Will Smith punches Chris Rock at the Oscars
Oh good, a potato option that renders the poll useless.
Comment has been collapsed.
Do you guys think it was scripted?
Chris was throwing a punch until Smith threw a real one O.o
Comment has been collapsed.
The only reason I think the entire thing was scripted is, because last year the Oscars had an all-time low in viewership. No one cares anymore. Now people are actually talking about the show again.
Comment has been collapsed.
It looked a tiny bit staged to me. Chris Rock didn't react enough, but it was awkward.
Comment has been collapsed.
Exactly, the slap didn't sell for me. He reacted like he knew he was about to be slapped from that angle, just like in the movies. But I could be wrong. Either ways, its cheap to make a joke about someone with a condition.
Comment has been collapsed.
The only thing that felt genuine was the look at her wife's face when he dropped that joke. I can't understand why Will was still laughing at that moment like that.
Comment has been collapsed.
I can agree that it was "staged", just not the incident, but the laughs. I bet most of the audience was laughing out of custom, thinking "what a lame jokes".
But maybe that's just me. I rarely find american roast/stand up jokes to be funny at all. đ
Comment has been collapsed.
If there weren't a lot of laughs going on they could have funneled artificial ones in. I will say that crowd got dead silent when Will started yelling.
Comment has been collapsed.
If you look at the clips from that, you can see that he's still laughing from the previous joke about him. Then Rock makes the quip about Jada's hair. It happened off camera, so I imagine Will looks at his wife's face and kinda loses it.
Comment has been collapsed.
He slapped him. Talking crap about people's friends or family or joking in bad taste, getting slapped for it so? Guys do stuff like that. If it was outside a Bar or at a BBQ or something it would be no big deal, but the Oscars is a big formal thing so.....
Comment has been collapsed.
I mean... by any standard that was very mild celebrity roasting. It's not like he called her a whore.
Ok, she has an auto-immune disease but it's not like she had chemotherapy or something.
Ricky Gervais must be investing in life insurance right about now because if that's what happens when someone makes a very mild joke about a celebrity, imagine what will happen when Ricky Gervais hosts an award show again lol
Comment has been collapsed.
What would be the point though in having something like that happen?
It's not like people are going to tune in next year hoping for a fist fight...
People talking about a guy losing his shit on tv is not exactly what they want to be talked about.
Also, if it had been scripted, they wouldn't have dropped the live broadcast like a hot potato the minute it happened.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't know about that anymore. Studios now make most of their money virtually. What they actually make off a movie theater ticket is just not much and people are favoring streaming so they're making even less.
There definitely is money in social media trending and "mentions" now, for studios that sell product placement and that have shareholders but they won't make any money from a fight at the Oscars. Even the movie with Will Smith is not mentioned when people talk about the whole affair.
Comment has been collapsed.
Most of these movies are not theaters either way. It's simple about raising awareness of this outdated award ceremony. Most articles talking about the affair definitely mention Will Smith's movie, not sure what you are talking about. I think the idea is that people get to know movies they otherwise might not have known about.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's simple about raising awareness of this outdated award ceremony.
But again that won't make people go watch movies they simply don't care about. I have seen quite a few people talking about and mocking and bitching and blah blah about Will Smith and his acting out but I have yet to see someone go "well, all this really makes me want to check out the next Jane Campion movie".
Most articles talking about the affair definitely mention Will Smith's movie
Those articles would have talked about the Oscars one way or another anyway. I'm talking about the millions of comments, on social media, on youtube and other places these ceremonies are rarely even mentioned. Nobody cares about the movie he won an Oscar for.
And none of the people falling for the clickbait on any given site are going to get any renewed interest in Oscar movies because they care about a fistfight, staged or not so again I ask what would have been the point?
Comment has been collapsed.
I have nothing to back up. You said they staged it. I'm asking what would be the point of staging it and you said to make money. I said how would they make money and none of the answers you give me are going to make them money so yeah "agree to disagree" if you want but you're the one still answering.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sure you have to back up stuff, sentences like this:
But again that won't make people go watch movies they simply don't care about.
Nobody cares about the movie he won an Oscar for.
none of the people falling for the clickbait on any given site are going to get any renewed interest in Oscar movies
These are not fact, these are your opinions. Your anecdotal evidence is not statistics. I don't have counterproof, don't get me wrong, that's why I said this won't be fruitful.
Comment has been collapsed.
You want statistical evidence of something not being staged... what's your mathematical evidence it was staged?
Your entire premise is by nature hypothetical. It's like asking statistical evidence God doesn't exist. You give me evidence it exists and I'll disprove it.
Comment has been collapsed.
I never said it was staged, that was you, mate:)
I am not even looking for statistical evidence for that, that wouldn't even make sense. I am looking for statistical evidence for your claims, that I pointed out in my previous comment. Those are related to audience engagement and interest in movies.
