Can somebody explain to me why teh f$#! everybody is thanking in the comments in every goddamn game? I get that you're thankful for the opportunity but it's a given you are thankful for that. Why?

It is not a certainty with everyone. Some people like to be courteous and thank contributors for their gifts.

The majority just drop off their spam for the day and don't even read the giveaway description.

I hear most contributors appreciate long columns of comments on their giveaways though, so I've been considering starting thanks-spamming as well.

I know people have very different opinions about this matter but personally I do not see it as a spam for few reason:

  • If gifter likes them, they make him/her feel good. It is a positve feedback which might encourage contributors give more. At least it is better than no thanks (including from the winner).
  • It shows that you appreciate the gifter and the giveaway at least that much that you can spare few seconds of your time to drop in simple message. Mind you, about 9 out of 10 do not do this.

I can understand why someone would not do this. In my opinion it is fine and should not be mandatory (as demanded by some) but I cannot undestand why these people would want others to stop it.

"I hear most contributors appreciate long columns of comments on their giveaways though, so I've been considering starting thanks-spamming as well."

This kind of mentality is sad. People miss the point entirely when they do that.

If you're openly seeing it as insincere then why the hell are you even considering to do it? It's that mindless "thanks" without reading the description that creates cynicism and causes others to miss the point entirely and jump on the shallow-thanks-bandwagon.

My suggestion would be to learn to understand why people say thanks, first. (the more sincere ones, that is)

A great step forward would be to feel empathy: put yourself in the gifter's shoes and ask yourself how hard it would've been for you to have done the same.

Then, once you understand the sacrifice involved from some of the gifters (not all of them, because I'm not naive) then try to express this into words:

  • If the gifter wrote a description in his giveaway, then write something about it.

  • Explain why you're joining the giveaway or why you appreciate the giveaway so much.

  • Put some personality in your comment: agree or disagree with what the gifter wrote.

  • Damn... thank a giveaway without joining it, even

But, most importantly, these things should be spontaneous and heart-felt. If they're not then don't even bother faking what your barren soul cannot conceive on its own.

These are just a few examples of the mentality behind it. Doing so shows that you put a dash of effort into your comment, making it stand out from the rest... and I believe that any gifter would appreciate that, even the most cynical, because the sincerity shows.

Too much work involved? Think of it as the least you could do.

Anyway, I'm far from being a paragon of gratefulness, because some of my comments do sound stale sometimes (even though I am thankful), but I always try to put some effort in them when something good comes to mind.

But if everyone is just going "thanks" and it feels like false courtesy. I don't believe even half of these people are actually thankful.

but it's not everyone.

let's see, the featured giveaway has 238 Entries but only 15 comments... that's not a lot of people..

well, they can, so they do it. maybe you think that constantly writing the same thing in every giveaway is lame and idiotic, yet other may be happy that those who enter show at least some appreciation, many people just enter and don't give a fuck anymore, they sometimes don't even know what game did they enter. and btw, there were many topics like this before, i suggest you do the search before you make some useless piece of thread on the forums next time. your comments rate is just so awesome i can't even believe i did answer you here. goodbye sir!

I don't comment on games, because im grateful for every opportunity and I don't want to spam thanks in every game I enter.

1 decade ago

well, the way i see it is that you are just too fucking lazy to even write one single word of appreciation to let the guy know that you actually entered his giveaway and are grateful for the opportunity.

1 decade ago
Permalink

I'm not lazy, I just would feel insincere by going "thanks" like everyone else.

In this case write an intelligent and sympathetic thank you in every giveaway you enter.

so you don't write 'thanks' because everyone else is. ever thought of becoming creative and writing something different perhaps? i had many conversations in the giveaway comments. i wouldn't consider not writing anything at all a better choice and i think many people who gave away something would agree. it's sad to see 1000 entries and 10 comments you know.

+1. I've only given away two games, but the repeated thanks seemed silly. I didn't bother reading past the first page.

1 decade ago

But constantly spamming thanks is better? The people giving away the game probably don't believe in any of these thanks

1 decade ago

try to giveaway game at first, then speak whether people do believe this 'thankses' or not. i myself like it when people write anything in a giveaway because it can always start a conversation, i don't mind even something like 'fuck you'. whatever.

I would, if I could to show my appreciation, I just don't have the money to buy games to giveaway.

1 decade ago

Not everyone does even that. Some people are entering just to spent points, get a game in their library (no intent of playing it) and lets not get even started with people who will trade their win away.

I have tabs open right now, so that i can read the comments on my giveaways. Why would i not believe the ones commenting? The ones that never say thanks, even after receiving the gift are the ones that bug me...

I feel it is insincere and don't bother most of the time for that reason, but if there isn't a comment already, I'll leave something.

Still, if given the chance, I'd rather respond to the comments that are more than that.

That's not the matter.

The thing is, you don't know the feel of giving away something bought with your money to someone who didn't even bother to spend 5 seconds typing a comment.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I would overthank him if I would get the game. I would add him to my friends in steam and show my appreciation especially to him, not just go constantly thanking in comments

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The people who say thanks in advance are doing exactly that. They're not thanking for winning the game, they're thanking for the chance to win the game.

Seriously, it looks like you're picking off straws here. What's wrong with some show of gratitude?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I get that. (read my first comment) It just feels insincere.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Some people are in fact insincere, namely the ones who use scripts/bots to post comments on giveaways.

But it's hardly fair to lump these guys together with people who are really thankful for the vague chance of winning a game.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not. that's why I always thought I shouldn't be like the others. I'm really grateful for every opportunity and I shall make it clear from now on.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

you do realize that many people don't want to be 'overthanked' over the chat because they have other matters to attend to? it's just easier to read the comments and then hand over the gift to the lucky one. i'm not saying speaking to the winner is a waste of time because i love it tbh, but many times people simply don't have time to do that.

1 decade ago
Permalink

i wrote a lot of 'thanks' and it didn't seem to stop me from giving games away, so... your 'logic' proved wrong.

1 decade ago

You obviously didn't understand my comment. I meant the ones who whine about people saying "thanks", not the ones who say "thanks" per se.

There's approximately one hundred billion threads dealing with this already. It gets tedious to talk this through over and over and over again. If you're really interested, I suggest you use the search function - it's nifty.

But.. posting the thread without searching is much more easier and doesn't take time.

It's not I want to know what people think, I wanted to discuss this, and just looking at old threads is hardly a dialog.
