How much do Visual Novels matter to you?

View Results
[Buy, Steam] I am happily paying $10 for these lovely titles.
[Buy, Charity] I am more of charitable person rather than a visual novel fan, but these games / keys are a nice bonus to my donation.
[Have] I already own what I need from this bundle, either on Steam or on Itch.io.
[Skip] I have no interest in such charities or in the genre.
[Expensive] Would gladly buy this bundle, but $10 is a real stretch for me at the moment.

Being trans isn't a choice, however undergoing surgery, hormone therapy and/or trying to live as their correct gender, so to speak, is a choice. I think you are confusing actual trans people with transtrenders, who are people that aren't trans but pretend they are for various reasons (mostly attention, and SJW brownie points).

If my feelings being hurt were my reason to blacklist, my blacklist would be empty. And spare me anymore passive-aggressive bullshit. Yes, I know (from you mentioning it at every opportunity) that you can't stand being blacklisted, but I simply don't care.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I dont like receiving blacklists and I know how certain users here cant handle questions or diffrent opinions. But I just had a few gin & tonics so I ask anyways because im curious.

How is being trans not a choice? I have heard that most children "grow out" of gender dysphoria by puberty. I did a quick google and even wikipedia says:

According to prospective studies, the majority of children diagnosed with gender dysphoria cease to desire to be the other sex by puberty, with most growing up to identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, with or without therapeutic intervention. If the dysphoria persists during puberty, it is very likely permanent.

The other link said :

research shows that up to 94 percent of children will "grow out" of their transgender identity. (anywhere from 65 to 94 percent)

Didnt google this, but didnt even Caitlynn Jenner sort of recently have second thought about her transition. I have also heard that the suicide rate doesnt decrease after the transition.

Seems kind of strange to me to claim its not a choice (and I dont know if you claim its not a mental disorder either) if people "grow out" of it. It also doesnt get better or many changes their mind after its to late. One could think that if they where really born in the wrong body, it would increase the chances of being a "little better" after correcting the "mistake".

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't really like calling that mental disorder and/or illness, because that has massive stigma attached to it, but yes technically it would be correct, and same thing would apply to homosexuality, but it's not politically correct to say that now (and it used to be a mental disorder, but that classification was removed under pressure).
Even if you yourself don't consider mental disorder being inherently something bad or wrong (is being trans or gay wrong? I don't think so), most of people would take it as something offensive, and personally I don't think of it as such, and don't call it that way.

As for it being a choice... it's muddy waters, kids and teenagers can rarely make such informed decisions, and indeed, it would be a phase to most (not all), because of confusion about their feelings, sexuality... and social pressure might infact force them into trying to be trans, even if that eventually turns out not to be the case, and that they are simply gay or lesbian or whatever.
For actual trans people, imo it's not really a choice, and even then something like that is life changing, so it's not something easy to talk or make changes about. You have to make distinction between people that really are trans, kids/teens that might think they are trans, and transtrenders that give trans people bad name - those are usually the vile sexist and bigoted danger-hair people you see on social media.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thanks for explaining. Thought it was weird to outright dismiss the choice and it sounded from you that if it was a choice they are not real trans. But leaving the choice and mental disorder out of the question isnt logical concidering if you look at the different cases.

The medical term is still gender dysphoria if Im not mistaken. If majorty of children "grow out" of it even without therapy Vs. those that still concider themselves trans, when does it stop being a mental condition and just something you where born as?

It is muddy waters and I guess its a mix of mental disorder/choice/how your born, and not just one thing. How people perceive themselves can change over time and its kind of dangerous in the direction its heading. We have these parents forcing children to live as a for example as a girl because he likes barbies. Or when they transition children, that is a questions for adults when they are mature and ready. We have no idea what these decisions will have on them later in life.

Anyways, thanks again for your input. And thanks for those that blacklisted me.

IMO, sadly in politics only "transtrenders that give trans people bad name" and "conservatives" that simply hate different people are given a chance to speak. Obviously their conversation is fruitless, so actual policy making either favours one extreme or the other.

I used Wikipedia because they are mostly biased and it was the first link. I also looked at the second link too that said the same. So, the studies are hilarious I guess?