Comment has been collapsed.
Chris Rock definitely isn't good enough an actor. Will Smith sucks too but Rock definitely is no actor.
But attracting an audience based upon negative publicity seems too desperate and short sighted, specially for something that's supposed to be a serious award ceremony.
Exactly. It's as if the Superbowl was running out of commercials to get an audience so they would pretend a team is cheating to win. That might get people to talk about it for sure but that won't get them more credibility or people to tune in next time.
Comment has been collapsed.
I think I have only seen Chris Rock in two movies. Dogma and Lethal Weapon 4 (the first one because Kevin Smith was still making fun movies at the time and the second one because I was on a plane and there was no parachute), and he sucked in both, and let me tell you he didn't exactly have hard parts so yeah I'm pretty sure he can't act shocked to save his life.
Agreed about Will Smith though. It feels like he's sometimes trying too hard, sometimes not trying at all.
Comment has been collapsed.
the oscars have lost any credibility and as the views plummet actors were allowed to generate controversy, the audience couldn't care about the winners any less, but news articles will get a field day over this staged event
Comment has been collapsed.
well, the academy actually makes money with the oscars, and while it most likely has a stable ground, im sure viewership and broadcast deals have a part in it
I wasnt thinking about money on my first thought rather its primary purpouse, the perfect venue for self promotion.
if we dont watch there is nothing to promote, hell, these people wouldnt even talk about politics if it wasnt convenient for them
Comment has been collapsed.
They make money off the broadcast, sure but not in restrospect. The broadcast is live in most countries so there is no resell money to be made after something happens. The money paid for clips of the event goes to ABC and most of the clips that are going to be shown over and over, which is on social media, they're not making a cent from.
It won't raise the price of ads next year either because as I said, nobody is going to expect a repeat.
Comment has been collapsed.
The Oscars used that guy getting tossed out the window meme...
"We need a way to make people watch the Oscars again!"
"How about having Amy Schumer present it?"
"How about even more diversity than last year?"
"How about leaving politics out of movies and getting a host people like?"
crash bam boom! Last guy flies out the window
Comment has been collapsed.
i would vote for a roundtable post show with all the traumatized comedians
Comment has been collapsed.
"How about leaving politics out of movies and getting a host people like?"
The real issue is that everything has been politicized. Remember when politics were about voting for people or not, instead of racism, women's bodies, the weather, the right to live as you are etc?
Comment has been collapsed.
Just an FYI, he didn't punch Rock, he smacked him. When I first saw it I thought it might be staged, but there's a lot of things that happended after the slap that led me to believe otherwise. For those not aware there's also several years of issues between Chris Rock and the Smiths.
Comment has been collapsed.
What issues if i can ask?
A few years back Pinkett-Smith tried to get people to "boycott" the Oscars, going on and on about the fact her husband not being nominated for I can't remember what slobberfest of a movie, was racism.
Chris Rock made fun of it at the ceremony saying something like "Isn't she on tv? Her saying she's going to boycott the Oscars is like me saying I am boycotting Rihanna's pants... I wasn't invited anyway".
I don't think that joke or the new one are any reason to lose it and assault a guy in public though.
Comment has been collapsed.
They used to be cool a long time ago and somewhere down the line they parted ways and the reason wasn't made public. Then in 2016 Chris Rock made a joke about him and his wife at an awards show and then in 2018 Chris Rock this happened on social media:
Will wished his ex-wife a happy birthday and on instagram with a throw back pic of them together saying "Happy Bday, @shereezampino. #BestBabyMamaEver! :-) I Love You, Ree-Ree". Chris Rock replies "Wow, you have a very understanding wife." Will's ex wife replies "Don't hate."
There's almost certainly a lot of stuff that happened that wasn't in the eye of the public as well. So this seemed to be coming to a head for awhile.
Comment has been collapsed.
The big thing a lot of people are posting about is that Will was laughing originally. He actually addresses that in his speach when he won the award later. Basically he said something about how in hollywood when someone insults or disrespects you they expect you to blow it off and laugh about it. I think he was just sucking it up due to tons of eyes being on him and when he saw Jada's face he just said fuck it I'm tired of this shit. In his award speech he addresses a few things, so to some it might be worth watching.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, that's my impression. The laugh didn't seem genuine. Like most laughs there I guess.
Oscars lean towards making comedy shows out of the ceremony, hoping it will attract viewers, but IMO it just gets more and more ridiculous. ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
In that situation with what I saw, yes, I think he should have been escorted out. Whenever someone loses their cool like that I feel it's best to take them out of the situation to prevent any possible further issues. There were people who came up to him after, other celebrities, his PR guy, people running the event etc. etc. When it happened they very well could have been ready to escort him out, but when talked to they felt he was okay and that the situation wouldn't escalate any further. There was a response from Chris Rock that said he didn't want to press charges so he was more than likely asked this by people. More than likely the cops made there way there when the alteraction was going on to see what Chris Rock wanted to do.

