Is Elden Ring that great or overhyped?

View Results
Yeah, It's super!
No, too overhyped, it's okay but not great
I don't know

It's a good game, picked it up last week. Just don't get too frustrated at the AI at times.

Loving some of the humor and references.

Here's one thing I meant by the humor.

The guy is a jar, or a pot.

Kind of describes what they might have been using when they made the character.
Plus you have to hit him in the rear to get him out of a hole when you first meet him. :P

I think it lost something like 97% of its playerbase since launch - it was just really buggy and barely functional. At this point I think it's just Amazon being a bad developer/publisher, because Lost Ark is hemorraging players as well even if for different reasons

Though the devs promised lots of updates for New World so who knows, maybe they'll turn it around

Yup.From close to 1m to less than 30k & still dropping.

Seems to me that unless Amazon pulls its own FFXIV 2.0 (the possibility of which, given their track record,is a massive "Press X to "Doubt""),the game probably won't be around to see 2023.

I played a few hours, I like it, but I decided to not play anymore until they fix a bug in which some open world enemies becomes invisible.
It happens to a lot of people, so they may fix it eventually: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1245620/discussions/0/3183486320472067658/

Happened to me as well, also the horse dissapears.
I hope they will fix it, I never died from that but that's surely annoying, especially for a game of that stature.

Well I wasn't too sure when I bought the game, especially with the open world thing that, in my opinion, feel a bit cheap.

But I got it anyway, and I can say it's a really good game.
The advantage of this game compared to other souls is that you can go back and forth to different places pretty easely, you can never be stuck at one point, so that's engaging for the persons that never played a souls game as it's less frustrating.

As someone that did the entire series, I felt a bit lost at the beggining on where to go/what to do but in 5 hours or so I got my marks and it went smoothly.

I did maybe 30 hours of gameplay but I didn't see evreything yet for sure, and the map is gigantic and filled with places to explore, so, you can't really run dry on options.

If you want it, you can go blind on this one. It's not as DS3 where it just felt like they put content from their previous games and mashed it into one.
This game is really it's own experience compared to other souls, and it's a good experience to have.

Honnestly, I wouldn't say it's the game of the year by any means (cause I'm not educated enough on last hits, I'm more of a sales shark than anything), but it's definitely a good pick !

I can only give my 2 cents based on what I've seen online/heard from friends since I can't afford to buy it, but if you're a fan of Souls games it's probably going to be a smash hit for you. It's pretty much that except bigger on pretty much all aspects. It also looks like it has one of the best open worlds out there, with little hand holding and lots of genuine exploration to do. Personally I would most likely buy it if I could

I think the only big issue with it is that the performance is a bit crappy on some systems. I have friends with a super PC that have experienced lots of stuttering, while another with an older PC (with like a GTX 1070) had no issues whatsoever. If you have some way of trying the game before buying it I would suggest to do that so you know it'll run fine on your system. Or you can always just buy it and refund it on Steam if it ends up running poorly I guess

I've never played any DS game, but I like ER pretty much. More than 110 hours in game so far. The only one bad thing is: I have no clue where to go next, which quest need to do next and so on. You need to explore a lot. But everything is fine thanks to wiki. lol

Honestly, my overall opinion on the game is actually pretty low.

  • Being an open world means it's actually incredibly easy to miss important items, locations, and NPCs.
  • Combat (as well as the rewards you get from combat) isn't balanced well, as the difficulty tends to swing wildly, even within the same area.
  • Boss fights have taken the approach of quantity instead of quality. Related to the combat balancing, most bosses are massive damage sponges. At the same time, their attacks flail around for 15 seconds, only to give you a 0.5s window of opportunity to land any chip damage safely. And with how much damage they do, the margin of error often feels frustratingly small.
  • I'm finding exploration to be unrewarding. I'd almost go so far as to say I've been punished for it on numerous occasions. Either by encountering a sudden difficulty spike or by being forcibly warped to a far away location. And because it's a souls-like, death means losing resources (unless you're willing to tolerate going all the way back).
  • Landscapes don't feel distinctive enough. Rarely do I see a cool landmark in the distance and actively try to work my way towards it. Even though each of the bigger chunks of the map are visually identifiable from each other (so far), the landscape changes very little within each area.
  • The map only partially fills in as you go. The only way to see everything is to find a specific item in each area.

When a game's mechanics are actively working against each other instead of complimenting one another, that's poor design.

Play Dark Souls 1 and when the Titanite Demon kills you after striking through a wall while your camera is stuck to the wall so you can't avoid it, then you're input will be heard /s

One can point out the problems with the game and still love it, but some people really can't accept the fact that FromSoftware games have some clunky-ass mechanics or design elements to them. Yes, you can get past it as you have to roll with the punches -- but as it is possible to place your shower in the kitchen, it's weird and you'll get call out because of it, even though it's working.

Weird how the Bethesda's "it's not a bug, it's a feature" approach makes people joke about the game's problems, while any similar "who the fuck designed/balanced this part" criticism of a FromSoftware game will make the Git Gud gatekeepers crawl out of the woodworks.

I'm no elitist gatekeeper. Hell I SUCK at literally EVERYTHING I do. I'm probably the only person that's never been able to beat Dark Souls 1 on even the normal difficulty.

That being said, THOSE can be unforgiving. And even I, the one gamer out there that sucks at everything, can still play Elden Ring and not whine about the things you are.

