I just logged in to Steam and noticed something I've never seen before and was wondering if maybe somebody knows what exactly happened here. I don't think it's a problem, just being curious.

It seems unlikely to me that somebody would pay for a Trading card with credit card but maybe they used wallet funds added via CC that haven't been properly cleared yet?

🤔

Community Market Transaction - Payment pending

Update:

According to a TheGamer article that was pointed out to me by himeko2002 this is due to a new, as of now unannounced Steam policy to put a temporary hold on Community market transactions when there are drastic price fluctuations.

Since there hasn't been an official statement yet the reasoning behind this is up for speculation but the working theory is it's to combat scams as it makes it harder to transfer funds away from compromised accounts or cash out your Steam wallet.

By the way in my case the funds have already been released and credited to my wallet after roughly 24 - 36 hours after I noticed the trade hold.

Maybe they first must check the validity of your trading card. :p

Well then it must be legit. When somebody told me the same thing about my Karambit everything worked out perfectly.

Maybe Steam detected some suspicious activity on the account so they locked it until the owner verifies?

Yeah, that could be one possibility. I know it's just 1€ but I hope the transaction eventually clears.
I only sell foils in that price range once in a blue moon.

That's definitely new, at least as far as I'm aware, I wonder what exactly they're waiting for.

If I had to guess the buyer must have used external funds directly when doing the purchase (i.e their steam wallet didn't have enough to directly cover the transaction), so the "pending" status is there while valve gets the payment method verified and any grace period is over (e.g to protect against the buyer cancelling the order on their side shortly after)

Thanks 😉 Yeah, I was thinking something along thoses lines but I usually top up my wallet 2 or 3 times a year and then pay everything with Steam wallet so I am not really familiar with all that split payment / PayPal on Steam kind of stuff.

+1 meow. I got the following wording in the email confirmation of a steam market transaction:

The purchase price for this item is unusual. Funds received from this sale will be held temporarily.
Funds from this sale will be held by Steam for up to five days. In the meantime, the funds will be included in your pending wallet balance. If necessary, the transaction may be reversed and the item returned to your Steam Inventory.
Steam Support cannot modify or accelerate this process. We apologize for the inconvenience."

The purchase price for this item is unusual

hmm well that's a bit weird because a foil card for that price is not that uncommon, which suggests that the buyer account did indeed have some unusual activity like others have mentioned (e.g account was compromised or something)...

either way, it appears OP has to wait up to 5 days for it to clear or be cancelled, time will tell :)

Thanks for pointing that out 😉
I googled Community market transaction pending and hold but of course it didn't cross my mind to check my email 😅

The funds have already been released and credited to my wallet now so I suppose when they say up to 5 days they mean absolute maximum.

I just updated the OP with new information. So from the looks of it there doesn't seem to be a particular price cutoff but rather when there are significant price fluctuations.

The last item of the card I was selling sold for 0,90€ - so not much of a difference - but the one before that only fetched 0,11€ which would mean a very significant fluctuation.

By the way in my case the funds have already been released and credited to my wallet after roughly 24 - 36 hours after I noticed the trade hold so I suppose when they say "up to 5 days" they mean absolute maximum.

Edit: Guess they still have to finetune it - since in your case already 16 cards sold for a similar price recently.