Via NBC News
"LOS ANGELES â Police say comedian Chris Rock declined to file a report against Will Smith after the actor appeared to have slapped him during the live broadcast of the annual Academy Awards ceremony. That means the Los Angeles Police Department, which has basic jurisdiction where the show was produced Sunday, will not investigate or pursue possible charges against Smith. "LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program," the department said in a statement. "The incident involved one individual slapping another," the LAPD continued. "The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report." Rock's representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Senior sources at the department said officers usually wouldn't take action in such a situation â a possible misdemeanor battery investigation â unless there was a desire to press charges and help fill out an incident report. That would involve the self-described victimâs contacting police directly, the sources said."

Yeah, probably. I don't think anything is going to come of it, at least not yet. Chris Rock already said he's not pressing charges.

They cut audio off of most of it. I watched an Asian broadcast of it on twitter to hear everything.

Chris Rock was (to some extent) punching down. That can be the sign of poor comedian.
Will Smith threw a punch, and then tried to pass it off as an appropriate response due to 'love'. That's the sign of an abuser, and a pathetic loser.
I've never been a fan of Chris Rock, but have to give Kudos on his reaction. I hope Will's pathetic display has appropriate consequences.

Chris Rock did a good job at keeping his composure in my opinion. He wanted to say other things, but stopped himself.

i guess their marriage is open to anything except jokes lol orrrr
his wife can take a dick but cant take a joke lol XD
but seriously if you look again , will did laugh at the joke but then his wife gave him that look and he changed his mid
at this point he's basically her slave
Comment has been collapsed.
one joke would be good .
Chris Rock did even insult harass her before on Oscars she boycotted and even before that .
he made probably hundreds of jokes on places she didnt attend .
im against violence but tbh i would have hoped his punch would have atleast send him flying but probably PR stunt anyway .
Comment has been collapsed.
will could've turned this on him by just walking to the stage and told him she's sick and be more respectable
all people will turn on chris for that joke but i guess he was quick to act and please his wife
and lets be honest , if someone like the rock said that joke would smith slap him like that ?!!
Comment has been collapsed.
Chris Rock did even insult harass her before on Oscars she boycotted and even before that .
It was like 6 years ago and he didn't "harass" her, he made a joke at the Oscars that boycotting the Oscars was a meaningless gesture when you are not nominated. And it is.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ridiculous that Will Smith is chivalrous now after heâs happily shared his wife with others.
Comment has been collapsed.
She's her own person, not someone to "share". I'm not a fan of the violence, but I don't see where their relationship agreement takes any place in it.

