Hello;

I'm here to ask you some opinions. I need a good cleaner for PC. Usually i use CCleaner without any problem, and i really enjoy it, but at least after some months i'm used to do a scan/clean with something more trashly/carcinogen that's able to find what CCleaner missed or that has some cool features like finding duplicated files and so on.

Years ago my favourite software was TuneUp Utilities, the one bought by AVG that now is named AVG PC TuneUp. In last two years i changed into IoBit Advanced SystemCare and it's pretty fine with the Uninstaller, the Smart Defrag, etc.

But if you've any good suggestion for a better suite, please lemme know it. :D

Thanks in advance.

Best cleaning tool is reinstalling windows once a year.

Not worth the hassle for me. I clone my system partition to avoid reinstalling - taking so much time to reinstall everything.

Can you tell about this in more detail?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes can.

Example:

I buy new laptop.

I reformat it (cleaning everything)

Repartition C: and D:

Install drivers

Install applications (ALL OF THEM THAT YOU NEED DON'T LEAVE ANY BEHIND) + Windows Update

Install Cloning application. Example: http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/index.htm

Clone my C: (D no need) to external harddrive / Network Attached Storage

Profit!!! :)

When I think my system is getting slower, I simply restore my C from the image. Like fresh install :))

D: contains my Steam games/ daily files e.g excel files, FLACs, MP3s, jpgs.

Can't I store the image on D: for example?

Permalink

Can but better not. One main points of the imaging/cloning is to make sure your backup system image is safe. Including it in the same harddrive sounds like inviting disaster if the said HDD is failing.

Which do you use EaseUS Disk Copy or EaseUS Todo Backup?

I've used either, and found both are suitable for my needs.

I'm using FREE versions, though.

Not sure why you bother including apps cause they are all going to be out of date when it comes time to restore.

Registry settings. Like activations etc. I don't want to key in again each and every single apps' serial numbers e.g Office 2013, Adobe Photoshop etc.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I guess for stuff with serials I can understand that, but any software from image date you'd have to do that on anyway. At least in my experience, I'd rather download the latest and greatest rather than upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. Because it seems like most devs can't program upgrades worth a crap and end up leaving tons of garbage behind. Same thing with drivers.

Granted, this was the way to go with Win98 and WinXP due to driver issues and overall stability issues, I just dont see it valuable since Win7 came about. Win7-10 will have basic drivers for most any modern system, which should allow you to get to the desktop, onto the interwebs, and out to grab your drivers/apps.

It's still faster to just do the updates than reinstall+update.

I'm gonna do this next time my Windows decides to screw up. Thanks, that's awesome. I've heard of it a bit before, but never bothered to do it.

Well, i do that too, and actually i've planned to do it once Windows 10 is released and stable.

But it's also a bit annoying to format everything as zeroxxx said.

Why do poeple think cleaning tools like CCleaner are actually usefull.
Last time i checked windows has a perfectly fine cleanup for safe use build into it, wich is all your computer needs.
But if you are one of those peope who think that cleaning registery (hardly 0.00001 MB) makes any diffrence, enjoy.

I know CCleaner got some great tools in them, including wiping data better then ther tools from excistance.
But other then that i see no real usage in any cleaner for just cleaning ur pc.

What use is there in cleaning the registery possibly harming your software in the process without acually noticable cleaning anything.

Windows reads the registry for almost everything you do. The registry tells windows where to find and how to use the vast majority of the programs and services that run, including all your background services that are always on.

The more bloated your registry becomes, with old unused registry keys via uninstalled programs that didn't clean their registry entries out, various updates adding new entries and invalidating old, and so on, the longer the time to read through the registry is.

A fair amount of the complaints people have of their computers "feeling slower" over time can be traced back to file system bloat, and registry bloat.

Programs like CCleaner (which is the only one I will use personally) will go through and remove the vast majority of them, and genuinely do help your computer start many programs faster, sometimes a very noticeable amount. I generally try to run CCleaner about once every 3 months or so - more often if I've gone on a binge of downloading Steam games and such from bundles to try and later uninstalled.

I COULD go do this manually, however it's very annoying and time consuming, so it's far easier (lazier) to use a program like CCleaner to do it for me.

