I'm working in a user helpdesk. Last week a user called and said that he
can't work. the icon on his desktop for his application were gone. We
can't explain it and looked remote on his system. All shows okay.
He said there is a dot but no icon.

We didn't see the a dot and haven't to know, which icon he needed. Bad situation.
We asked further and he always told something from this dot and he can't work
because of disappearing of his icon.

After 30 minutes we got the solution: He placed the icon in the middle of the
desktop. After a update, the icons on the desktop are sorted. Now the icon where
sorted on the left side. But whats up with this mysterious point?

If you are laughing loud, don't read further. Really!

With a Pen he have painted a dot on his monitor at this position, where the icon
have to be. He only looked at his point in clicked ON THE POINT to start the
application. He never looked for the icon. HE REALLY PAINTED A MARKER ON THE MONITOR!

If someone asked (and you will) ...thats for real!

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > Magnifier.

There's also large text mode, large icons and large mouse mode for Windows.

Strangely, I don't feel like laughing or crying.

More like feeling sorry for that guy. What make him think it was a good idea to draw on a monitor?

maybe he thought that paint works by drawing on it and forgot about it and that would be how it the dot appeared.

Once helping an older lady with her computer - in the background of her wallpaper picture there was a handicap sign. She was convinced this sign was an icon on her desktop and was frustrated that she couldn't move it, despite my attempts to explain that it was just her wallpaper. Ended up just telling her to stop clicking on it or something bad could happen to her PC.
