Diablo 3 doesn't really have builds in the classical sense, since you can easily change your skills around and there are no ability points to distribute. Just experiment and use what you like best, because even if you make a "wrong" choice you can just change it.

If you're playing on HC, start stocking up on high-Vitality gear after around level 20. Before that, I tend to focus on XP just to level a little faster (personal taste), and also keep upping your Damage Per Second since most of the stats aside from DPS don't matter much at the lower levels. After level 20, to repeat: Vit!, and whatever the primary attribute for the char is (Dex for Monk/DH, Str for Barb, Int for Wiz/WD). Beyond that... there's lots of ways to go about it. Experiment, and have fun (and make sure to turn on Elective Mode in the game options). And if you're playing hardcore, don't die! :D