As you mentioned, it's not technically without risk of "harming your software" in that it could, in theory, mistakenly remove an entry for a program that is still installed and create some issues. That said, I've been using CCleaner for like 5 or 6 years now I think, and I have yet to ever encounter that. Meanwhile I recently manually removed a single program's clusterfuck of registry files from a friends computer for him because the uninstall didn't do so and so the old registry files were preventing him from installing an updated version, and doing it manually took the better part of 30 minutes.

Extrapolating that out to a more reasonable estimate per program of about half that time, and assuming at least 10 programs worth of time every three months or so, and in the 5 years I've used that program would have saved me somewhere around 37.5 hours I would otherwise have spent manually cleaning stuff, or alternatively having had more slowdown/error issues to fix, or more frequent Windows re-installations to deal with. The reality is that the time I've saved is probably considerably higher than that. Personally I would call the risk-reward ratio of that hugely in my favor, since if it ever did erroneously damage one program, fixing that would only take like 30 minutes or less. Risking 30 minutes of work to save 38 HOURS sounds totally worth it to me.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And then you get people like me, who had a single ill-advised registry removal which then blocked the computer's ability to use a webcam AT ALL, regardless of model, port and drivers used.

My past experiences with CCleaner were pretty bad, though they were over 8 years ago. If there isn't a tool inside windows itself to do it, I wouldn't trust a third party registry chef to do a better job. Prodding the registry in any fashion, at least with me, has this awful habit of only showing it's 'damage' months later in some cryptic manner, which usually has me googling around for solutions like an idiot until a pure bolt out of the blue reminds me of what I did.

Registry matters is weird vooodoo, mang. Best leave it alone and do a windows reinstall like a good (patient) christian. Like nuking it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure!

There was a video on YouTube (can't find it anymore) where a guy installed a fresh windows copy and did nothing but install CCleaner. You guessed it, it showed errors .. :D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is actuallly quite accurate.
Windows OS is not clean by default. i believe that windows 7 comes for instance by default with 700+ system errors, in windows 8 there are 300 left.
Some of these are the ones u might know from Switching from Wifi to UTP suddenly making internet not working anymore forcing a reboot of ur computer or USB port installations not reconising after booting of OS ect.

The truth of the matter is that all of those tools are just a pile of shit you can already do in windows. The only one I ever find useful is Ccleaner; don't bloat your PC with the "cleaning" programs that you don't need.

Ccleaner is still among the best.

You might want to use RED (remove empty directory) or Broken Shortcut cleaner. But they won't affect your system as much as Ccleaner. And even other registry cleaners.... I'm not so fond of using other than Ccleaner. Not being fanboy or anything, but I've seen the history of Ccleaner myself and I trust they don't do harm.

You don't do defragmenting without cleaning it out e.g recycle bin and temporary files. It would take much longer if the build is accumulated. Ccleaner simply makes things easier.

Never has Ccleaner failed me once. It even helped me to improve some old laptops' conditions that never got maintained.

???
it's so effin easy to clear the recycle byn, delete all temporary files & internet temporary files and rotting humongous accumulated GBs of savegames with default OS tools...
Windows will even defrag on background if you want, or when you tell it to if you prefer...

cleaning the registry is nice but not really necessary, nor does it bring any real improvement, Microsoft advice is you definitely don't need to touch it

I'm doing it at work, I'm doing it in many computers at once. What you do manually can't be compared to CCleaner's speed.

PC Cleaner and Registry cleaner are two different things basically. While I can understand why we should not touch registry, using CCleaner to clean up junks has no detrimental effect.

edit2: personally this pc im using: avast home, malewarebytes free, & wise portable tools =) (SSD here so no need for defrag tools)

Been using the following for years with nothing but great results:

  • CCleaner
  • Wise Registry Cleaner
  • Revo Uninstaller

I also use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit, paired with Kaspersky Internet Security.

There's also PeerBlock, and the ZenMate VPN plugin for Firefox/Chrome if you're... doing questionable shit.

Before upgrading to an SSD, I used to also use Auslogics Disk Defrag.

Edit: I included extra information on what else I use, 'cause it's all related to PC performance/maintenance.
