We do it because we're a satanic cult. That's the initiation word.

Four real comments > 6,000 "thanks!" comments.
I used to type thanks every time, now I only write something occasionally, and only if it's something specific about the game, or if I'm making a joke. (I often say, "Show me potato salad!")

Cant i express my opinions without making a giveaway? I have been a member of the site for less than a month, I didnt see a thread on this topic before. I am just telling what I think. And yes, i think it is spam and is no way to show your gratitude for the person who makes the giveaway. You want to show your gratitude? Write something better than a short ty. AT LEAST check who makes the giveaway. Do you think %90 people know, even look who made the giveaway. They simply write "ty" because other did the same. They just follow the crowd, and they possibly think saying "thanks" is increasing chance of winning the giveaway. (i actually discussed this with some people and got this answer as i thought.) So go on and blame for not spamming with the crowd. It doesnt show that i am less grateful for the people who makes giveaways than you are.
And please, again dont miss the point i am trying to make here. I am not saying do not say "thank you". But all of those soulless quick "ty" spam kills the comment feature. I, for one want to discuss the giveaway and the game. And get info such as if its legit or not. I want to ask things to the person who makes to giveaway, i want to discuss it with him. And say thanks in my way instead of your meaningless TY spam.
Its my opinion. Deal with it.
Thanks.
Edit: Please excuse the grammar, I am too sleepy to edit.

"Thank you" button won't help to get rid of ty's invasion completely, but surely will reduce it's severity. I've been seeing for a lot of times how it works at various places with hundred times bigger user population. But please, nothing like "reputation" , "karma", additional points system based on this or "amount of thanks recieved by the user" in the profile. Simply amount of thankses for the current giveaway and that' enough.

I dont support the button system. saying thanks by button is equally same. (ofcourse it would help with spam) i think setting a min character limit more than few letters for giveaway comments would help. And encourage people to write more meaningful comments than a generic TY. So people can discuss anything they want in the giveaway without digging through the spam.

I am strongly against any "thanks" button or some shit

I usually say things like "thanks for the opportunity". Is that soulful enough for you?

Once a week, we get this thread. I'm going to just paste my replies from now on.
"Thanks for your thread. It's quite fine."

"I am simply pointing out that thanks and comments should be seperated, so there will be space to discuss the game and giveaway."
Weird how someone who has only 16 comments (5 of which are in this thread) is so concerned about the ability to discuss things on this website...

When I see over 300 comments in giveaway full of said tnx's, I lose my intention to say and ask anything, either great or simple. No one will notice anyway. I could even say "Hey, I got nude photo of Yatterman!" and it will be lost in a ocean of ty's and tnx's with no replies. I actualy do like to read and leave comments in a giveaways I enter and not, but the wall of tytyty makes it painful, hard and time wasting.

I also like to read actual comments, and opinions. And i am a member for less than a month now. Like I said I was just pointing out the issue, it would be nice to have a comment section where people actually comment.
I am not going to write same things all over again but i dont understand how you manage to miss the main point on every post you make. This is what I think, whether you agree or not. Anyway I do not wish to discuss this any further.

"it would be nice to have a comment section where people actually comment"
Comment - A remark expressing an opinion or reaction.
As in, someone just posted a giveaway for a game I want and my immediate reaction is to say 'Thank you very much!' Seems appropriate to me.
"i dont understand how you manage to miss the main point on every post you make"
It's probably a combination of you not communicating your point well enough and me not trying hard enough to decrypt your true intention beyond the impression that you think every giveaway comments section needs to meet your personal standards of what is worth saying and what isn't.

Well it is a tad silly to take the high ground and call someone else out for not being very understanding when you're doing the very same thing. When faced with that kind of lack of awareness I'm usually flabbergasted and at a loss for words. You'll have to excuse my lack of eloquence at that time. In other words, np ;)

Why, you may disagree all you want. I'm tired and sleepy now, so no sane answer this time. Lets call it even. I never hated anyone or anything, even auntomated tyty spammers; it's all just my opinions I love to share sometimes, despite them being liked or not. I hope I hurted no one (except for that guy with a few pinches of hair being self-ripped out).

The difference between a thanks button and typing "thanks" or "thx" is meaningless. To anyone who knows how to type, the difference in time spent is extremely negligible, both taking mere fractions of a single second. How many people actually mean to thank the creator of the giveaway? A fair number, yes, definitely, but I'd say the majority are just doing it out of obligation and because it's encouraged. In other words, a chore.
Want to kill two birds with one stone? Make comments be required to be a certain number of characters... maybe 30 or so? At the very least you might get some conversation or interesting words that way.

