I personally wished the technical aspect from 2 were in 1. But I also enjoyed 2's PVP and such. :D

I've heard good praise of the GBA version. On what system did you play the game on?

The PS2 version, I remember liking the trailer, but the game itself was Ok, not as bad as I thought it would be, though I do not think I would enjoy it as much nowadays!

Get the cheap one so yyou can measure the level of frustration you can take. If you can handle 1, then you graduate to DS2

DS1 , the lore is much better , the world and the level design is just wow , the difficulty is also perfect , even the weakest enemy can kill you and you get rewarded for doing risky stuff (you can get a 240 dmg weapon in like 5 minutes after ariving in Firelink Shrine) ,the OST is just amazing and the concept of the bosses is more original where as in DS2 everything is some sort of a knight with some exceptions .

I agree. (Are you talking about the Drake Sword? At the beginning?)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No , I was talking about the Gravelord Sword . It starts at 265dmg and you can upgrade it to +2 really quick if you want to kill the Prowling Demons in Catacombs and the one by the forest , doing so gets it at 318dmg .

2 Is better as a whole game. But I've gotta say, I loved the level design in Dark Souls 1. The way most levels were interconnected was so awesome.

Dark Souls 2. PvP is what keeps me in the game and in DS2 you get more action, the game runs better and backstabs and parrying are done better.

DS1 is the game for PvE. The world is much more interesting and DS1 has a lot more replayability in my opinion.

I'd say DS2 is the better optimized/balanced game and thus more enjoyable. It's also easier and the PVP is fun.

Yes, I'm enjoying DS2 far more just because of the 60 fps :0.

There's community mods enabling 60fps for DS1 though.

Yes, but it enables bugs. Because the engine was made to run at 30 fps. For instance, you can't jump as high and when you slide down ladders there's a chance you can fall through the floor.

This boss can be a pain of first playthrough he killed me lots of times too, you need to use shield right when entering, then heading towards the stairs and trying to kill dogs, then when you up stairs, jump off to the left, and wait for Capra to jump too, attack him, and defend and repeat. He even killed me on my second playthough, well we got tie, we killed each other, sadly to him I respawn.

For a mage it can be a little difficult on your first hours of game, but ppl say playing as mage makes game too easy because he is ranged, same as Cleric, besides that boss maybe xd, that boss is like practically full melee, I'm playing with Pyromancer and I use Light Armor, I hated using Heavy Armor because of the weight, even if it gives a way more protection, I played that game a lot and I don't find bosses hard anymore, but some areas are still very annoying like Sen's Fortress. Just watch on Youtube how to kill bosses if you have problems.

Generally I didn't feel like Dark Souls had very hard bosses, even some mini bosses and zones are away harder than bosses, which I think are the hardest thing on the game, most hard boss I spent like 40min trying to kill and constantly dying is Artorias of the Abyss from DLC, and to second place Dragon Slayer Ornstein and Executioner Smough, I even killed last boss from DLC at first try, most of the boss fights were easy. Played other games were boss fights were truly a pain.

But gonna play Dark Souls 2 SotFS as Mage, because I like to try some ranged class, since Pyromancer is not really range class, also any class can learn Pyromancy spells, you just need money, not even skills to upgrade Pyromancy Flame and damage only goes up by upgrading it with money, and being Pyromancer gives 0 advantage to the actual Pyromancy spells damage, that's why this class is removed in second game, and it's very recommend for heavy armor classes to use Pyromancy.

Still did not played DS2, but DS1 was really great 120h+, still practically never touched PVP. And these games should be played with controller, specially first , even if it has keyboard+mouse fix, also it has resolution and fps fix, last one you should installed even if you are going to use controller.

Although DS1 is a better designed game I still voted for DS2 but only because of the new DLCs areas. I'd even go as far as to say that (crown areas) could be my best experience in Dark Souls franchise.

I recently bought and played Dark Souls for the first time. Is it really that hard? I mean I beat the Taurus Deamon (on 2-nd attempt), Kapra Deamon (3-rd attempt), Two Gargoyles (1-st attempt), Gasping Dragon (3-rd attempt), some rock dude with big club looking like some weird huge dildo (I lost count), red fire breathing dragoon on the bridge (5-th or 6-th attempt) and now I went into some weird place with lots and lots of scaffolding and instant death falls. My progress is slow, I had to do some grinding, and think a lot about character progression (right now it is pyromancer, with level 11 flame, dark leather armor, shoes and gloves - upgraded to between +3 and +5, and bastard sword +10, some big shield with about 70 stability - I have no idea if this is a good build, but it works for me now) but it doesn't seen very hard for me. Yes my death count is double digit number (lost track after 20)

And don't hate me if I mistaken some enemy names or forgotten how something is called. It is my first playthru and I still make a lot of mistakes (like rolling away from enemy club, into the bottomless pit)

The game was nerfed since it's original release. Most of the bosses are quite easy on the first run. (Ornstein & Smough can still be quite a pain in the @ss, that's where most players give up) But on New Game+ and New Game++ there can be quite some challenges.

Also an advice: before you challenge the last boss make sure to go back and do everything you wanted because after defeating him New Game+ starts automatically.

Dark Souls 1. The NPCs were more interesting and colorful. In Dark Souls 2 everyone looks depressed and many bosses feel like reskins of the first game. This is because Hidetaka Miyazaki couldn't accept the director position. But he couldn't accept because he was managing Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, so we have that, which is nice :D

Dark Souls 2 is a lazy rehash of the first game, lacking in all those areas the first game excelled. It lacked the atmosphere and magic of the first game, that sense of awe and wonder of being a gnat surviving amongst the ruins of epic legends long past. The gameplay didn't push any boundaries, the level design was far less interesting, the story was... not inspired. They never nailed the balance, the soul memory system can fuck itself, the PC port was still shit (the durability bug still remains in SotFS and you need to hack the mouse controls just to get them to work) and it looks worse than the first game.

All that said, a lazy rehash of a game from 2011 was still one of the best games of 2014. That's how high From Software sets the bar.

I do agree with you but , how is DS2 a bad port ? The performance is just great and it can run on low end computers really easy , the game is really not meant to be played with mouse and keyboard and they didn't fix the durability bug since they would admit they done goofed and that's not something people in Japan do .

My problems with the port are not so much about how it performs.

I played through both games using KBM. The first with DSMfix, the second with Auto Hotkey. Aside from some maneuvers like rolling backstabs the games were actually very playable. But they required hacks to make them so. It would have been trivial for the devs to fix their games' KBM controls, but no, they didn't. They're were lazy.
Also, graphics options only accessible in-game and not from a launcher or main menu. They were lazy.
Also also, the moment you change settings weird things can happen. That this wasn't found earlier tells me that they were lazy.
Also also also, game logic is tied to frames is just bad. (Durability bug, among others). Fuck pride, fix mistakes. They didn't even for their GOTY version which is just fucking lazy.

The Dark Souls 2 port is by no means unnacceptable like the first game was. But it was a lazy port, an acceptable port, not a good one by any means.

Both games are excellent in their own right.
Dark Souls 1 has a better story, and it tops the second game in design aspect as well:

  • Better creature design
  • Better boss fights
  • The level design is superb with lots of shortcuts to connect many areas together
  • More NPC interactions, each with their own story: Lautrec, Petrus etc.

However Dark Souls 1 without a doubt is much easier.
Dark Souls 2 took me 100 hours+, being my first soul game ever, whileDark Souls 1 I've finished in about 20 hours and got all achievement in only 78 hours.

So would say:
Dark Souls 1 > Dark Souls 2 > Scholar of the First Sin (they lowered the difficulty!)
