I got a copy of Dead Space from a friend today. Previously I felt that the game was kind of average, overrated.

I was wrong. So, so wrong. Wrong enough to be considering writing an apology to the developers and buying my own copies of the next two games right now, even before I've reached the end.

So, my question, have you have bought a game which came out years previously which you believed to be quite average, yet turned out to be an incredible game for you?

Ascension to the throne. I thought it would be a cheap under budget game from the start of the game, but it turned out to be a cool game. The turned based fights with the ability to recruit several different unit types was great. It was done kind of like that in the Playstation 2 heroes of might and magic game, so if you liked that, then this has a similar style.

Botanicula, Zen Bound 2, Cargo Commander, Shoot Many Robots, Pinball FX2, Pid, Madballs.....lots of games are like that...

theres a shitload of games that generally people have a low opinion of them, without even playing them, or because of the metacritic score, and they got it all wrong because theyre badass...

Just Cause 2. I even went ahead and said it was pretty average after playing about an hour. It drew me in afterwards, so I got an extra copy and gave it away as atonement.

Yeah, I was surprised at how great Just Cause 2 is... the map is just huge and the vehicles are awesome. Moving around with the parachute + grappling hook is pretty awesome too. Also, there are plenty of destructibles :)

mass effect games, one steam friend told me to play them but i was sceptic because i am not that fan of space games. Now they're my favorites.

The Arma series.

Get DICE to do the animations and voice work, and dear God, we could have a FPS masterpiece on our hands.

You mean Operation Flashpoint and ArmA2, because ArmA was mediocre and ArmA3 is a stinking turd.

Well, Arma III is in Beta, so give it a chance.

I was thinking more along the lines of ArmA II, though.

Vessel.
It looked like just another platform game with a few puzzles thrown in, but it's actually an awesome puzzle game with unique puzzles I had not seen in other games .. with some platforming thrown in.

King's Bounty: Crossworlds. Despite being seen in a ton of bundles that some consider to be of poor quality, the King's Bounty games are absolutely stellar.

No, Steam game, but whatever: Smite
Thought I would hate it, because I don't like MOBA in general, so my friends forced me to play it.
I'm glad they did.

Started playing, about a year before got my key to Dota 2.
Stopped playing about a month later, they made every new champion with
cc and kind of OP just so more ppl would buy it, then nerf it next patch
didn't like that at time. Now I don't know if there are any changes.

I still wonder why they didn't bother rebalancing the champs and the game,
but just forced out new champions and destroy the balance even more.

Anachronox, Solar 2 and Obscure on the PS2. If you're looking for games that noone seems to care about, yet they're awesome, that is.

It's a shame EA aborted any possibility of a sequel for Saboteur. With a little polish, that game would be a classic.

Ion Assault - turned it on just because there were cards in it, otherwise
it would probably be still uninstalled in my library

Well it turned out to be a great short game.

oh and the first game like that was FFVII, which got me hooked totally
for the whole series (at least till X-2)
