Any Space combat sims fans around recommend the X series?

Im a big fan of Wing Commander and Freespace games and I was wondering if those X games that are on sale are any good.

I have a couple of bucks from leftover wallet money and can only buy one: X:Tension, X:Beyond the Frontier and X2:The Threat.

Any advice or words from experienced players would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

But what's the balance between combat and sim (as in trading / building)? Any particular recommendations for combat-focused games FOUND ON STEAM?

I have to say i never got into the X series, just not enough story...

But if you love Freespace i surely think you will love Freelancer, just a little less story but way more exploring and you can play it coop ^^. Its playable with mouse and keyboard, i think Joystick too.

And if you like star wars maybe ALL star wars space sim titles, especially Tie Fighter, X-wing, Xwing vs Tie Fighter AND X-wing Alliance

I picked up Freespace 2 on GOG. I wish GOG would pick up the Star Wars ones you mentioned.

I'm verry interested in X3 but I'm not sure which one to get. Could I just jump in with TC? does it still hold up to this day in terms of visuals and the UI? I want to be a feared pirate who pillages trader ships.