This comment summarises the absurdity / hypocrisy:

I have no opinion except second-hand embarrassment. So, potato.
Comment has been collapsed.
Regardless of how "nice" the joke was (and honestly there's been waaaaay worse said at any given award ceremony and I'm not even talking about Ricky Gervais roasting celebrities), the correct response would have been to take the guy aside, backstage and tell him to shut the fuck up. Not to storm the stage like an escaped psych ward patient to assault the guy.
Then, after a good talk with his publicity agency, he makes a speech about being a crusader for love, by the powers God vested in him.... I mean seriously?
Comment has been collapsed.
People throw around the term "white privilege" often, but there is only the privilege of the rich and famous. Imagine enjoying that kind of privilege where you can just assault someone in public, then go back to your seat as nothing happened.
Comment has been collapsed.
Definitely not staged. Their faces show real emotion, and none of them are THAT good when it comes to acting.
Will first fucked up by laughing at something his wife felt deeply insecure about, she noticed and glared at husband with eyes of death. He then pulled out his alpha-male-defender-of-family-and-save-own-face-card and went full nutter.
All in all, ridicilous.. and kinda entertaining tbh.
Comment has been collapsed.
Not to mention he pulled the "I'm defending my family" card to excuse his frankly unnecessary violence.
I mean... imagine the bubble this guy lives in that he is assaulting someone for a joke. Most black men in America have bigger fish to fry, and bigger threats to "defend" their loved ones against than a harmless joke.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ricky Gervais is probably questioning his whole existence after this.
lmao or looking for a good life insurance
And people keep repeating "she has a disease". Okay, sure she has an auto-immune disease and I'm sure it can leave a woman especially psychologically vulnerable but it's not lupus. She is losing her hair. Not fun I'm sure but as an excuse for someone else throwing a fit and assaulting someone? Nah. Doesn't quite work. It was an obvious overreaction from a guy who felt his masculinity called into question when gossip circulated about his wife seeing other people and was trying to assert himself.
Comment has been collapsed.
Jada has traction alopecia. People are acting like she has stage 4 cancer or something.
Honestly I think he's insecure and did all of this after being exposed as a cuck who cried on his wife's internet talk show.
He's slapping the wrong guy to make up for his manhood being ripped from him.
Comment has been collapsed.
Are you really shaming a man for crying while he talks about his childhood trauma and difficult experiences? When showing vulnerability is like, the definition of strength. Hiding pain to always seem tough is the sadder, much less healthy option, and attitudes like yours contribute to the fact that many men feel like they have to.
Also, open relationships â cuck. The latter is a kink thing, while the former grants the same freedom to both parties. But I don't think I can argue you out of your super manly masculine man mindset, anyways.
Comment has been collapsed.
Are you really shaming a man for crying while he talks about his childhood trauma and difficult experiences?
I don't think that was the point but I do think he was trying to assert himself because yes expressing your feelings is not seen as masculine. Violence is.
Both are unfortunate, obviously.
Comment has been collapsed.
Oscars are so boring, dumb and wothless that I even forgot that it was happening xD Guess they have to remind people about it somehow.
Feels staged.
Comment has been collapsed.
If I were in Chirs Rock`s shoes I would have kept making jokes about them even more throughout the night.
Oscars really need a hosts like Ricky Gervais or Jimmy Carr to roast them savagely and kill their egos.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'd say it's hardly "killing their egos" when you joke about someone's health issues.
I absolutely loved Ricky Gervais years, but this IMO was a bit over the line. Just like Will hitting Rock of course. A bit tasteless joke. Obviously he ignored that it's a touchy subject considering they know each other well. Gervais has addressed this that he doesn't touch such subjects for example.
Comment has been collapsed.
Here's a slow motion of the slap. It clearly is not a staged near miss, Will nailed him.
Also, during break Denzel and Will's publicist went to talk to him and you can see Will wipe his tears.
I think it was a bad joke but Will's reaction was over the line. Chris could easily double down after that and make some easy jokes but he handled it like a pro.
I'm more surprised they allowed Will to stay in the venue when he assaulted someone on live tv.
Comment has been collapsed.

Same. They are not supposed to know who won the awards but tbh, I doubt they would have allowed him to stay if they didn't already know he was the winner and they didn't want to give the award to an empty seat...

Well that makes the Oscars somewhat more interesting again for people.
His wife has a disease that makes his wife bald, hence why the G.I Jane "joke" hit wrong.
