I'm looking for some really scary games for Halloween. I've narrowed it down to the following, but I don't have enough for all. Any advise on which to get?

  • F.E.A.R. Collection

  • Outlast

  • Penumbra Collection

  • Amnesia: The Dark Descent

  • Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs

  • Silent Hill: Homecoming

  • Condemned: Criminal Origins

Also, my favorite game of all time is Alan Wake, if that makes a difference.

Bad Rats. Not the scariest game on steam but I don't think SotMC is on sale.

Outlast is pretty scary. So are both Amnesias. Hard choice.

Aslong you play Outlast on mute sound it is. The music just breaks the surprise, you know when the monster is close: the song starts.

Amnesia The Dark Descent if you prefer feeling dread and helplessness...I beat the game and I've got no clue what the monsters look like.

Outlast if you're more into gore and occasional jump scares.

The hissing sound of the licker as it drops to the floor and chases after you.

Outlast, Condemned and Amnesia: The Dark Descent are the most scary ones.

Outlast, no competition. First game that truly made me scared. It has many jump scares, large amounts of gore, and an extremely creepy atmosphere.

Meh, FEAR is not available in my region and I don't have enough funds on my account to have someone buy it for me as a gift. Guess I'll wait until winter sale then.

Cry of Fear (it's FREE), Huntsman: The Orphanage or Slender: The Arrival.

Prepare your heart.

Amnesia: A Dark Descent, Outlast (or so I've heard), and the Penumbra Collection I'd say. Condemned is a great 4th choice but I don't really know how scary it is (I heard towards the end of the game it's pretty scary). F.E.A.R. is decent, but its scares are pretty much all jumpscares. In fact.....I'd say it's one of the first games to blatantly use a large number of jumpscares. Kinda makes me sad.... :/

Alright, I looked up the system requirements for Outlast, but it seems I'm far from maxing the game out. I have an i7-Q740 1.73 GHz, Nvidia Quadro Fx 2800m, and 4 gig of ram. Is the game still worth buying in my case?

You could play it on low/medium, it wouldn't look as good, but if you ignored that it would probably still be good to get. :)

My only suggestion: Ignore Amnesia - A Sausage for Breakfast as it is infinitely worse than the first (the developer was "The Chinese Room" a.k.a. the people who made the non-game, dear ester)

Cry of fear. (FREE, and also has a co-op campaign for 4 players)

Get the first F.E.A.R but skip the rest. Outlast relies on jump scares and gore, not very scary if you ask me. Penumbra is very scary and has a far more interesting story and better puzzles than the Amnesia series. The controls however are really clunky and the A.I. is even worse, I'd still recommend picking it up. The Dark Descent and Condemned are absolutely worth your money, wait for a 75% off for AMfP and skip the atrocious Homecoming.
