose Telegram over another service [with more distinguished product features and less negative elements associated with it]?"

Telegram claimed that WhatsApp was less secure. Industry experts stated the opposite was true.
Gizmodo merely indicated that to be the case. They never stated better in any general sense.

Contrary to the opinions of almost every encryption and security expert, Telegram’s FAQ touts itself as more secure as WhatsApp. But in reality, WhatsApp uses the most highly praised encryption protocol on the market and encrypts every text message and call by default.
So the point is, if you’re looking to communicate securely, just use Signal, iMessage, or WhatsApp. Telegram has too many potential flaws and hiccups that may compromise its integrity as a secure messaging application.
