Is it actually free now?

"Actually, it's not a subscription model but an access to the game for a limited time," ."You pay for having access to the game for one period and that's it. When the time is over, you have to buy the game again for the time that you want to access it again."

That quote always kills me

Always was free if you play only season tracks.

From what I could gather it's really it's more of a demo. You don't get all tracks. You're locked out of the track of the day.
The track editor you get access to lets you make tracks, but you can't play them. Not even the ones you make yourself...
You rent access to the full game by paying 1.67€ a month for the three-year pass. Trackmania United Forever released in 2008 and was free.

you can play the seasonal campain including 25 tracks, changing every 3 months
you can also get a standard access for 10€ a year which allows you to play any and all tracks in the game, which is nice. club access for 20 a year is just for clubs and customisation

You can play the season campaign that changes. It's not like a demo, you get acces to only one the season tracks.

Because the game doesn't kick you and tell you "Pay if you want to play again", you can play all you want the season maps that change every 3 months for everyone, not only free users. You can still appear in the rankings with other users and such..

You're describing a trial with your first line. For all intents and purposes, this is a demo.

It's a demo if game stops you from playing past a certain point (time or level or rank whatever).
You can play this forever with all the progression you earn as long as you stick to seasonal tracks.

No, this is a demo. Not the full product, but a taste. It does stop you playing the full content as outlined previously, and effectively forces you to pay a subscription if you want to access the full game, and all the features that come along with it. I don't want to repeat what I wrote originally, so go read that again. There are a lot of other things that are excluded as ormax3 listed in his screenshot comparison between the versions. You can't even chat for gods sake, and the game has ads lol.

if it was me i would have a free version on a different game listing as a "lite" season play only version and a paid/sub version

In software terms, this is the freemium concept.
Offering a perpetually free, but limited version of your product with premium features being available on a subscription basis.

I think why others disagree with you about it being a demo is that (a) it's not time limited and (b) its not static, the seasonal maps change over time.

I wouldn't consider what I've read about the free version of the game here as a demo myself , but I am fully aware that definitions can be different and won't argue with you over doing so. End of the day, what matters is what you're being offered, not that you label it as freemium or demo or whatever.

I get where you're coming from. I just see it as a demonstration of the full product, and you have to pay to actually access the full content.

Whatever it's labeled as, it's terrible. Paying a subscription that amounts to more than the cost of the full game for a 3 year pass is ridiculous. This isn't an MMO. This is a single game that's being outright rented to you. Oh, you can get a taste, but you miss out on the good parts unless you pay up every month.

I agree with you. The other user is saying it's a demo, but if you take by definition of the word it is not. There is a difference in the wording that have to be considered.

That's a weird comeback. But hey, you do you. You were however being incredibly pedantic. I guess the truth stings. Have fun with the childish comebacks ¯\(ツ)

Even TrackMania Nations Forever (from 2008) is considered a free subset version of the full one Trackmania United Forever.

Here is a quote from their website:

What is the difference between the free game and the full game?

TrackMania Nations Forever is the free version of the game, where you can play on the Stadium environment. Some features are disabled and can be activated by upgrading to Trackmania United Forever. If you like Nations, you will love United, with 6 more original racing environments, more tracks, a huge solo campaign and more features to discover.

At least the full game was a one-time purchase, not a subscription model like the new one 🤮

From todays perspective, that makes sense.
Having played Nations back in the days and been around for the "new" stuff that United brought, I've never seen Nations (and the updated Nations Forever) as an incomplete game however.

Stadium is the core TrackMania experience to me and the most popular (at least it was back when I played actively), United introduced a few nice variations, but in my perspective, its more like a deluxe version / DLC for Nations, not Nations being a demo for United.

That being said, I have no idea what the reboot offers. My days with TrackMania are over.
But I've had countless of hours of fun with TM Nations Forever in both multiplayer and best time singleplayer with so many custom maps.
It was an awesome game.

the new game definitely looks good and fun, but what's wrong with it is the monetization model...

interesting... a bundle for this one has been created. i was waiting for a long time to "complete the set" but they never had the best market practice available, so i ended up ignoring these titles for a very long time. thanks for make me notice this... even indirectly. :P
