Need some info on the keyboards gamers use and for what type of games. If you can tell me what key switch type goes with your keyboard, the better.

I just recently bought a new membrane keyboard (R8 Illuminated) for a very cheap price after retiring my 11-year old keyboard. But when looking at the mechanical type reviews on the net, I do really like to try a good mechanical keyboard. Though in the Philippines, its hard to find shops to buy some famous brands.

So here I am asking for tips from the SG community for what keyboard am I going to buy. Have around 8-10k PhP (around 170-210 USD) for my budget. I usually play Dota 2, CS:GO, and Left 4 Dead 2. I also have some SP games that are RPG, FPS, and RTS.

Also, here is the SGTools protected train (lvl 2). You already know what's gonna happen if you entry is invalid.
If you can notice a style on how I create my GA trains, I'll put you in my WL (1 user only)
1st Hint: Not with the GA genres, but on the manner on how I create them
2nd Hint: Don't mind the GA names
3rd Hint: These are my previous trains. Don't mind the descriptions though. 1st, 2nd, and lastly, the 3rd.

And the winner is: malabagaa

Each GA ends 1 minute after its predecessor =P

Another thing, give me an awesome synonym or replacement word for bump, you will be added in my WL, too.

Update: from conducting research on gaming websites and from the discussion here in SG, I have concluded that the keyboards that are good for purchase are [1st] Poseidon-Z (which is a budget mech keyboard but a great one) and [2nd] Logitech G810 (awesome board at a much higher price but the specs are awesome).

2nd Update: GA by the legend Yirg!

I have the G.Skill KM780 RGB. I don't recommend it. I bought it because of the features (USB passthrough, Audio passthrough, media controls, wrist wrest, 6 ft cable, Macro keys), but the software is crazy buggy and the keyboard makes an audible buzzing sound when the RGB lighting is active. Loud buzzing also emits from any speaker or headphone connected to the audio out jack on the keyboard.

I recommend Corsair or Das Keyboard.

Can't say that I need some USB passthrough on a keyboard that much since my CPU case is on top of my desk so peripherals are easy to connect. I looked up the DAS keyboard and it's good. Pricey though

Just wondering, is that necessary ?

I mean, probably a mechanical keyboard is better than a random 10/20€ keyboard,
but... is better enough to justify the price difference ? (~ +1000%)

I had a job just February this year and been having some savings. I would really like to try a mech keyboard because of its performance. Usually, mech keyboards can last very long too, maybe 5 years or so, which means I'm still getting what I paid for even with 1000% price difference

I recently tried one on an internet cafe but its really clicky. Having trouble using it the 1st time and on the Dota 2 game. I thought then that mech keys have that feel, but when I researched them, there are other key switches even with the same keyboard.

I'm using keyboard bought in 1992, rubber dome afaik. Haven't found anything even remotely comfortable. But it was selected from the batch of over 20 by hand-testing. And this is what you should do too: test it yourself. Keyboard, mices and displays are like shoes. If they don't fit, everything else is irrelevant )

Does that mean that you're still using the same keyboard ever since? I can say that old keyboards were made too durable even if they have rubber dome or membrane switch. I had this keyboard ever since my 1st PC for 11 years and used it on Dota 2, CS:GO, GTA III-V, KOA:Reckoning, Ragnarok, countless early 1990-2005s games (I'm using my 3rd PC). But recently, its ghosting feature even with 3 keys had disappeared. Example is when I'm playing CS:GO or L4D2, when I'm using the "W" to move forward and using "Q" to switch weapons doesn't work anymore. Also, "left shift + tab" and "left shift + T" does not work anymore. Other combinations and single presses look fine. Of course fixing it would be useless, and that's why I bought the R8 Illuminated.

Exactly that. And since I type a lot everyday, I won't change it to anything less comfortable. I really, really do hope it won't die anytime soon, because I can see countless months of buying and returning after testing before I find something with good fit (and will order 2 more, just in case). What switches, leds, backlights and all that junk it has, doesn't matter a bit (and in current times, you can't belive in any specs declared on mass market goods)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The accessories like macro, backlights, etc are not the ones I'm really after. I'm after the feel and reliability when it comes to playing games. May I ask what games do you use your old keyboard for?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Now? Strategy and RPGs (of Witcher kind) mostly, sometimes "softcore" FPS (single players). But it had been used for platformers and the like in past times quite a lot.
Don't get me wrong, I do not recommed you getting rubber domes and the likes. All I've seen in new keyboards were utter crap. What I do recommend tho is first looking for the comfortable ones (only you can say if it "fits" ) and only ask which is better later, when you can't decide between two or more

If you want quality, go Ducky. Simple looks, no useless keys, a lot of different switches to choose from. Sure, they are quite expensive, but for a reason. Still rockin' my Shine 2 with Cherry MX Brown -switches, white leds. Extremely satisfied.

