Mystery and suspense often cross very deeply into horror territory, and Higurashi certainly does so with frightening regularity.
That is your opinion, which I am sure most people would disagree with.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's not though. Higurashi is not a horror series by any stretch of the imagination. DEEN just over-dramatized everything.
It's not an opinion, it is a fact. Nobody who has actually read the VN disagrees with that. The anime is garbage, a terrible adaptation.

Seriously... I read them and I am here defending the anime.

I think you're in the minority that doesn't consider it to be horror. Does it elicit fear? Unknown entity trying to kill everyone. Strange apparitions stabbing people. Finger nail extraction torture. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it does a good job at horror.
Terrible adaptation /= terrible anime. BTW, I've read (most of) the VNs and I don't think it's a terrible anime. Tada, I just broke your fact right there.

I second Ghost Hunt. Labyrinth arc is one of the scariest things I've seen in any form of entertainment, English or Japanese.

People have mentioned Higurashi already, but Umineko no Naku Koro ni isn't bad (but I didn't think it was good either. Give it a try and see what you think). Give Shiki a go too if you like atmospheric mystery horror. That one I can definitely say was good.
Edit: To make everyone happier, I edited my mention of Umineko to be a bit more negative.
Comment has been collapsed.
Holy crap, did you just say that the Umineko anime is good? No. NO. Get out.
The Umineko anime is a travesty, far, far worse than even the Higurashi anime adaptation. You MUST read the VN for Umineko, no exceptions. The series only adapts half of the VNs, and it will NEVER get a second season because it was so widely recognized as being a horrible adaptation that it was one of the worst selling anime OF ALL TIME.
Heck, you can't even just pick up the VN on book 5 either because the anime cuts out so many vital details, ruins so many scenes with factually incorrect information and even changes entire character personalities.
Do yourself a favor and go read the Umineko VN. From the start.
Edit: Also... it's not a horror series at all... It's purely mystery/fantasy (depending on how you look at it...)

Please let me know where I stated that Umineko is good.
I consider bad to be 3/10 or so. I believe I rated Umineko a 4/10, hence "not bad"
And just to let you know, mystery and horror are not mutually exclusive like you think it is.
Comment has been collapsed.
You said it "isn't bad".
But that's the thing. The anime RUINS it. The VN is so much better it's not even funny. They REALLY screwed up that anime in so many ways. I assure you, if you read the VN, you would like it. Few people dislike the Umineko VN, it's really an incredible story.

You don't seem to understand that I don't consider Umineko to be any good. I have a feeling that we have a difference of opinion here on how strong the word "bad" is. As I said below, I merely listed it as an option for the OP since there are some people who do like it.
In addition, I don't know why you keep riding your VN-high-horse. Whether or not something is a faithful adaptation has no bearing on whether the anime is good or not. The OP is looking for animes in general, not good anime adaptations. There is a huge difference.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes it absolutely does have a bearing on it. You don't seem to understand here. It's so wildly different that it may as well not even be considered the same series. You cannot say that Umineko is not good having only seen the anime because THE ANIME IS NOT GOOD, AND EVERYONE WHO HAS READ THE VN KNOWS THAT THE VN IS GOOD!
Comment has been collapsed.
I have read Higurashi but not Umineko. But you don't need to have read the source material to render judgement on the adaptation. That's a fact.

I said not bad, never said it was good >.<
I think a lot of series are crap, but if someone is looking for something of that genre, I'll list all of the crappy ones too.

You gotta' be careful when you post an opinion on these here boards. Some folks don't know how to read.

Not horror at all but often creepy as shit is Future Diary.

Try Yami Shibai . ( http://myanimelist.net/anime/19383/Yami_Shibai )

Shinsekai Yori is just one of those popular animes that I can't understand why people like so much. I think I focus too much on trying to follow it through logically, but by episode 7 there was just so many infuriatingly bad inconsistencies that I couldn't watch any longer. Somehow I lasted 5 more episodes than the rest of the my friends lasted...

Watching it now, only 3 eps in, but it feels like something really special. And the ED is amazing.

Anime-planet and anidb have such horrible web designs in my opinion. MAL is where it's at!

If you're looking for a more psychological thriller, Perfect Blue(movie) disturbed me quite a bit, made me afraid to go outside right after when I had to walk my dog lol. Satoshi Kon's works are great in that sense. Paranoia Agent was good too

Sorry OP for hijacking (since I dont want to create another topic for this), can anyone actually recommend me good Romance/Comedy anime?
Here's a [list](http://myanimelist.net/animelist/sllshrm&show=0&order=4] of all anime I've seen. Would love stuff like Nodame Cantabile, My Teen Romcom SNAFU and Kimi ni todoke kinda stuff :S

Actually they didn't release the 8th episode of season 2 for like 2 weeks :P So I made that comment.
Ofcourse, few hours later, episode 8 appeared :P

I don't know what the general consensus on this anime is, as I watched it in a vacuum, but Welcome to the NHK is one of my favorites. It's on Netflix, and it's damn clever, really well-written, and quite touching at times.

How has noone suggested Shingeki no kyojin (Attack on titan) yet?
It's classified as horror and even shows up in the imdb top 250 horrors of all time, it's one of those shows that leaves you wanting for more while at the same time having this epic struggle vibe going for it.

I dunno why people are suggesting High School of the Dead because I'm not sure it would be considered proper horror. Then again, I don't tend to find "horror" very horrific. Mostly just dumb and/or gory.
Now, if you want to talk about anime which does have horrific aspects to it, there is plenty of "non-horror" anime which offers that. Here are a few:
Akira (the movie)
Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne
Blood+
Attack on Titan
Witchblade

How do you consider people being ripped apart not a horror?
It's simply another form of horror, some people watch horror for the gore, some watch for the scares and then there's me, i watch it for the mystery :P
Imo it's a shame there isn't enough source material to make a season 2 and i'm kinda expecting the same to happen to AoT. :/

It's really more a comedy-action series than horror, in the vein of Zombieland. Zombie stuff is generally considered horror, but that show's not really intended to be scary, just really, really fun, and it succeeds quite well at that.

To be fair, I have to admit it's been a while since I've watched it, the only scene I can clearly recall is some scene on top of a roof where some people get cornered by zombies and they get torn apart, guess it's been long enough to start re-watching it.

Hello there,
I recently started watching anime and the first series that I watched were "Corpse Party: Tortured Souls". All the time I thought that anime is kinda childish (no offense to the fans) and not interesting, but I've changed my mind when I watched "Corpse Party: Tortured Souls". It was really a good anime series, the only bad thing that was bothering me was lack of longer series :(
So I'm writing to ask you (anime fans), are there any similar series to "Corpse Party: Tortured Souls"? Maybe you have your own recommedation to good animes (I'm looking for some horror ones) ? I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks!
P.S Pitty I don't understand Japanese. So I'm looking only for english or english subbed animes.
