I didn't find a thread for this, but if there is one please let me know and I'll close mine ASAP.

Metro Awakening was revealed to be releasing this year during State of Play presentation. It's VR exclusive spin-off and NOT the next mainline game for the series, in fact it it has a different developer from the main franchise.

How are you feeling about this?

I already have VR so this is neat.
Well... Looks like it's time to buy VR...
BOOOOOOOO, down with VR!
Obligatory potato option / don't care about the game

Guess it's something for VR people to enjoy.
Setting-wise I suppose it does make a lot of sense, what with the series being a FPS.

As a non-VR person myself that's the limit of my opinions.

Does your VR headset come with a gas mask? Remember to change those filters regularly!

Now this would be an interesting opportunity for some merch, a VR headset that is also a gas mask.

Perhaps they could partner with Dyson and fashion it after that headphone with an air purifier that they released!

I remember when it was first announced people were like "WOW that sucks", but last I heard the reviews on it were actually fairly positive.

That's exactly what I thought about. My ancient VIVE doesn't have slot for the filter, so I'll probably pass

That could be an interesting use-case for the downward facing cameras of the Apple VR headset, allowing you to change those things with gestures in a somewhat realistic way... if the thing actually would support games like this, that is...

I honestly don't get those games that are VR-exclusive. There are quite a number of games that offer VR without excluding the vast majority of gamers so it is technically feasible.
Why would you choose to not make as much money as you can from your work? It seems like a contradiction.

If we're talking about a proper VR title, then no, you can't just convert it from one to the other.

The control method VR games use with two controllers, plus the headset, all tracked with six degrees of freedom in 3D space can't be replicated on a flat screen. It's everything from how interacting with objects work, to weapon handling, aiming, inventory management... then there's how spaces are designed and movement. No need to make "chest high cover" in a VR games, since you can just duck behind whatever you want, or blind fire around a doorway. A proper VR games takes all things like that into consideration and none of it works on a flat screen.

They are very different mediums.

I didn't think you could just "put it into a gizmo and convert it into VR" but it is feasible to do both.
It seems to me the VR version of any game would be more work so why restrict themselves to that and make less money? Seems insane.

As Cim said, there's more that goes into making a VR game than just tweaking some controls.

Think of it like if you were to say port a game made for phones to PC. Sure, the mouse cursor works as a substitute for touch controls in many cases, but unless the developers put some work into the port the result is likely to be a pretty lackluster experience on PC, and in some cases the game will become night unplayable (like with say The Bluecoats: North vs South). The jump from non-VR to VR is even greater than that and loads of games that were not purpose made for VR tends to be pretty bad in VR.

The VR market is pretty underserved right now with good games, so the games that actually end up being good tend to sell decently well. There's a fare amount of, well, not so great stuff released for VR, but the VR games that end up justifying owning a VR headset are pretty few and far between.

I believe that. Still wouldn't make as much money as just making it non VR entirely and selling it to a larger market though. At least not with title attached to a successful franchise like Metro.
But I can see why it would be "easier" for other games (provided they do a decent job) to make a splash in a smaller pond than to try and sell their games in a saturated non-VR FPS market of course so that's a pretty reasonable explanation.

I'm sure. I have played at my buddy's a few times but the games are pretty lackluster. Not necessarily bad but not good enough in general to justify the expense, let alone the physical hassle of the headset for me.

I can see myself wasting money on a VR device....maybe in 3 years?
If the story is as good as a Metro game, this will be awesome!

Considering that this isn't made by 4A Games and that is not related to Exodus, it won't be hard to hope that 4A might be working on a sequel while this title hits the store.

4A Games have previously confirmed they are working on a new installment of the main series, so yeah, this is just something different on the side.

Although this isn't a game I'll play due to it being VR exclusive, it is good news that the IP is still alive. I'll be looking forward to the next main game installment.

If HL: Alyx didn't push me into buying VR, then probably nothing will
