Hi guys! I have a really old laptop at the moment (my new motherboard died two weeks after in my desktop PC), but I would like to play games on Steam. Could you recommend good games what is worth for playing with? I love indie or strategy games but not the pixel ones. I played and enjoyed on my laptop these games already: Legend of Grimrock, SteamWorld Dig 1-2, Age of Empires 2, Helltaker (for now).
My laptop specs:

  • Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz T8300
  • 4GB DDR2 RAM
  • NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M 128MB (15.6" 1280x800)
  • Windows 10 64bit OS

I am grateful for any suggestions! Have a nice day for everyone! :)

Comes to mind: Terraria, RimWorld, FTL: Faster than Light, Starbound... These were the ones I used to play on a i3-5005u not long ago and they were just fine. I had great fun years ago playing Elder Scrolls:Oblivion on a 8600mGT video card on a laptop. Just look at the games you like and google for 'system requirements'

Yep that site works wonderfully :)
Personally I prefer games with a good story, concept and well executed than the newest ray-tracing DLSS 400fps AAA title which you're gonna play for 2 hours and uninstall.

Yes you are right! I much more prefer the games with a good content and single campaign missions too. I would play the remastered Warcraft 2, that was one of my favourite back in the days. The other one what I would play again in new skin is the Eye of the Beholder AGA. :)

Hmmm...I didn't even think about that game, and it's still run on a 15 years old laptop. Nice found!

Mount & Blade: Warband - can be picked up dirt cheap and it would run on a potato. Only thing to worry about is battle size but you can decrease it if needed.

Banished also runs well on weaker laptops if you don't build large towns. I prefer small maps and never had any problems on those.

(I mainly play on an entry level PC put together in 2011 and on written off office laptops but yours seem to be even older.)

Relaxing puzzle games: Quell series (especially Zen), Strata, Kami
Point and click: games made by LucasArts (there are a couple of recently remastered ones), Daedelic (Journey of a Roach is a must and it's a steal with the 90% discount right now!)

I like puzzle games, but it depends of my mental condition. Sometime I can get into it sometime cannot. At the moment I more like the adventure games with good story line.

Also Fallout 1 and 2, Fallout Tactics, Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate (I think it´s only on GOG), Planescape: Torment and Baldur´s Gate 2 (at least the original releases, not sure if you could run the remasters), Wizardry 8, Arcanum: of steamworks and magik obscura, probably Silent Storm, of course X-Com: UFO defence (aka Enemy Unknown), Terror from the deep, X-Com: Apocalypse, Heroes of Might & Magic 3.

GemCraft - Chasing Shadows
IMO the best TD game.
Your laptop won't have any problem running for casual play. But you may encounter low FPS after you beat the main story (higher difficulty with lots of monsters on the screen), because it's using crappy flash as game engine. It runs fine using i5 8250U but I really doubt T8300 can handle late end game. I've got a really old laptop with T6670 used to play GemCraft Labyrinth, now running ubuntu as a headless pt client.

Batman: Arkham Asylum
Batman: Arkham City
Slay The Spire
Monster Train
HUNTDOWN
CrossCode HIDDEN GEM
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat I only recommend this stalker game bc this is the only one works without issues. The other 2 stalker games are great too but they just don't work.

Have you ever tried Battle for Wesnoth? It's a turn-based strategy game. And it's free and open-source!
It features many beautiful and challenging single-player campaigns, local and online multiplayer, downloadable user-made units and factions, scenarios and even full campaigns. You can download it from Steam, or as an installer from their site.

Don't know whether you played them back then but both Imperium Galacticas are on Steam, too. Sadly the first one is English only and doesn't have the original Hungarian cinematics.

Alrighty, np:) I see low spec and my mind shoots straight to KOTOR sorry

I'll give you some more low spec indie recommendations:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/368370/Her_Story/ you watch videos of interviews trying to piece together a story by searching for keywords you hear
https://store.steampowered.com/app/48000/LIMBO/ atmospheric platforming game with very light puzzle elements
https://store.steampowered.com/app/221260/Little_Inferno/ you burn stuff, it might be fun
https://store.steampowered.com/app/287980/Mini_Metro/ creating and upkeeping metro lines
https://store.steampowered.com/app/239030/Papers_Please/ while I know you specifically mentioned no pixelated graphics, this one is a treat in its unique gameplay and story

The upcoming Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX is a really good choice if you want to play one of the best old games for PSX.
Since its a port of a PSX game it will surely run in a low-spec system.

I really don´t know if Remedy gave info about this move, can´t remember reading a thread about It here. Rockstar has been doing wrong moves lately, at least they gave buyers the original GTA games with all the backlash. I´ve never thought Remedy would sold their beloved May Payne tho. You were lucky. I hope It comes back, but It´s probably gonna cost more, another "definitive edition".

That's weird! I could buy Max Payne 1 itself or I can buy Max Payne 2 in bundle (1-2) or Max Payne Complete Pack (1-2-3) or only Max Payne 3 in Hungary.

From the game you already have :
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition : Great 2D Plateform, playable in coop
Titan Quest Anniversary Edition must be playable with you're config, really good hack'n'slash
Psychonauts and Mini Ninja are good 3D Plateform game imo.

For personal suggestion, will say Ballistic NG, 100 % worth it if you like futurist racing game, or you like the franchise Wipeout
For the price asked (less than 8$), there a lot of content in the game (more than 100 tracks in the base game with free mods)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, this is my plan too. Get the games what already have in my library.

I found these too:
Beholder
Divide by Sheep
Hook
Street Racing Syndicate

Titan Quest Anniversary Edition sounds good, but it's big a little bit (6GB).
I've got only a 128GB SSD and this game is the biggest (after Borderlands 2 28GB) Thanks for the reminder anyway, this one comes next if I get bored of the rest of the games! :o)

Ballistic NG...hmm, will take a look! I see it has got full controller support! I didn't mention, but I prefer the games with controller because I hate to play on my laptop's keyboard. Ofc I can connect to my PC keyboard if it is necessary.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Divide by Sheep and Hook are pure reflexion game + don't have controller support, so i don't know if there you're type of game (that isn't my case)
Don't try Beholder and Street so can't help you with them.
P.S : Also Ballistic NG is one of the rare game on steam to be DRM Free, that mean that once you bought it and download it, you can launch it even without opening steam.

With that Laptop the best you can do is play Indie, Old, Emulated games.
That NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M 128MB is weaker than my first GPU back in '2007' Nvidia 8600 gt 256MB.
If I were you i'll try to fix ASAP the gaming PC.

Can't ever go wrong with Terraria for hours and hours of fun.

Tales of Maj'Eyal is an amazing roguelike (there is the paid steam version and free version at https://te4.org )

Stronghold 1,2, Crusader 1 and 2, Stronghold Legends if you like RTS / Castle and Kingdom sims

Kingdoms and Castles

Lego games are always fun as well and most of them are low spec.

I was thinking about Terraria as well, I tried it long time ago then something came out and I jumped on it instead on Terraria.
Stronghold Crusader what I never tried, but I heard a lot. I may try it then! Thanks
