Hi everyone !

Today, I decided to make a decision-making flowchart to help me decide when to buy new games and help control my backlog.
This chart doesn't take bundles into account but rather concerns newly released games or the quality ones you wouldn't expect to see bundled anytime soon.
I'm sure it could be improved but I'm happy with it as it is. I hope it will help you too!

Purchasing games isn't a logical process though. ;-p

My general rule of thumb is just: "Are you going to play it right away? If the answer is no, it can wait" :P

Do you have thousand of games on Steam that need finishing?
[YES] Play your thousand of games first.
[NO] Stop lying.

Good thing I have only 597 unplayed games in my library then. It means I can buy a few more before I start playing them :P
Honestly, since I crossed 1k games in library mark, I only buy games I want to play right away, and those I buy only at historically low price. The rest of my wishlist is only for tier 1 bundles and steamgifts (I only enter for my wishlisted games). Even with this rule, I got from 1000 to 1227 games in less than two years.

I rarely buy games at full price. Only twice so far. My problem is deciding between a good sale and waiting for bundle... Got burned by that many times I lost count. T_T

I pre-ordered Overwatch Origins Edition at full price.
Played less than six months. :/

Same here but only play it two weeks :(
I think my biggest failed purchase for pre-oder.

Basically the answer to all questions is -> wait for it to be in a bundle someday. :)

indirect-begging has became a trend on sg *wink wink*

Yeah, you do have a point.
To be honest, I have even said the 4th option a few times. Though, I never really had those intentions. I'm just a poor bastard who can't afford stuff.
I see your point though and even though I find it a bit cynical, I wouldn't be surprised if most people had those ulterior motives.

The chart is basically just a long way of asking "are you going to play it within 1 month?"

A good alternative but a bit dated IMO.
6 years ago, the number of Steam games was much lower and 66% off sales were the norm, Humble Monthly didn't exist and isthereanydeal.com probably didn't either.
Besides, that chart doesn't take into account when you're going to play the game. And we all know that games get discounted sooner and sooner these days.

I WISH I could convince myself to follow a logical approach when it comes to buying games, but more often than not my addiction and that wicked sales psychology gets the better of me.

A bit too much for my eyes -- the flowchart is kinda huge!
A flowchart from top to bottom would be easier on the eyes.

I like it! I especially like that you factor in how much you care about the dev team itself - like, do you want to support their work by buying their game full price.

A more reasonable flowchart would start with:

  • Do you want to play it right now?
  • Do you find the price reasonable?

And go on from there. Thinking about the price first is what gets people to buy without control.

My optimal algorithm (which I follow to an extent) goes something like this:

  • Do I want to play this game?
  • Is the current price good enough?
  • If it is, buy it.
  • If not, add it to my wishlist (or isthereanydeal list) and wait for a sale.

Of course bundles and $1 sales do cause me to deviate from this and go into the 'will I realistically ever play this game' type flow.

You forgot the 'will I ever play this game' part. That's where I stop at buying most bundles.