If you don't like the game, then go back to something that seems to fit your style, like Candy Crush.

Wouldn't call it overhyped or overrated. It is pretty obvious that it is just not for everyone. Previous fromsoftware games were very successful bc the community shared one big thing, the joy of overcoming hardship in a video game, and every single player can relate to each other on this matter. Other than the difficulty, these games always had beautiful soundtracks and a well made dark fantasy world.

Definitely not a masterpiece, but a respect worthy game.

Haven't even finished DS1 yet (played some and loved it, but had to stop it for reasons), so Elden Ring isn't that high on my priority list. But from what I heard and seen from people playing it, respect-worthy game is surely accurate. The masterpiece part feels to be subjective, but I feel like it's not a mediocre game overhyped as the best one, rather an at least good game being (over?)hyped.

Elden Ring is my forst souls game, and I could say that I skipped every window pop-in and I had a hard time figuring out the first hour of the game. I asked some help from my friends with what each button does amd what Items I should buy at the start of the game.

For the first 5-10 hours all I did was just move on the map, discover all of it (without going into the story bosses), then once I discovered the vast majority of the map I decided to explore the areas I discovered in more details. I already knew the farthest zones are the hardest so I left them at the end.

I want to say that once you discover the game as you play it, you'll understand what you need to do. I completed the game without using any incantations/sorceries and to be honest, I have never had so much fun in years. I would say aside from the artstyle, the rage was what made it special for me, cuz I knew the fight would be only max 5 minutes, but dying was the majority of time I spent on xd

Side quests are another thing that you will never know what you need to do next, or when, so you must keep track of everything you do for them.

I still regret spending 60€ on Black Ops Cold War after 1 year, but not for spending 50€ on Elden Ring. I completed my first run of Elden Ring in about 85 hours and it was a blast.

is pretty great, but i don't like the enemies who like Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation put it, 'spaz the fuck out' as an attack, Also don't like that they made it really hard to be a strength based character, you hit far to low for how slow you are, its not impossible, but you gonna have to grind at the start imo the game only begins at lvl30 on strength.

People say that its a good game to start if you wanna get into the 'Souls' series, i think is ok for that but the previous games are going to be quite easier if you wanna play them.

I discovered best way to be strength is to spam the jump attack. I wield a collosal sword two handed and just staggered enemies easily with it, it felt like cheesing haha

Eventually I got enough weight to powerstance two of them. That just made the killing faster. Bonk!

I've never been much into the 'hardcore for the sake of hardcore' although I do appreciate the genre having an audience that'll love it. The common theme among my friends when asking how they're enjoying the game tends to be "The first X hours are brutal but once you get past that insert praise here;" the lowest input being 2 and the highest so far being 6.

I'm not too sure I'd make it past the 'hurdle' of frustration to really enjoy it though. Another pal mentioned that he gets through about an hour at a time before he's too exhausted from the gameplay to go further. Now, I've no qualms being called a filthy casual but I'm sweating bullets just listening to the experience they're going through and it doesn't sound all that great to me. A shame as I adore the setting and design being presented here but probably don't have the stomach for the mechanics.

I've never outright bought a brand new on-release game unless it either
1.) Has sentimental value
2.) "How did this get on steam I never thought I would get to play this"
3.) I planned to buy it.

But the open world/lore/exploration/hidden areas aspect and that it's easier to introduce new players to get into the series is a big draw-in for me. I'm still thinking about buying it, but I'm definitely still tentative.

It was definitely overhyped, just telling someone it's obviously DkS3 in an open world would get you downvoted to hell, you could see in the trailers dungeons are recycled, some models, textures too...

Does it affect the game negatively in any way? NOPE, it's amazingly fun once you get into it.

The success of the game is certainly making some devs seethe (the first screenshot has Horizon and Ubisoft devs, the other one is a Hearthstone dev but far more of them are throwing hissy fits on Twitter).

Sucks that the game doesn't have a shitload of microtransactions and an insanely convoluted user interface with unnecessary quest markers, RNG loot drops, an in-game store, live service time-gated content, and so on.

These people will never understand that as long as you make a game with great gameplay and an engaging atmosphere, everything else takes a back seat

To be fair, it's incredibly hard to reach the level of the quest-writers at Ubisoft.

Loved Dunkey's video about the game, calling out the questionable design and balance choices while still openly praising and loving it. I was annoyed by the Elden Ring hype before the release, but so many people love it for so many things, that now I'm happy it exists, and in the future eventually, very likely, I'll get to it. Soulslikes are like Jawbreakers for me, I love so many things in them and about them, but they are quite a big bite to chew in time and effort invested, and I'm easily distracted by other shiny games :D

Definitely the easiest or hardest Fromsoft game you will ever play depending on what 'rules' you set out for yourself. There is no easy difficulty slider found anywhere in the menu.... but it exist in different forms: summons you can call for every boss fight, overpowered weapons, magic, and the beauty of open world meaning if you find an area or boss too hard... you can go somewhere else and return when you are stronger/overleveled, something you can't do in other Fromsoft games as they are linear, meaning you're stuck until you get past the boss.

So if you want to see why people like Fromsoftware games, this is definitely the best game to check. And maybe even convince someone to look at their other titles.

I finished the game in 170 hours on my first run just exploring the beautiful world most of the time. I could've ended it in 100 if I wanted to, I just didn't want to yet, lol
