So, I guess many of us have said or done something dumb on the site that granted us a lot of blacklists.

I went form 5 blacklists to 46 in a couple of days some years ago. And, to be honest, I deserved every single one of those. I made a thread about ratio that, while inspired by something that happened, I tried to keep general but I ended up basically calling out on someone and, worst of all, for all the wrong reasons. So, yeah, thankfully I wasn't banned but I think I would have deserved that too. I was dumber then.

Anyway, I am curious about what have you done that made a bunch of users blacklist you and if you think you deserved them.

Have some stuff

Did you deserve your blacklists?

What kind of dumb thread is this?

Well, I probably deserve them from the point of view of the ones who blacklisted me. After all, why else they would blacklist me?
As for me - I usually don't know the reason, so I don't have any opinion about that. Sometimes I wish I knew the reason - I mean, what if I can change, get better, if only I knew, what needs to be changed. On the other hand - maybe I'll just consider it not reasonable, and ignore. Who knows.

This site in itself is a giant game. From a few of the things you described, when I read it back a few times, it just sounds like the person/people you describe are treating everything like a game. Interactions score points, winning means game over, things like that.

Somebody else said it best:

just existing is enough to get you blacklisted

and it's entirely true. That's also everybody's right. We're all not entitled to everybody else's things just because it's a site that promotes sharing.

I was blocked on steam, and blacklisted on here for typing fast. In somebody else's mind, there may be a plethora of good reasons (in their head, again) to blacklist. You'll scratch your head, and wonder why, but in the end it's not worth it.

Also in the words of somebody else...

just shut up and eat your hair!

Take care, comb your hair! Hope it's all worth the wear!

That song meant three instant blacklists. Spec Ops: The Line soundtrack. Game that touches perfection, in my opinion

My personal record is 3 almost instant blacklists for a comment describing my audio setup; that episode still remains an enigma to me. Maybe I actually deserved them in some strange way.
And that's just an example. How can I determine if my BLs are deserved or not if I'm usually at a loss about their reasons?

I am not really sure, I'm rather vocal about my beliefs and I have very strong opinions on certain issues, some of which might be considered unpopular, and I don't shy away from expressing it, this is bound to earn me some blacklists, that's okay, it's their loss (or not).

The rest are what I suppose (one can only guess) to be retaliatory blacklists, which is totally understandable, I'd do the same, reciprocity is a sound principle in life.

As for possible reasons for BL other users :

  • Uncalled for rudeness/insults and disruptive behavior on the forums,
  • Users who don't bother to say "thank you" after winning games from me or other users, quite possibly 75 % of the 231 users on my blacklist, from my experience, the lower their level is and the less likely they're to thank or acknowledge the GA creator(s).
  • The worst of leechers (terrible ratios) and /rule breakers.

i thought this thread was dumb until i got my first blacklist yesterday, in 3 years of using this site for wining a giveaway?!?!?

It's not uncommon to get a blacklist if you win a giveaway without thanking the giveaway creator, so that would be my guess in your case.

Select stats at bottom and scroll down (edit : you're welcome !)

To answer too, i got blacklists when :

  • i wanted to answer all nice comments, but i just understood much later that it was annoying for people because de facto it constantly bumped my thread, so now i just write some rare answers and instead silently whitelist some nice people
  • i announced i wanted to definitely clean my blacklist (and since then i've been trying to stick to it), but i understood much later again that it could be seen as bragging... while in fact it's maybe worst because it just wanted to try to do an effort here to scare away bad luck in real life, yes it's superstition i know... but it costs nothing to try !

Deserved ? Probably, who i am to judge.

I have some blacklists but don't see any particular time they happened. They're just responses to some comments I posted. Blacklisting / whitelisting is SG's equivalent of liking / disliking on other sites. As for being deserved, in my experience that's not the case here nor on other sites. Reddit is a good example, where I tend to get more likes if I post something people agree than something thoughtful or informative. Same goes for dislikes, which has little to do with how valuable or thoughtful the post is, just how many people take offence to it.

I absolutely deserved my blacklists .

Worked hard by blacklist baiting and shit posting to get them.

They were well earned from all of my hard work.

Yeah it really is hard work to get them. I've really done my best to get lots but nothing seems to work so grats to you if you have succeeded. Maybe I should start doing something really evil like community trains.

You mock me, but the community train did in fact get me more blacklists.

So the joke is on you.

I wasn't mocking you, but those people who blacklist for something like that, since I knew you did.

Did you miss all my attempts to shitpost if you think I wasn't serious? :)

Haha! If only blacklisting really did mean that we didn't have to read certain drivel on the forums. XD

(Not that I blacklist people I disagree with, I certainly don't as I don't see the point in being that petty lol... I leave them to do the blacklisting. It's more fun that way. lol)

IKR. Blacklisting could possibly hide comments from users as well, that'd be a nice feature.

people hated on me for creating a ramadan thread where i tried to spread some positivity. Probably some islamophobes who hate muslims? Most People hate everyone who is not like them. It is an instinct i guess to protect yourself from the unknown.
