Hello all, my new graphics card just arrived, so I want to see what it can do. So please suggest games that have the best graphics but are also fun to play.

Games I already have that have been suggested:

Batman Arkham City
Crysis (Need to install photorealistic mod)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Bought Saturday)
Dirt 3
GTA4 (Need to install Ice Enhancer)
Just Cause 2 (Bought Friday)
Saint's Row: The Third (Bought Saturday)
Serious Sam 3: BFE
Warhammer 40k: Space Marine (Bought Saturday)
Witcher 2 (Bought Saturday)

Games I will buy next paycheck (Monday) and try out:

Crysis 2 (most likely)

Games to pickup in the future or on sale:

Battlefield 3
Hard Reset
Metro 2033
Singularity
Supreme Commander Forged Alliance
Witcher

Any of these that are steam games I will take screenshots of and you can view them here.

I am surprised only 1 person found the Just Cause 2 giveaway, if you clicked the apostrophe in the following comment it brought you right to the giveaway:

"Just bought that last night actually (it's on sale for $3.49 on GamersGate)."

Serious Sam 3 BFE on max settings is pretty intense, same can be said for Deus Ex: HR.
Trine 2 is not graphics intensive, but it's freaking beautiful, and would be awesome with a powerful Graphics Card.
The obvious suggestion of course is Crysis.

Will have to try that as I just got a friend into Serious Sam 3 the other day :D

EDIT: How is Deus Ex: HR? I noticed it's on sale for $7.49 on Gamers Gate and am thinking of picking it up.

Its REALLY good, I pirated it & It was really fun.
It doesnt have much replay value though... Theres a million ways to do 1 thing instead of 1 way of doing a million.

First playthrough: You sneak past the guards. Second playthrough: You kill the guards.
It was really fun to play regardless ^^

I still believe in the fact that most games require a CPU more than a GPU ;)

At least converting to a 19.2 GhZ (six cores each at 3.2) did the trick - I can now play any 2012 game at full graphics (except motion blur. That shit is scary) while I haven't changed my video card since 2008 (it's a 1GB nVidia GeForce 9600 GT).

And it makes sense, doesn't it? Now that we've achieved photorealistic graphics - more or less - we need physics and the emulation of particles which rely on some heavy calculations - ergo, the need for a CPU more than a GPU.

Plus it works outside games; I tried copy-pasting about 8000 words into Excel - there were about 4000 hyperlinks to create and just as much images to include (they were very, very small though). The "old" quad-core 2.3GhZ CPU never managed to do it, whereas this one did it in 2 minutes or even less.

Anyway, most games using the Unreal Engine I think are good stress-testers for your card.

CPU certainly helps, But it isnt everything...
I do agree with you thought that it helps. Upgrading from a 9800 GT to a GTX 560 Ti had big improvements, And after upgrading from a Q6600 Quad Core to an i5 I had bigger improvements!
In a game like Battlefield 3 you will need more GPU power than CPU. In Skyrim its more CPU than GPU IIRC.

What games are you playing at full graphics? I dont think youre able to run Crysis & Stuff on full with acceptable FPS
Maybe youre one of those guys that doesnt notice bad FPS like my brother, Hes running his game at 20 FPS & He doesnt mind.

Me on the other hand, I can notice a drop from 70 to 50 FPS really well, I usually see flickering on some (older) screens that other people dont notice... Its like my eyes are "faster" in some way :P
I cant run newer games at full "smoothly" (For me atleast) even with my i5 2500k, GTX 560 Ti & 8GB RAM combo.

I usually just decrease Shadows, DoF (I hate it anyways) & Motion blur (I hate that too), SSAO & Those thigs you wont notice at all...
Believe me, If youre lagging on a game NEVER turn Textures down, NEVER turn Resolution down. If you have to, You need to upgrade.
Always take out DoF, Reduce Shadows, God Rays, Motion Blur, Etc. Those things you seriously wont notice, Atleast I dont.

Disabling the "useless" stuff generally helps me run games faster. I never use Motion Blur (if you pay close attention when you move your head around, there's only a very faint blur - nothing like what the games would have you believe). I had to uninstall Alan Wake after I couldn't disable the Motion Blur (not that I looked too deep for a way of disabling it). In a third person game. Seriously.
HDR is also completely backwards. It makes the game darker I recall when it should make it brighter (that's how it works in cameras) and in a shooter you're left with not seeing the enemies because there's a glare or something (if you enable the solar glare). But you can bet your AI enemies don't have HDR or glare enabled.

Anyway, so far in my 2012 games list I've tried Skyrim with the HQ DLC and mods (still isn't that great mind you), Chronicles of Riddick Assault on Dark Athena (which gave me a nice FPS drop that was, I recall, because of a setting that wouldn't change no matter what I tried) and pretty much any Source and Unreal Engine game (incidentally CoRAoDA is uglier than its predecessor, Escape From Butcher Bay... gotta love Unreal Engine lol). I'm not taken into triple A games too much haha.

I've always had the biggest challenge from racing or flying games like Grid, GTR2, X-Plane, F1 2011, NASCAR 03
of course, it makes 0 sense to buy one just to give your graphics card a workout if you're not into 'em

1 decade ago

Oh I am a fan of racing games ever since Need for Speed: Special Edition (1995) on pc and Gran Turismo 1 on PSX :)

That reminds me, have to see how Dirt 3 runs on this as it looks beautiful on my laptop even.

Was never a fan of flying games however, so will pass on those.

They might have played the original release. About a year after release it got almost everything fixed in a big patch. You can get it DRM-free from GOG.com for $4.99 right now (includes a bit of digital extras as well).
The only thing that might be off-putting at first is the combat system. It is point-and-click (you have free control of the mouse pointer and clicks in the enemy you want to fight). It is not bad at all, just takes a bit to getting used to.
Also see my above post on Witcher 2.

Through Ebay using Bill Me Later for the 6 month 0% interest financing.
You may have to watch the bids for a while as most are highly overpriced, but was able to get mine only $20 above retail which made it $569.

I'm liking the new card! My GTX 460 1GB still keeps gaming away :)

Try using Furmark to test out how hot your card gets (and watch a doughnut like thing moving around...).

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thanks for the link to Furmark, these are my results with the 1080p preset benchmark.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Both AMD and nVidia regard Furmark as a thermal virus and have had code in their drivers set to detect the application and throttle the graphics card and in nVidia's case disable some of the SP's.

That's largely killed any value it ever had, it was never relevant as a benchmark though. It's value was as a stress test for overclocking.

Call of duty is stupid, After the first modern warfare and WaW the games have become the same thing but with little differences here and there. mw3 and mw2 have the same graphics, same engine and basically same crappy game play. Plus its mainly little kids who scream into their mics when they die and most people dont want to hear that. (and no i am not a bf3 fan boy)
