April 2, Update
1st Demo Available on steam!

Hope you will like how the game is shaping up as much as I did :) their Kickstarter ends on the 8th of May, but even a wishlist or sharing the news would be a great support for the small indie studio!

Detention: 2nd GA

Original Post

If any of these names sound familiar, a small story: On February 21, 2019, two days after Devotion's release, players discovered a fulu talisman decorating a wall in the game that contained the words "Xi Jinping Winnie the Pooh", this triggered a sea of backlash from the Chinese community and legal trouble for the small Taiwanese studio, eventually forcing them to pull the game from Steam and other potential platforms.

I find it to be an immense shame regarding what happened, as the game itself looked very interesting - but the developers were never able to put it back in the stores, and only a long time after, were they able to sell it DRM free on their own platform. I am happy to see they could still forge ahead despite all their difficulties and hope to bring more awareness to this new game they are working on.

Thanks for reading, small GA with the only game they have on Steam: Detention 1st GA.

and Luckz Detention Movie

so they are already known for causing trouble?

A piece of paper mentioning the president and winnie the pooh doesn't seem like trouble for me.

I would think depending on where one lives, it's just freedom of speech. Though in their case, regardless if it was intentional or not, it did gave them trouble.

Our country has some good leaders and we still make memes out of them daily, what trouble?

its just an easter egg. and Xi definitely does look like winnie the pooh, he just has thinner skin so he needed to censor them.

That's just China's leader not having a sense of humor.

In truth, don't expect anything gaming to be approved by the Chinese government any time soon due to their HIGHLY restrictive time limiting for kids to play games in China.
Their government hasn't approved a game since last July. Many people, like me, are still waiting for games such as My Time At Sandrock to be released, but can't due to China.

Time to pull out of China and give release control to governments that aren't nearly as restrictive.

I'm surprised, considering Pathea is a Chinese game developer, thought they'd have a better chance to get the approval compared to foreign studios ^^;; Glad to see a fellow My Time fan! Also can't wait for Sandrock :D

you make me feel ashamed xD I restarted the game for that one character that is time sensitive but never got around to playing more after 160 hours, and I noticed now that there were achievements I hadn't completed too ^^ guess I know what I should make time for next.

Neat. I didn't register but checked the FAQ first. The one for the campaign didn't share any relevant information but their store says this.

Q1 What are the payment methods
Currently, the credit card is the only payment method.

Ah thanks for the info, I bought the early bird and hadn't checked - not even my type of game (platformer) but the theme was nice and intriguing, plus I had always wanted to support them.

The audio was great aswell.

Thanks alot for the info, I hadn't known that! And you say is good? This alone made this entire thread worth it <3 <3

Also, totally understandable, not a fan of platformers myself, but I liked the theme, art and music enough, hopefully it wont be terribly difficult xD

I do hope they keep the high level story telling with the new game.

the movie (2019):

the series (2020):
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13175760/
https://mydramalist.com/77815-detention

This series was definitely a great continuation/ sequel story to anyone who has played the game or watched the 2019 movie based on the game

You do not need to see the original because this show fills you in on what has happened but I have played the game and watched the movie and the way that this show is written, it is definitely a sequel

Totally different than the movie (a cheap horror movie I disliked), this is a drama of multi-generational trauma and the long struggle for healing.

(Until your thread I didn't know about either of those, either.)

Hey there, thanks for the links - I find Pagui (because of the spooky theme) and Tianding specially interesting :) much appreciated!

Pagui was pretty decent for an indie game.

Thanks for the recommendation, what kept it at decent? I was interested with the supernatural theme, but less sure about the action gameplay...

The developers knew exactly what they wanted to accomplish but the execution of that dream wasn’t so smooth.
You may find yourself scratching your head with some of the puzzles, and on occasion not understand how to progress on with the story. It has some platforming sections which are confusing, and combat while not exactly difficult , requires a bit of luck and strategy.
Overall, it suffers from “first game” syndrome, where a bit more polish and understanding of what makes a game enjoyable could have made it a great game.

Thanks for the clarifying review, I can absolutely imagine how it could happen for their first game and that is a good sign for a new studio, I will check it out when the opportunity presents, cheers đź‘Ś

was this game of particular interest to you? your description sounded very well informed and not all of it is gleaned from just playing :)

The folklore was definitely what caught my attention, not a huge fan of sidescroll action, so I have been waiting for a good discount, thanks for the recommendation!

I still regularly hit myself in the face with a lightweight cat as punishment for not buying Devotion when I could and should have.

(I also have a heavy cat, or two.)

Aww thanks for the adorable image description, so you have one heavy cat or two plus one lightweight cat? xD

once they suddenly pulled from the store I just hit myself in the face regularly for failing to buy it in time, sadly, no cat to do so with :/

it was good to find they could put it up DRM-free though they couldn't do so on GOG where i at least have some games ^^;;

I'm not made of marble, virtually never naked, and the last time I could safely hold several of my cats at once was plenty of years ago.
Otherwise it's spot on.
