STAR WARS: Knights of the Old Republic II got an update:

New Features:

  • Steam Workshop support! We've proudly teamed up with the Restored Content Mod team and TSLRCM will be available on day 1!
  • Achievements can now be earned through gameplay
  • Controller support
  • Native widescreen resolution support
  • Support for up to 5K monitors
  • Steam Cloud saves

I've been meaning to start it, since I've seen a lot of good comments about the game but never got around to it. Maybe now that it got an update I'll give it a try.

Don't have KOTOR II so no ga, sorry.

It's not absolutely necessary, but it is a better experience.

I wouldn't say it is necessary, but I would definitely recommend it. Not to mention most people prefer 1 over 2.

Really? I've actually noticed the opposite when I've seen the two games mentioned. The second does seem to have more bugs though. Although I haven't played them so I don't know first hand.

Generally when I've talked to people about the games they prefer the first, but it is usually due to the second having so much content cut. With TSLRCM I'm sure that changes things quite a bit though.

Yeah that seems to be the problem with Obsidian, from what I noticed. People tend to prefer their story, dialogue and characters but the games tend to be very buggy and in this case even incomplete.

First was far more positively received back in the day. Obsi was said to have killed Kotor 2 with the bugs and the cut content with bits of story that should lead somewhere but don't (due to cuts). First was a much better game, but both are good. It was probably the best of its era for the Star Wars games in my opinion.

I would have thought they killed it with the constant moping (every line of dialogue is someone whining about something) and the insane plot where you are trying to kill the Force by stabbing a sword into it. Because reasons.
And also for pretty much contradicting half of the first game's plot. And almost all of the Expanded Universe lore.

I played the game 10 years or so ago, and unlike the first game, only played it the once. I forget the details, but now that you mention it, I do remember it conflicting a bit with the first game!

A bit? It starts by stating the Sith won and killed all Jedi in the galaxy. that is a direct contradiction with the first one. Heck, later in the Dark Horse comics they pretty much retconned most of KotOR 2 out, they only kept the protagonist in, who eventually died to save Revan.

Not really, a few cameo's from KOTOR 1 people but nothing main storyline wise.

Not only one, I think you need to finish it 2 times to get all the achievements...

I wish Obsidian would somehow just get their other old games released and updated on Steam, even from the Troika era. Those that didn't suck… which practically equals all of their stuff except this boring, messy atrocity.

Wonderful news, and now, I hijack the post to ask something. Are there any KOTOR 1 mods that improve the game?? Not necessarily graphics, but, dunno, gameplay, fixes and all that stuff. Menus are tiny and kinda uncomfortable.

There are a couple of attempts to rebalance the game play. I believe one is a D20 style. There are a couple of bug fixes (nothing desperately important). Most useful mods I've seen for it are more graphical.

Edit: Oh yea I just remembered I think there is a mod that restores the Impossible difficulty. If that is your thing...

But… KotOR 1 uses the D20 based SW RPG rule book… o_O

That is what I thought, but the mod says it changes it to the tabletop rules. http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=209318

Hm. Strange. It seems BioWare rebalanced it for video games then. Well, at least it wasn't consolified completely.

Most important thing to me is to fix the tiny menus and UI problem

Sorry, I don't know anything to fix that. You could try different resolutions I suppose.

Sadly, changing res only affects in game, but not menus :S

No way, I just played KOTOR 2 all over about 2-3 months ago, I don't want to put another 30+ hours to get the achievements :(

I'd never expect that anyone would make effort to patch this game up after so many years... maybe we will have KOTOR 3 made by BioWare? :D

Thanks for the update! Nice with widescreen and 360 controller support! I've been waiting with the KOTOR games due to widescreen issues, and I like to play third person games with a gamepad.

Hope they will bring these changes to KOTOR 1 as well.

Here's the announcement on Steam, the developers seem to read the comments, and have already given at least one reply:

Can't tell from your response if KOTOR 1 is, or will be worked on . Are you able to clarify?

Its currently not on our roadmap, but I never say never :D

I've never managed to play this all the way through. Every time I've played, I get off the first planet only to be bored to tears after making it to the second.

Sounds like I'll have to buy this on Steam and give it another chance. Guess I'll be able to junk my CDs after that.

Yeah, this sums up my KOTOR2-Experience.. gotta give it another try soon I guess.. I can´t even pinpoint whats the problem with the game is, the first one is one of my alltime favourite games.. well, I´m giving it another chance soon I guess.

One thing that always bugs me about KOTOR2 is the too-fast textspeed of the NPCs with alien-languages... I don´t read that fast and its sucks to miss half the dialogue.. in the first game you could click through the lines at your own pace.. anybody knows if there is a mod or patch or something for this?

It seems to be for steam only. But in here the dev mentions working on getting the updtae for gog maybe the gog update would work with the box version? But then again it might not.
