Do you disable ads on sites you like (in general) in order to support them?
I always disable it on Steamgifts. Heck, after all, cg only implemented ads on Steamgifts due to the community pressuring him into doing so.

Honestly, I can't be convinced to disable ad blocks after I've gotten viruses in an advert on a trusted site.

Right, because I should just dump the compatibly it offers to get something which can still get viruses itself. If you can browse the internet with it, there is bound to be a virus that can target it. Nothing is free of them. So I'll just block the stuff that would get the viruses.

Maybe I should get you HuniePop to scratch that itch ;)

I used to never use adblock on youtube to support youtubers i enjoy, but as youtube grew it lets them put multiple adds in the same video ... i watch a 20 min video with 6 adds so i had enough and now i use adblock only on youtube if they change heir ways and they let only one skipable advertisement at the start of the video i will disable it but since they are greedy i doupt it

If CG only added them after being pressured by the community to do so, then he obviously doesn't need or really want the ad revenue ... so I'll keep using adblock.
If he wants to add a donate button, that's a different story. I'd much rather donate directly.

If ads were actually worth unblocking I might be more willing to put up with them. There are better ways to fund community-focused websites like this.
The Guardian is the only site I give a pass atm and as soon as I can afford to pay their membership thing that'll fuck off too. Ads are godawful and pay a pittance to site owners, the death of them will be a magical thing.

Hm, I definitely would like to support sites I like, but I'd like to understand the reasoning.
As far as I know, no ads pay the site owners per view (since that could be easily exploited), so most ads pay per click, some even per certain actions past the ad (e.g. an actual purchase). So just enabling ads is not helping anyone, right? Or did cg manage to find an ad network that pays per view?…

No thanks, ads are bad no matter what site they are on. If website owners need cash that badly, then they should just charge for use, even if it's just to keep the site up.

if cg could eliminate dubious ads such as the g2a ones and alikes, I will do so by all means.

Ads are based on a users search/browsing history so yo have yourself to blame for those even though cg could contact the ad provider to have certain ads removed.

Are you being ironic? Ads often are exactly frigging pop ups blocking half of the screen, autoplaying video and audio.
Also, good job playing the entitlement special card.

I am being serious and I am talking about Steamgifts where I never experienced any pop ups, not websites and ads in general. I am also blocking ads on webs where they are overly distruptive, but in the end, I tend not to frequent such websites.

I got ads like that a while ago too, but in the last year I can't remember getting anything with music or any sound around here. Guess it depends on the region, browser, other sites visited and whatnot. I'd also guess that maybe companies have realized annoying ads like those are the reason adblock is used in most cases, so they are abandoning them? I hope.

I'd honestly rather donate than let ads display. I don't believe in automatic data collection. I'd tell any living person anything that want to know about me (within reason), but I don't want my information stored on a server that's publicly accessible, whether it's used to serve me content or not. Proudly using uBlock Origin + NoScript everywhere.

I've been worrying about the state of internet advertising. Adblock is killing the already-inefficient industry of banner ads, the longtime staple of internet advertising. And the industry is adapting in ugly ways. Ads are gone from our webpages, but then YouTube gets 30-second unskippable ads. An Adblock comes out for that, now they're on YouTube Mobile. The end result of this trend is paywalls, Adblock-blockers, "complete a survey to read this article", and all of the other corporate crap that we now have to wade through on so many sites now.
So now, I unblock websites I enjoy, especially ones not owned by billion-dollar corporation, to prevent them having to go that route just to survive.
Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of sites I can't stand the ads on. Pre-Adblock, I had to make sure Grandma wasn't around before browsing a site like Pirate Bay.
But in my short time here, I've come to love this site, and I want to support it however I can.
