The Tropico games. I've played the first one mostly but they're pretty damn fun. If you like to manage economics, make your citizens happy and keep them happy, and pretty much building your own city on an island, I would recommend trying out the games. Also, the music.

Fallout, fallout 2, Team Fortress 2
'Secretly' awesome.

Anyway, personal pick: Bioshock 2. I honestly think it's a better game than either the first game or Infinite, minute-to-minute gameplay wise. The story of the first was smarter and the plot of the second had more emotional connection but I honestly have no idea why people bashed/continue to bash the second game. It's the best game of the three.

I didnt play them for the longest time because I thought they were "meh". I recently started them and am quite enjoying them.
I dunno, maybe you can't read? I did what the OP asked and listed games I THOUGHT WEREN'T GOOD BUT SURPRISED ME BY BEING AWESOME.

Brütal Legend is indeed quite awesome... sometimes I'd just roam around to listen to the soundtrack.
Too bad it's not really that well known on the PC (probably better known on consoles), I just happened to install it because it was on a Humble Bundle and has Jack Black on it :P

Dead Space is sooo amazing. I'm glad you saw the light. :3
For me, The Binding of Isaac. I heard very mixed opinions and it looked like the learning curve was too steep to be worth it, but now I've got 160 hours in it on Steam and 250 on the DRM free version I had before. So excellent.

They say "rogue-like" because of randomly generated levels. Basically that is some kind of dungeon-crawling in dungeons that look like Legend of Zelda's dungeons... Each room can have random pits, enemies and loot...
I's a very, very good game with dark humour, huge replayability (each game is different from the previous considering the random generation) ... Sometimes you get amazing loot, sometimes not.
You should watch some gameplay and eventually buy it - it's quite cheap and deserves to be bought.
I also suggest the use of xpadder with a pad : makes the game even more enjoyable, in my opinion.

Heh, Faerie Solitaire is like that >> http://store.steampowered.com/app/38600/
I had a 90% off voucher and spare money in my steam wallet so grabbed it just to farm the trading cards, but man .. i've racked up hours in the game - it's actually a pretty cool card game!
Definitely one to play with the sound off though, such annoying generic video game music :P

Yeah, that one's definitely a bit of a hidden gem!
For me it was both EQ2 and City of Heroes. Old guild leader from EQ1 and WoW told me both games were terrible; I believed him. Later on once each went F2P I tried them anyway and was kicking myself for not ignoring him sooner!
Classic consoles, Secret of Evermore. I heard it talked down a lot but if you liked Secret of Mana it was absolutely worth a shot, to see if it clicked with you.

Can you explain what made Showdown Effect and Binary Domain worthwhile? I'm curious about them and need a push to get interested.
I couldn't convince myself to set up Binary Domain with my microphone. That seems like a weird hassle that wouldn't work very well.

1st step to playing Binary Domain is to turn off voice recognition to be honest, its the games weakest link, its a fun 3rd person shooter, the story was actually well done surprisingly, most of the characters have some kind of depth or unique personality. Blowing up robots is ridiculously fun, I mean I think I had more fun killing stuff in this game then any other in a long time, boss battles are also well done and fun. Its a really underrated game honestly.
I liked Shadowdown Effect because for me it translated 2D into the gameplay characteristics of an FPS which to me was really neat, like you actually need timing and skill to be good at it, instead of shoot in any direction and auto win. Gotta play more, online seemed pretty populated when I played.

Alright, in that case, I recommend these to you:
Binary Domain sounds a bit like Hard Reset from the reviews + what you said. It's great. It sort of reminds me of a close-quarters Serious Sam.
Showdown Effect sounds a lot like Soldat (which you can play for free without being able to change costumes), which is one of my favorite games. You need to try it if you haven't.

Played some Hard Reset while fun(Reminds me of a lot of 90s fps games actually) Binary Domain plays more like a better Gears Of War imo, I didn't really like GOW though....
Never tried that one, will look into it though, thanks.

How can you say that if you dont even have it on Steam?

Yes, really. I decided to ignore all these bad comments and give it a try, which ended on having 187+ hours in less than 2 weeks. It's a good game in my opinion

dead space 1 was fun and scary but dead space 2 and 3 are not scary D: i mean why?

This is just a personal opinion, but I find with F.E.A.R. and so far Dead Space, horror isn't what I'm most interested with these games. It's there and it adds atmosphere, but the story is what I find is really good (as well as all the technical stuff).
I guess they had to try and make their game suit the lowest common denominator in the end.

Banned from the store only but activable ? Because for example, Fallout 3 is banned from India because of the mutant cows in the game ("Brahmins") but you can actually activate and play the game there if you've managed to get it from someone else.
Maybe it's the same in Australia ; can't buy there but activate and play is okay... ?

Whoops, my bad! It's definitely not on Steam, but they recently announced the Director's Cut for $50 at retail on a couple platforms, so I guess I'll have to get it there. Not sure why Valve hasn't got round to unlocking it for our region yet though.
EDIT: I mean, yeah it's not on the Store for an Australian account, but I'm sure it'd be activatable. However, seeing as I'm investing for a PS3 once the PS4 comes out (don't ask), I think I might purchase it with the PS3 and Bioshock Special Edition (already got all 3 and all DLC on PC, but I want PS3 for that sweet museum level).

Borderlands. Tried it first for 2-3 hours, and deleted it.
2 years later (now): one of the best games ever.

One game I'd never heard of and didn't expect much from is Love+. I got it from the really nice Groupees Retro bundle from April. I tried it and got seriously addicted. It's a 2D sidescroller where you can only walk and jump. You have 100 lives to beat the 11 stages (there's no health bar, just insta-deaths). You can press a button at any time to make a checkpoint you'll go back to if you die, but each time you make a checkpoint you'll decrease your total score. At the end you get a score based on how many lives you have left and how many save points you created.
It only takes 40-50 minutes to beat, but I found myself replaying it several times. I eventually made it onto the leaderboard (currently I'm tied for 96th). :)

I got a copy of Dead Space from a friend today. Previously I felt that the game was kind of average, overrated.
I was wrong. So, so wrong. Wrong enough to be considering writing an apology to the developers and buying my own copies of the next two games right now, even before I've reached the end.
So, my question, have you have bought a game which came out years previously which you believed to be quite average, yet turned out to be an incredible game for you?