Actually looking for simple designs. Logitech G810 (because of romer-Gs) and Corsair K70 (RGB not really needed) are the top candidates for me right now.

The brand is more or less inconsequential, since good-quality mechanical keyboards in reality are the exact same: all of them use the exact same keys made by Cherry. So the only question is usually the button layout (for example, it seems to be nearly impossible to find a mechanical nowadays with a real Enter button, a full two-row one), wrist rest shape (or even existence of), and if you need them, how many USD/audio jack slots it has (although those have a point only if your PC is far away/doesn't have USB slots left in the front).

Since with things like Razer and Steelseries, literally half of the money is spent on buying a brand name (because, as I said, all of them are actually the same keyboard), your real question is to choose what kind of Cherry MX buttons do you need? YOu can use these to choose:
http://www.keyboardco.com/blog/index.php/2012/12/an-introduction-to-cherry-mx-mechanical-switches/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Qtr6D2TWBE

Once you choose the switch type, all you need to do is lok for any mechanical keyboard that has these and has the layout/features you are comfortable with. As long as they use these switches, their quality will be the same, regardless of brand.
An advice: be careful though. Black switches are considered "hard" and I had people not believing it. They are great for games, but if you type on it, a post like this one would be enough to make your fingers hurt from the force required to press these many keys this many times. On the other hand, some people find Red/Brown so light that they press several buttons accidentally without realising it (especially on Red, which gives zero feedback on button press). If you can find an actual store that sells mechanicals, try to try those before buying/ordering one.

I don't agree fully (as usual). In no-name keyboard you have much higher chance of low quality of other components used and general engeneering and worksmanship. It won't matter much if it has Cherries when pcb breaks because they skimped on supports )

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No-name keyboards won't exactly use Cherry buttons. But why spend 70-100 dollars for a mechanical keyboard if it has a good brand name if the same keyboard could be bought for 50 without the fancy logo?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yep, most likely Cherryl buttons or something like that :)

If one can get exactly the same thing (and wants it even at branded price) for half price it's a no-brainer. But usually it's not the case - premium for a label is not that high, so some "shortcuts" were taken during the design. It might be thinner plastic for the casing, cheap capacitors, etc. All reducing longevity of the keyboard so that you pay half price but buy thrice as often :)

Yeah but Cherry switches are not the only ones used for gaming. I've seen razer-exclusive and logitech romer-G keys. Downside is there are no stores yet that I've found that sells mechanical keyboards where I can try different key switches. I live in a 3rd world country, and most PC building shops here are selling low to mid-tech parts.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True, they are not, but there is a reason they are used for over three decades now continuously. You may try to experiment with the different high-price one, but since Cherry-based keyboards are the most widespread, they have the best chance for you to find them in your country or at a seller that ships them there for a reasonable fee.

I don't really know much about keyboards so I can't give you any technical info about why it's better or which switches are the best for which games etc, I'll only talk about my experience with the 2 Logitech keyboards I'm currently using.

My main setup has mechanical Logitech G710+. I think it uses Cherry MX Brown switches. I can only tell you that I'm simply in love with this keyboard. It was expensive as hell but it's the best keyboard I've used in my life. Keys are extremely sensitive; typing and gaming on that keyboard are very smooth.

The secondary setup I'm using while I'm away from my main setup for 4 months every year has a budget option from the same company: Logitech G103, this isn't mechanical. I'm currently typing this message from G103 and I already took half of the typing time only to edit the constant mistakes because buttons get stuck quite frequently after only one month of use. All buttons too; D, M, Space, A you name it. It takes considerable amount of power to make the commands register in the game or while typing a simple message.

L G710 looks good. Brown switches with tactile feedback. I think this was the one I tried on the internet cafe when I played Dota 2. Hard to double tap fast when using a skill. Did you actually want to try another brand of keyboard just for curiosity, or the G710 with brown is already very satisfactory?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I played a lot of competitive Starcraft 2 and some Heroes of the Storm on that keyboard, I can't recall ever having problems with fast double tapping. I don't know how things are in Dota 2, though.

As for your second question, I initially wanted to try a Razer Blackwidow keyboard but it was even more expensive than the 710+ and after reading tons of reviews I decided on Logitech 710+. Maybe when I have stable income (which is doubtful) I might upgrade it to 910 in the future but I'm also quite happy with my current one.

Maybe I had problems because it was the first time I had ever used a mech kb. I really switched to another PC after the 1st game I tried it with that. Maybe with time, I'm actually gonna know how to press mech key switches efficiently. Razer KBs are really pricey as goes with most if not all of their gaming equipment. The G910 is kinda good to try but I'm really looking for the best feel and performance when it comes to games. Macro keys, RGB lighting are not really important at the moment.

Yes, oldies are good. But sometimes its hard to play with if you do Competitive Multiplayer games. I don't really see any disadvantages when using no-name keyboards for SP games since you can just save & load.
