Initial blanket response

but then again it's expected for several reasons.
1) This group is made up industry members from big AAA publishers for the most part
2) There is no incentive for them to do more than they have to
3) The deadline isn't quite upon us yet (and the petition could very well have not enough UNIQUE and VALID signers)
4) Quite frankly, it's not on them to act, but rather the EU parliament
But the fact that they responded meant that it's not being ENTIRELY ignored.

Signed a year ago, but only now has it got into mainstream discussions everywhere. I guess some drama can be good for something xD
1.3 mil now, but the more the better, keep going

Behold the Ubisoft unofficial response to the movement:

Keeps getting worse for preservation, let alone consumer rights. Destroy art you say? 😟

It's interesting to see that Ubisoft didn't have this in the EULA already, won't lie. The concept of having to destroy all copies of your game at the request (or in the case of stopping support of the game) has been a pretty common element in EULAs. Good news is that EULAs are about as important to most people as used toilet paper. Most EULAs are already in clash with people's legal rights, but also they're generally considered nearly unenforceable when push comes to shove with a lawsuit or whatever other legal maneuver.
Still, wild to see them do this now of all times. Again, not that it's different from the average EULA from a major company, but still. Thanks for sharing the article :)

I love this initiative from the bottom of my heart.
This is what stops me from buying games on steam or other platforms. The fact that if i buy them, I won't have them forever or be able to play them forever. This is why I keep consoles and CDs, or hard drives with games.
Although I signed the petition already, I wish it didn't require my personal credentials; especially knowing how easily a database can be hacked. We recently had elections in my country and one of the parties had stolen personal data and used those to steal votes. There was a specific country that also influenced negatively the whole election and I fear this sort of data might fall onto their hands AGAIN (as much as it may sound like I have a tin foil on my head, in Eastern Europe things are sh*t)

Yikes.

Yeah, sucks to have to worry about false allegations, but we're trying our best to be prepared for these types of tactics since the cause is more important than our comfort here. We're doing our best and we just hope every eligible person makes sure to sign the initiative :)

"Private servers are not always a viable alternative option for players as the proctions we put in place to secure player's data, remove illegal content and COMBAT UNSAFE COMMUNITY CONTENT would not exist" I just found the lobby group mentioned this.
Guys, I already support the Stop Killing Games.initiative. You don't need to sell it anymore.

Sorry it's been a month since your comment, just saw it, still I'm curious, but is this a lie? I've played on private servers where I've gotten banned simply because the GM's were unhappy I didn't play the game with them or at their expectations, without breaking any rules. Never happened to me on a server owned by the main devs. Mind you those were people who had my e-mail used to register, ip, mac, hwid, and other data, along that they might have requested certain mods or .dll's to be downloaded and placed in the server file which could run things like keyloggers, malware, sniffers, etc. that I wouldn't know of. I've seen mods flip trying to act cool one day after having a normal server for months and spawn in 3d models of dicks for fun on certain servers, what if there's someone not of age there? Is that like right? Sure it's funny, but would you have thought it's appropriate and neat if all of a sudden ubisoft replaced all their licensed cars with different models of dicks on wheels? Like I think people would've disliked that, but we don't think it's a big deal if some private server owner does it, somehow.
I mean CS had sprays you could upload your own image of, probably Team Fortress as well I'm guessing. If you've never seen boobs on CS servers you never really played Counter-Strike imo. You'd imagine there's a reason why that's not an option in CS2 despite how wish listed it is by people.

My rules are easy. You don't like a private server, you go to other one. Easy.
But sure some private servers are trouble. But i can quickly hop to other one, so it's fine for me.
The whole "COMBAT UNSAFE COMMUNITY CONTENT" sounds like a "rules so that you don't get offended" that I don't mind

