I've been worrying about the state of internet advertising. Adblock is killing the already-inefficient industry of banner ads, the longtime staple of internet advertising. And the industry is adapting in ugly ways. Ads are gone from our webpages, but then YouTube gets 30-second unskippable ads. An Adblock comes out for that, now they're on YouTube Mobile. The end result of this trend is paywalls, Adblock-blockers, "complete a survey to read this article", and all of the other corporate crap that we now have to wade through on so many sites now.

So now, I unblock websites I enjoy, especially ones not owned by billion-dollar corporation, to prevent them having to go that route just to survive.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of sites I can't stand the ads on. Pre-Adblock, I had to make sure Grandma wasn't around before browsing a site like Pirate Bay.

But in my short time here, I've come to love this site, and I want to support it however I can.

Do you disable ads on sites you like (in general) in order to support them?

Maybe I'm too old but I hardly notice ads anymore and I've never felt the need to adblock other than a pop up blocker. I also don't own a dvr so I have to deal with ads when I watch tv and I'm too cheap to buy ad free hulu or youtube so ads there too. Also as an American I get tons of ads just driving to the store on the radio, billboards, and sides of cars. As a sweepstakes addict I also get hundreds of ads per day in my email and almost daily ads in my snail mail. Can't escape them might as well ignore them.

I wish more people were like you OP, there are sites which are overloaded with ads that should be blocked, but I'm all for disabling it on sites that you enjoy. I actually have seen useful ads on several occasions.

I've been using adblockers since they first showed up, and I won't step back, no matter what.
Not being pressured by my computer-illiterate relatives to clean their PCs of malware is too big of a benefit, and pages load way faster too.
Besides, for every single person using any form of adblocking, there're at least 100 who don't, so sites still get their revenue.

TL;DR

Ads are the disease, adblockers are the cure.

I add sites I like to whitelist, but they get off from the list immediately if there ever comes a sound or something pops up or flashes.