Why do you think I mentioned quick google and "even" wikipedia said it. Im not going to publish a paper about the subject.

Please provide a more credible source for general information then? There isn't one? Or you can't read the references down the Wiki page to see where the information actually comes from? Or dunno maybe get the idea of a Wiki and edit it yourself if inaccurate?

Same kind of BS than when something happens and the first English news I hit on Google is DailyMail or whatever and people dismiss the news as fake purely based on that, instead of seeing for themselves that the same news is on every media out there.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There is no such thing as a credible source for "general information". There are, however, multiple credible sources for specific information. Wikipedia is something just anybody can fill in with whatever crap they believe, think they know or have misread some place.

Or dunno maybe get the idea of a Wiki and edit it yourself if inaccurate?

A wiki is by nature inaccurate. The fact someone cites a source in note doesn't make what they write in a wiki reliable. The source can be whatever you want, and even the source itself is credible, since it is not directly quoted but paraphrased, it can be geared toward anything anyone wants to believe.

I am not talking about Daily Mail or the Sun or whatever.

Or it can be accurate information, even more accurate than an encyclopedia on average even with all those faults. Dismissing something purely because it's in Wikipedia is the silly thing here. Right solution would be to go check the references and see how reliable they are. Just like you do with every scientific article, which can be BS too just as well.

So you refuse to edit the false information you find to make it more accurate because your belief is that a Wiki must be inaccurate so you can continues dismissing it as inaccurate? Or what's the point?

Permalink

Or it can be accurate information

Even a broken clock can be right once a day. That doesn't make it more reliable.

Dismissing something purely because it's in Wikipedia is the silly thing here

If you say so.

Just like you do with every scientific article, which can be BS too just as well.

Again, depends on the source, and the validity of the science but generally speaking, are you actually saying that the odds of Wikipedia being accurate are roughly the same as those of any "scientific article"?
On the one hand, you have a web page that anyone can edit. On the other, you have a paper published and written after a study, by one or several professionals, under controlled protocols and that can and will be analyzed and/or refuted by other professionals. Same same?

So you refuse to edit the false information you find to make it more accurate because your belief is that a Wiki must be inaccurate so you can continues dismissing it as inaccurate?

Man, are you related to the Wikipedia founder? Just asking. :P
I didn't say I refuse to edit false information. I'm just saying it's a waste of time in any situation because what I can edit, someone else can come after me and edit again.

Or what's the point?

I'm starting to wonder tbh...

I'm sorry but who was talking about the Encyclopedia Britannica? I wasn't.

Also, are you going to keep harassing me without answering any of my arguments or...?

Because this whole explosion of posts started with a guy saying that being trans was a choice because... wikipedia said that most kids with gender dysphoria before puberty were "growing out of it", which doesn't mean at all that not growing out of it is a choice. So I was pointing out that it's not surprising that people who consider wikipedia credible have such faulty logic and they you ride me on St Wikipedia's holy credibility for an hour because?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I was if you fail to see who writes what here.

Why do you keep being so bitter about Wikipedia? If your arguments contained something more than bitter hatred towards it without any real argument I could answer them better. I have already proven by a peer reviewed study that Wikipedia is quite accurate. Where is your proof that's based on anything other than your opinions?

Because people like you annoy me, claiming something is not credible without ever bothering to check if it might actually be. All information must be wrong unless said by you or what? Should we trust you more now than the collected knowledge of humanity distilled into one site?

Still nagging about wikipedia I see. I didnt say it was a choice because of what wikipedia said. I asked a question based on something I heard and used first and second source from google because they corroborated what I heard. It also wasnt a explosion of posts. I received three replies. Two that was a respons to my question, and your "funny" comment about wikipedia.

To summarize, I only asked a question in my first post. But to get a better answer I wrote some stuff I heard and an opinion that dismissing the choice all together seemed strange to me. After the user I asked the question replied I gave a more detailed opinion.

If you had something to say about the subject that could give a better understanding I would appriciate the answer, instead of just: "Wikipedia, lol".

Trans people are obviously going to be called by the incorrect pronoun by accident. You're not responsible for that, no. But you are responsible for how you treat them from that point on. You feeling like trans people are "shov[ing] it on" you already betrays your attitude towards this group of people, but really, it's not that hard to treat people--regardless of whether or not they have a mental illness--with enough courtesy to not make them feel like trash.