I agree with OP and thats why I usually only say thanks with a personal message on the giveaways I really like and are really good.
Otherwise, why not just add a 1+ thanks button and have comments reserved for all comment shenanigans

I still don't see how you people think NOTHING is better than even the spam "ty" or "thx"
You're basically saying that if someone gave away a game, lets say Skyrim for everyones favorite example, that between saying "thx", "ty", or "thanks" or something along those lines, is a worse situation then everyone saying nothing? Seriously? That's what you people think? That's pretty sad. So a 60 point giveaway in this example (could be higher or lower though) and you people are saying not a single comment on the giveaway is better than everyone saying "thanks" or "ty".
And honestly a thanks button just makes it worse. At least some people take the time to scroll down to the bottom of the page, click on the comment box, and type six fucking letters. I'm sorry you think it's too "spammy" and that you can't differentiate between "thanks" and "thanks, i really like this game!" (or "thanks! this is a great game!" or "thanks! i'll check out the link you supplied in the description", how you people can't differentiate spam "thanks" and a real comment baffles me.
At least we are all on the same page that a personalized message or some kind of actual comment is the best bet.

I want to see actual chatting/discussion in the comments. I don't like the discussion to be lost in a sea of "thanks"es.
Solution: Make entries display two chat threads: one for thanking, and one for discussing.

excerpt from the post you just hit reply to: "I'm sorry you think it's too "spammy" and that you can't differentiate between "thanks" and "thanks, i really like this game!" (or "thanks! this is a great game!" or "thanks! i'll check out the link you supplied in the description", how you people can't differentiate spam "thanks" and a real comment baffles me."
You remind me of those people who make trade threads in the forums and then claim they couldn't tell the difference between SteamTrades forums and SteamGifts forums, same design, but very VERY VERY easy to tell the difference between the two just at a quick glance. Same concept, if you can't scroll down one page of thanks in 5-10 seconds and can't differentiate between 'spam thanks' and comments then I'm sorry for you, maybe you should get glasses or contact lenses.

You don't actually think that will ever happen, do you? Awfully hyperbolic.

I've been seeing this thread bounced to the top of the forum all day, and I've been trying my best to ignore it. I have failed.
Why do people spam threads questioning/criticizing others' expressions of gratitude, sincere or not?
Point the first: There's nothing wrong with someone offering thanks for a giveaway. In fact, it's rather nice, sincere or not.
Point the second: Giveaway comment threads aren't a place for discussion in the first place. That's what the forums are for.
Point the third: Even if one wished to have a discussion within giveaway comment threads, the simple thanks are tiny and easy to ignore. I have things like a mouse wheel and a scroll bar which allow me to skim through and find any meaningful content whatsoever within literal seconds at the most with no problem whatsoever.
Point the fourth: A "Thank you" button is even worse in terms of sincerity and removes any meaning the act ever had in the first place. It might well be one of the most idiotic ideas I've ever heard.

Jesus fucking christ. 10/10, I mad.
Do you seriously fucking think that it is this terrible? Saying "Thank You" is a BAD thing or something in your mind? Is it hard to distinguish 'ty' from the other comments in a giveaway? Do you seriously look for some kind of meaning or discussion in your giveaway comments even though there is a BUTTON on the SITE that LINKS to a whole PLETHORA of pages upon pages of reading material and discussion by the users of the site, for the users of the site!? It is worse to otherwise say NOTHING because you put NO EFFORT WHATSOEVER in trying to show you have a speck of interest in the game this user spends his hard earned money on so you can have a chance to play this game free of charge.
Someone please make a sticky or something that says "Hey Assholes, Read This" with a list of things all users must agree to know before being granted access to this site. As for your problem of wanting to discuss the game in the comments (Of a GIVEAWAY), even though there is a GRAAAAND amount of sites you can go to to find videogame discussions - MAKE A THREAD ON /v/ OR SOMETHING.

I mean ok, it's very kind and all but they are not really "comments". Do they think writing "thx" or "ty" will raise their chance to win the giveaway? Is it encouraged by mods? To be honest I find it really annoying. But well, I am just an asshole.
editing because of amount of rage i got from comments: I am simply pointing out that thanks and comments should be seperated, so there will be space to discuss the game and giveaway.
Editing last time for people who misses the point. I am sorry if I was not clear enough:
