I think it will start dying soon... The game it's almost 7 years now, new games are born, with more appealing graphics that will attract to new people... Personally, after more than 900 hours (since 2008) and 455 of 477 achievements achieved, it has lost my interest to play it anymore. I feel that the community left it, leaving only some players, splitted in normal and MvM modes, traders, some pro players and new people with no experience, playing it because it's free.
I think it's the perfect moment to sell all my item, now that they still have value, get the money and run. I'm a bit scared that Valve suddenly stops giving TF2 support and all my items lose all their value.

Probably half-past never, even if Valve released TF3 tomorrow.

TF2 will be upgraded at no charge to TF3 and your items will be transferred. Nailed on.

There is no way Valve will allow this cash cow to stop breathing, or risk the sort of outcry that would surely accompany any move to shut up shop.

It may die a death of its own accord, but the market is still busy, and the game isn't close to dead yet.

I think that it will probably die in 7 or 10 years, TF2 is one of the biggest Valve's money maker and they will do EVERYTHING to keep it alive. It has been 7 years since TF2 was released, many multiplayer FPS games die after the first 2 years, Valve is doing everything they can to make people to play their game. And may be, just may be, it will never die (I'm not kidding)

Given the amount of items and their value, I don't think it will ever die :S A new game that allows all those items to carry over is the only way it will get done.

It will die when a hat-shaped alien civilization starts invading earth and gruesomely killing and torturing human beeings for years, until finally an uprising of humans mange to fight back and reclaim earth.. hats will forever be a symbol of evil in the minds of men, similar to Hitler.. thus TF2 will have no reason to exist anymore.

I give it 2-3 years, probably gonna see TF3 on the new source engine and some carryover/promo items for previous players. Development of non-seasonal/non-aesthetic (hats) content has been down lately, but they will probably add some more to MVM, a few community maps and maybe a new weapon or two (assuming they don't make anymore balance changes to the weapons).
