Both offer persistent progression

Definitely The Binding of Isaac : Rebirth and maybe Risk of Rain

In all these games you die a lot, and explore a lot, and get stronger, etc. Like what you described. :-)

It's really good. I haven't beaten it yet but I've come close! This one has slipped under the radar, it deserves more attention.
If you like that you may want to check out A Bastard's Tale also, another Soulsy brutal combat game thingy, very good.

Depends on how hardcore you are.
Dwarf Fortress (Adventure Mode) - basically qualifies AND you get a base management/simulation with it. Not to mention you can generate your own world. Don't be scared off by ASCII graphics as there are graphical packs and tons of tools for the game.
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead - a post-apocalyptic roguelike with quite insane simulation elements you have to keep track of, but it results in a lot of options open to you. Just like Dwarf Fortress there's a strong modding scene.
UnReal World - only one on Steam, although you can get the free version from the site, and the most accessible one of the three. What makes it stand apart is the historical iron age period and fact it employs survival aspect heavily as one of its core pillars so weather and hunger are equally as important as enemies.
PS.
Bloody formatting.

I can very much recommend Demented Pixie. I generally don't enjoy rogue-likes all that much, but I loved this game :)
Another rogue-like that I enjoyed was bit Dungeon II.

I'm currently waiting for dead cells to come out on the 10th of may. This one looks really good.
Everspace is still in early access but it is quite fun already.
I would also recommand Darkest Dungeon, a wierd mixed between rogue-like and jrpg where you have to manage you party's madness
Nuclear Throne, a fast pace top down twin stick shooter.
and Don't starve, you can also play multiplayer with the "together" version.
You can check crypt of the necrodancer. I personally didn't like it that much but everyone else seems to love it.
Strafe, an FPS with some rogue-like feature is coming out on the 9th of may.
20xx a rogue-like megaman game. I'd love to play that one but waiting for the price to go down.
Rimworld. A fantastic survival colony management. not exactly a rogue-like but you will die a lot.

In Celebration Of Violence
Top-down, slower pace than most others, tons of weapons (melee and ranged), spells, mementos (passive items), permament stat progression.
Only game I've ever felt compelled to write a guide for. If you manage to overcome the somewhat hard start it's awesome.

If you are into ARPGs as well, try Titan Quest. It's one of my favs. Also, you can try Victor Vran and The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing.

thanks a lot for all the replies buddies! sadly i read a lot of roguelikes with permadeath :/
i just played bit dungeon II and it seems you cannot save or loose progress. this is exactly what i dont like, cause i love ROGUE LEGACY that you die but DONT loose your level ups and purchased stuff!

Check out Modest Kind. It's similar to Enter the Gungeon and Binding of Isaac, but with Quiz Trivia mechanic and deep Kojima-like lore and narrative driven. It's dirt cheap too.

I can't see any problems with that if the thread is still relevant and he's actually contributing to it and not just bumping. I'm glad he did since I didn't see this thread before and discovered some new games.

Ok, sorry. I didn't mean any offense by this. And I hope I didn't sound rude either.

It's fine, I know that it can be an annoyance sometimes, it just depends on what the thread is about and what's the comment

My favourite:
Another great but that can be played without permadeath

when i think about rogue like games (i ddint play so many sadly) i often think about rogue legacy!
the genre is not so important for me i just love the level of progression, you die and die and die but you can choose different skills/buy new stuff and you progress!
which games can you recommend too where you feel the progression and have fun? (e.g. diablo1 was so lovely, you die and die and had to grind but you also felt the progression with each level,. oh ok it was an ARPG but i just wanted to let you know the feeling i love while playing such games!)