I thought that trans people are people with both sexe physical attribute, then I would have understood the bundle as they are persecuted in some countries.
I really don’t like when people surf on trends like that. Itch.io suddenly having all those philantropic bundles. BLM everywhere, brands adapting not because of the message they shout but because of reputation and money. It’s really depressing and that’s why I don’t position myself because both sides have some points as shown by the media who easily chance side. I don’t plan on doing History just surviving, not everyone is an activist with an opinion to share. Anyway I won’t buy that bundle, I don’t have that money for now anyway.

Just my two cents but trans people are also persecuted in those same countries, and vilified/harassed in most.
I don't know if Itch.io is trying to gain reputation or money but most brands do what they do for money so if a little good can come out of it and people who are marginalized can benefit from it, well, at least it's money well spent.

I am surprised to have got so many blacklists resulting from my comment, I sure did offend quite some people.
I don't think I said that this bundle is a bad idea or that there is no issue about how people treat trans people in some places. I also didn't say those countries are far far away ones either. Capitalism and ostracism of minority is very actual but quite old.
In my previous message I am questionning itch.io's motivation as I see a trend in their recent bundles, and I am also asking a clarification of what is a trans as I though it only included people who are born with both sexes attributes, I think it should be done before everybody gives their 2cent, after all it's the issue the bundle is addressing (also I would be interested to see how many people actually took the time to learn about that association's doing before getting on their high horses).
I won't be a week-end activist fighting from my sofa for what is the actual trend on twitter. It's my personnal opinion (please respect that even if you don't respect the content of it) but not why I don't buy this bundle, I am just very short on money.
This discussion is probably a dead end as most of the discussions where people talk with their emotions and assume what other don't say. If people would stop attacking others values and just help their fellow humans the world would be a better place also more people would be drawn to that behavior than during a discussion (where basically everybody thinks the other one is quite dumb to not see the right way of being). How often this sort of discussion resulted in a "you're totally right I'm a prick I will change my way of thinking"? it's very rare.
Anyway all this controversial talk is very faraway from what the initial topic was. Well I think I clarified my previous message and don't think continuing to answer would be usefull. I just hope we all live the less regretful lives possible according to our personnal values.

Permalink

Well it's a shame because it's better to discuss than blacklist people, imo and I didn't think you were being offensive to anyone but hey, people do what they want. Just like your reasons not to buy a bundle are your own.

I don't really mind these groups as persons, but i'm against the "pride" thing and the teaching of homosexuality to small children. About trans i'm against the very scene of surgery to "change" the sex of a person, since i think it is inhumane and disgusting treatment of a person. Instead (as someone mentioned) they should have treatment for the mental illness that they suffer from.

I can't say i live my life according to the bible, but i try to follow what seems most relevant. Slavery was allowed before and it does not say anything particular in the bible about banishing it, but i think it is good that most countries do it anyway. Incest is of course bad. Bible never said it was good either, just documented cases where it happened (not actually sure what the old testament say about it, but it was probably forbidden for the jewish people). Forced marriages is against the free will of man according to the new testament, but in the old there were some cases of it. I'm also personally against all these 3 things.

Love anime, am not transphobic, for what it's worth. Anime and manga can be super transphobic as a whole, but there are some lovely exceptions like Wandering Son.

Dude, I've simply noticed a strange coincidence in this thread and was pretty much kidding, in no way am I actually assuming that there's a connection.

Aren't jokes like that how prejudices start to begin with?
Every person out there is unique and should be treated as such, trying to draw connections to whole groups is a dangerous game that leads to unjust biases.

Just look at some examples from the past:
Jews and banking, they all must be greedy and callous from birth.
Racial minorities and crime, they must all be looters and arsonists from (insert region here).
Homosexuals and a few predators, they must all be sexual deviants out to rape you.
Trans people and Tumblr, they must all be special snowflakes just acting triggered to get attention.
Videos games and a few shooters, they must all be violent sociopaths and killers.
etc. etc. etc.