I think it's more about who can access that content, understandably it wouldn't affect you since it doesn't bother you. You have to imagine with the publishers/devs they have to adhere to certain laws when posting this content, and if someone was to message them for a takedown/adjustment they can reach them. If someone is running a private server doing these things, likely minors wouldn't leave as this is new territory for them that they are not allowed in anywhere else, and if someone does want to stop it, they got no one to reach, because it isn't a publisher, etc. The amount of effort it takes to take it down is insane with a private server, including likely reaching the publisher first to ask them to take it down, after which it goes to a dmca that gets ignored, after many attempts the server is somewhere in Cyprus let's say with some bogus business name and address and poof it's gone and untouchable, launches again in 2 days in a different country and we're back at months of trying to take it down or just move on.
So I get their pov on not wanting their brand to be associated with these things or get in trouble for it.
Like Sims 4 has a weird pregnant fetish community, but the only way I found about this is because I was looking for more mods which add more items like furniture, colors, etc. which don't exist as far as I searched(some mods to replace current furniture might exist, but not to add extras). But there's a whole pregnancy fetish out there for the sims 4 enjoyers I guess.
FFXIV has a whole community dedicated to porn content(including 3d models you swap out in the game files), and they have guild/houses where they decorate and RP as prostitutes, etc. The game is rated teen. It's very possible it's been cracked down upon in recent years because it was just weird. Changing 3D models in the files is bannable now as far as I've heard.
They also got the peaceful https://ffxiv.eorzeacollection.com/glamours where people normally show their outfits without being cringe and weird.
I've also played private servers where I eventually lost everything because it was no longer profitable for the owner to keep it up, despite having been able to buy a rocket ship pc server through "donations" it got by selling gear/items/gm/privileges in the game. The same would apply in this case too, if these companies would have to provide servers, eventually these users would lose their data, as someone decides to just quit the server. Non refundable donations tho.

I'm actually familiar hiw people left second life and went to FFXIV for porn.
I'm actually fine with it. Let them play. Sure, companies have to follow laws and regulations. Private servers do not. If people voluntarily go to private servers, maybe even pay donations, accept the risks involved with that, who i am to argue?
For me, the existance of private servers, with their own rules and whatever is not a reason to oppose the stop killing games initiative. I would argue it's a reason to support it even more

I mostly agree with you, but you know who doesn't care, it's the parent with 0 game experience who's gonna catch their son playing that and attribute it all to the creator not to trashuser666 who hosted the server and modified the content, and so the parent will spread word that ubisoft is the work of the devil like they didn't try to prevent this, which becomes push for more restrictions in official live games, and slowly leads to more and more censorship in big games like the way you can't even tell someone to eat shit in Marvel Rivals without getting banned for instance.

Interesting, to each their own in that regard, I respect you got your stance on it. I see everything on a balance, if there's more negatives than positives, it's a worse thing and a different approach must be taken.

"like the way you can't even tell someone to eat shit in Marvel Rivals without getting banned" I actually miss 12 years old telling me they would fuck my mother. It gave games a special flavoir.
"if there's more negatives than positives" negatives for one may actually be a positive flr another. Since we are talking about FFXIV, I like square Enix approach. Mods are officially not allowed to avoid trouble. And they enforce a strong "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

EDIT: I went on vacation for like 2 weeks and was completely offline after we started the final push to get more signatures - quite literally about the same hour that everything started kicking off, so I'm just catching up and haven't had the chance to update the thread.
WE'VE REACHED OVER A MILLION SIGNATURES AND WE'RE CLOSE TO THE OVERDRIVE GOAL OF 1.4 MILLION, THANK YOU EVERY ONE OF YOU FOR SIGNING :)
Hey there!
Caesar239 already made a thread, but he offered to basically let me make my own thread so I can answer any questions you might have more conveniently.
I'm one of the official organizers for the EU Petition for Stop Killing Games.
A link to Ross Scott, the head of the movement, explaining in a video some of the most basic questions and reasons why this petition isn't just slacktivism or why this isn't just a lost cause. Also, here's our official FAQ that answers most of the questions people have, but to make it easier:
For the most common questions I saw from the original thread:
No, we're not asking for games to endlessly keep their servers up. In fact, we demand nothing of how long a publisher has to support their game.
Yes, EU can do this solely because every right you can think of as a digital consumer has either been ratified by the EU once another government has introduced it or they've fully originated it.
Games that actually sell themselves as a service (like World of Warcraft), aren't in our crosshairs at all. We're talking of products that are sold without a known end date. Just like people don't demand a 1 month gym membership to be endless, we're not demanding a 1 month WoW sub to last forever.
Feel free to ask any questions that you might feel have been bugging you.
Proud to be an SG member that's trying their best to improve digital experiences for everyone. Hope you will be as well by signing here :)
