Hell Girls is released today and developer made a post about unconditional return policy saying:

If you’ve purchased my game but regret it some day, you can find me for an unconditional refund at any place and any time, and will not have to tell me the reason. The specific procedures are:

  1. Add me to your Steam friend list

  2. Send me the following information: the name, time and price of the game you’ve purchased, and your PAYPAL account.

PS. After getting the refund, you will not have to delete the game or the badges, cards, backgrounds and emoticons you’ve got. WHY? It’s because you’re the God here.

Note: He's also the developer of Super Star, whose also offered price difference refund when the game got price drop. I also made a thread about it in the past.

So, what do you guys think?

I don't know if he just outright lied as a publicity stunt and scam the idiots that purchase it only to ask for a refund to practically get a free +1 or he's actually THAT naive. Either way I don't see this going well...

I disagree. Who would actually "steal" such a game? And why bother with cheating that guy, by adding him and lying him "in the face" if you could easily get this or tons of similar games by pirating it?
Nah, even most of those people who might dislike the game won't bother for $1-2 and he wins by gaining some attention and good PR.

Call me a pessimist but I'd be REALLY curious to see his invites on steam within the next week that this will be picked up in forums and reddit. I really think there's gonna be an insane number of people(remember, there's millions on steam) that will ask him for a refund once they have the cards dropped(not only did they gain a free +1 but they made a few cents profit too).
Either way, unless he self-destructs with some kind of rant, it's great publicity for him.
Zero faith in humanity! \o/

Even if he refunds every game, he will still make a profit. He gets a percentage of every market transaction. So even at a minimum 1cent each for 3 cards at 1 million refunds. he would make $30,000.
This is why you see some devs give away 10,000 copies of a shit game.

Which can't be refunded because they were supplied in the form of keys and won't cost the developer payment processing fees.

But even if we igore payment processing fees he still has to pay Valves (30% ?) cut out of his own pocket.

I image in the SteamGifts Community alone there are hundreds of people that will try to exploit his generosity the moment they hear about this. I mean we (and Reddit) are pretty much the worst when it comes to stuff like that. Just look at how we banktrupted Games Republic.

What we did to GamesRepublic?

https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/jQafQ/games-republic-sid-meiers-civilization-vi-digital-deluxe-ended

Since they apparently edited out the original information when everybody was still wondering if those keys will get revoked:
They had a price glitch and sold Civ VI Digital Deluxe Edition for 17$ just 4 weeks after release.
They panicked and refunded everybody but apparently 2K didn't want to revoke those keys and insisted on payment by Games Republic.

And not even 2 weeks later they filed bancrupcy and announced that they will shut down the site at the end of January. Pure coincidence? I personally highly doubt it.

I've never realized this bug was on GamesRepublic. I am curious if it was really a major factor behind closing the store. I've even bought at their store a few times so I'm sad they had to shut it down, especially that I like to support complanies from my own country.

Well at least their developing branch (the shop was run by the same company that made This War of Mine & the Anomaly series) will probably survive since they are seperate entities.

You call it faith, I call it reason. And unless you have any news to share about the past 4 months, that we aren't aware of, it seems to have been justified?

i'm not the dev so I dont have any data, did he shared something afterwards? it would be interesting to see some actual data...

In such a case the rule "It's good news, when there are no bad news" applies. If masses would have abused his offer, as some feared, there'd be some signs of his misery by now.

Oh, I was just wondering yesterday how such a simple and... well cheap, game could have reviews like that. This explains a lot :)

Edit: Interesting to see that the price has doubled since then

If this is really true, the guy sounds very down-to-earth and chill... just worry that some people will try and take advantage of his position...

Guessing it's one of those situations where you get credit for being a good guy when chances are most people won't go through the trouble for ~$1. Also most people find out they don't like a game within the first hour or so, at which time they can just request an official refund from Steam.

So it's either a nice move or a good PR move. Either way, can't fault 'em for it. It also looks playable for the price.

Whether it's a PR stunt or it's just him being nice to his customers, it can backfire on him. There are people who will try to exploit this.
I do hope that people won't try to abuse his kindness.

Sadly I can see a lot of morons abusing him for being so awesome.....
It's cool offer , he did it for superstar aswell, but there are far to many ppl who see that as a way to get easy +1 for free

I'll buy 2 copies when I'm home 1 for me 1 for a gib.

Well, seems like they did it before with the game they released beforehand:

They seem to be genuine enough, there were no complaints yet as far as I could tell.

I'm guessing he just means the email address that the buyer's PayPal account is registered to so he has somewhere to send the money to.

He needs your paypal mail so he can send the money there .

There are people who already used the option to get back the difference betwen the release price and the current price of Super Star , the first game he offered that service for .

The guy is legit , props to him for doing that

If there's a Linux release I'll buy a copy, and a copy to giveaway.

I just hope that no giveaway winners from this game will abuse the policy and get the game for free + paid for it.

Overall looks like a great move by the dev. I could think of a couple of ways it could work in his favour (if he introduces trading cards, it's possible that he'll still end up with a profit even after refunding a certain amount of copies), but overall this looks like a good move by a decent developer.

He's a nice guy. I just hope a bunch of jag-offs don't take advantage of him to scam him for a couple bucks each. I bought Hell Girls because I LOVE Puzzle Quest and this looks just like it with boobs and extra tile abilities.

I'm hoping he'll reply to my Linux thread before the sale is over. If a Linux release is coming I'd happily buy multiple copies to give away here on SG.

Oh, it is a dragging style match-3 with casual RPG elements. I was actually looking for something like this for a while but I only found the traditional swapping kind on Steam.

Any recommendations for the swapping kind?

You cannot really go wrong with the Bejewelled or 7 Wonders games. I also liked Around the World in 80 Days, but it is not on Steam. The "Season" series is also supposedly good but I never tried it.
Also, HuniePop. If you discount the obvious ecchi content, it is a pretty good and extremely challenging match-3.
If you mean the "RPG"/Match-3 kind, then the PuzzleQuest games.

I have also been eying with this one, although I think I may skip it since it looks more Diablo-like, with Match-3 battle system: http://store.steampowered.com/app/464470/

that's a nice move. still - no thanks. i put my money in games i actually want to support. this is not really the kind of game i want to see more of on steam.

for instance, it makes me sad to see that so few of you are willing to invest money in good adventure games like Yesterday Origins and Silence. this is a struggling genre, and it seems people only buy those games if they are dirt cheap. how are they supposed to make more games like that, if people only want to pay <5$... sorry, i know i'm way off-topic here. still, as cool as this guy is - at the moment i'd rather safe the money for a Yesterday Origins giveaway instead of buying yet another match-3 game.

Well, I picked up a copy of Hell Girls and it's a pretty enjoyable take on the match-three genre.
Played it for almost 2 hours just now, and it's definitely worth the $1.19 I paid.
Add to that his ethics regarding his games (lowering Super Star's price and his refund policy), and this dev has my support.