Those are all obviously idiotic connections and conclusions, but people definitely held and them (and many still do sadly).
You aren't the first person I have heard make a joke about anime avatars and hate speech either, which is the real reason I am even commenting to begin with. Lets be real though, anime is pretty popular in general on the internet, so of course you will see a lot of anime avatars.

Not trying to chide you personally either of course, a joke is just a joke. Just trying to put this out there for those influenceable people who will see your comment and run with it as a fact. I have unfortunately been seeing a lot more people trying to blame anime, of all things, for all the world's problems, because it is one of the current popular "things I don't understand."

I know you're kidding... but it got me thinking about connections.

You know where there's a connection?

Between being transphobic and never having met an actual trans person.

It's REALLY easy to be transphobic when "trans" is just a word on the internet, or on the TV news, or whatever.

It becomes much more difficult when someone in your life is trans, and you actually talk to them (and their family) about what it means and what they're going through.

My heart goes out to all the trans users on this site. Y'all deserve so much better than what I'm seeing in many of these comments.

Yeah, there's been like a handful of posters on here who can't help but bombard any charity-related thread with needless, hurtful comments and trolly bad faith arguments. Not fun to watch.

They yell about not wanting to have things shoved in their faces yet they take every opportunity they have to shove their unwanted opinion into everyone else's because they can. Totally makes sense, doesn't it? I wish people like them would realize that it's fine to have an opinion but that it does not have to be shared publicly all the time. Usually, I just feel sad for them because they must live a really sad life to have nothing better to do than to take their frustration about themselves out on everyone around them for no reason whatsoever.

"I wish people like them would realize that it's fine to have an opinion but that it does not have to be shared publicly all the time."

The type of people who always have to post their opinion about trans people (or any minority community really), aren't speaking to share their opinion, they are speaking to create a hostile environment. If they can stir up enough of a storm every time, it will create an atmosphere of dread that will prevent anyone from wanting to post anything positive (or even neutral) towards trans people, which is their real goal. Fortunately, times have changed and they just look like petty whiners now, few really care what they have to say anymore.

I wish that would give the opportunity to all the haters to see how "easy" Trans people have it, and how much harassment they face even in places that are meant to be friendly, but I doubt they would get the irony while they take time out of their empty lives and go out of their way to reply in thread that obviously don't concern them.

If you dont want to spend any money in order to find out if you like VNs you can start with Doki Doki Literature Club! and Everlasting Summer

If you like them and want to spend money I recommend STEINS;GATE and STEINS;GATE 0.

I have a general list of suggestions for those who don't usually play VNs (mostly because they're without romance and not in anime style (except for steins;gate)):
Eliza
Aviary Attorney
Leviathan: The Last Day of the Decade
STEINS;GATE
Open Sorcery
Night Call

It is weird and flattering to see myself cited in someone else's recommendations.

Also! I will add that anyone who enjoys Aviary Attorney will almost certainly enjoy its original inspiration, Ace Attorney, which is now available on Steam.

.. and I linked a wrong comment! Close, but wrong ><. Fixed

I'll add your comment about Ace Attorney next time :)

I remember when I played Aviary, I knew about Ace, I knew it's great, but even after I finished (& very-very much enjoyed) Aviary, I didn't want to try Ace. Because it's with people (boring), moreover, with anime-style people (prejudice, I know). Thank goodness I changed my mind one year after and finally tried Ace! Ofc, after first game I played the whole trilogy in one breath and changed my mind about VN as a genre. But.. Aviary was the first :D

That's fair! And Aviary Attorney is also much shorter and easier (minus the fact you can mess up that one trial by not gathering the right evidence in time), which is a point in its favour for beginners.

In any case, I'm so pleased I could help you discover how awesome VNs are!

Another great thread, Lilly. And of course, because it seems intolerant people on SG just can't keep their intolerance to themselves even in a thread that obviously doesn't concern them, another great occasion to test and fix my ESGST ignore filters.
I'm not into VN but I know a few people who'll love those games so it's a yes for me.

Would love to see a bundle to help clean up the oceans or help protect wild life from poachers. Something that won`t turn into something political where some people on the right pretend they hate and people on the left pretend they love. (Watch me get blacklisted for infuriating a poor soul. To whomever I have triggered, I welcome your blacklist and hope it somehow reliefs some of the darkness roaming your life.)
