What is your cap? Is it per month, week, day, etc?

How do you get around the cap limitation?

Have you considered keeping your Steam game downloads on an external drive when you need to uninstall? Archive the install folder onto an external drive, and uninstall from Steam. When you want to reinstall, restore the archived copy back into its original location. Start a reinstall in Steam, and Steam will detect preexisting files and only update the files that need updating. If there's nothing to update, you won't download anything. Saves a lot of installation time, too.

Nope, though there is certain recommended limitations. And I don't really want to hog up 0.5% of network capacity all the time :(

You either over estimate your ability or severely under estimate your ISP's network. A single user consuming .5% of an ISP's network, even just locally, would need to be using at least 500MB/s at a constant rate. Or perhaps your ISP really is that shitty. Most ISP's oversell their networks ability, but more so they throttle the entire network so they can milk consumer for more money.

Crappy AT&T here, said "blazing fast U-Verse" is blazing fast for snails at 350 KB/s (usually steady), ping's great at <100ms from all over the world, and data cap is 150GB per month. Despite my attempts, I have never exceeded like 70.

id imagine my speed gets restricted after a certain amount but seen as i dont benchmark it anyway i dont care, virgin media arent terribly cheap but i think their service is about the best in the uk, theyve been my only isp though so ive got nothing to compare them to and im in no hurry to change tbh yeah it could be cheaper but i hear horror stories for how crappy some ADSL based isp's are here i nthe uk due to our in parts victorian phone network and think yeah ill stick with fiber optic thanks and buy a little less junk food per month :)

Currently one a plan that is unlimited everything for $2 a day, so $60 for a whole month if you use it. My top usage for a month was just under 100GB.

This is Optus's $2 a day plan, and it's only 3G but it gets the job done.

No data cap for me. Speed isn't that great but I can live with it since I can download everything I want. Of course, there are those underpants stealing gnomes who always steal my speed by downloading nasty pictures of womens panties.

I have no cap but my connection is as quick as a rheumatic turtle.

You would think, but in the US its very common to have data caps on everything :|.

I theoretically have unlimited mobile data while I have a 250GB data cap on my home connection. I say theoretical because if someone were to use 50GB or more in a month, they would be booted off the network unless you are part of some kind of business/enterprise account.

In the US it's common practice with ISPs and most customers aren't even aware they have any sort of a data cap.

Thing is, most people don't have a problem with it. The big thing the caps are intended to do is to make sure that people who use an excessive amount of data are either slowed down or pay more for it to ensure all customers aren't getting shit speeds because of one guy streaming Netflix in HD 24/7.

Though really, it's just a way to get extra profits and prevent the ISPs from having to put in the infrastructure to actually make sure that the guy who streams Netflix in HD 24/7 won't slow down other people. Because actually going in and upgrading all our networks costs money and that means less profit.

But seriously, people don't tend to use extremely large amounts of data unless they are doing a lot of downloading or streaming. I work from home, and my work requires a good internet connection because we remotely access our systems and the data from our systems is constantly uploading and downloading data. So I have a pretty consistent amount of data used for 8 hours a day 5 days a week. I use on average about 20GB a month between my work, my browsing after work, the stuff I stream and my game downloads for new games I buy. My cap is 250GB, closest I ever came to it was when I got a new computer and redownloaded a good chunk of my Steam library. However I also pay $50 a month for 10mbps, and consistently get 15mbps, so yeah, I'll deal with the cap for the fact that over 2 years I've gotten faster speeds than I'm paying for.

Been travelling a lot, in some countries a data cap is unimaginable, in other ones unlimited internet is unimaginable, and in some there is no internet.

No data cap, but we are on Rural Broadband, which, while maxing at 1.5m on the speed tests, averages out around 200k. That's what happens when a company is given millions to bring high-speed to rural areas, and instead they take it and use it to develop their cellular network, and sticking people with something that, at peak hours, is comparably worse than dial-up. Of course this sort of thing happens when you stick a whole valley on line of sight antennas to a relay on a tower that in turn relays the signal from other towers.

Per month it's either 250GB/500GB I think. Speeds are theoretically 20MB/s up and 1MB/s down, but it's definitely lower than that (still waiting for fibre optic that will likely never come).

And yes, when moving to a new computer, I cut and paste game directories (such as those on Steam) so I don't have to redownload everything.

4 GBs/week at my current dormitory. How silly. Also internet isn't stabile and slow. They both don't know and want to know anything. They just care money...

Also dormitory uses DrayTek, which comes with a user profile system. But you can't use your shitty internet on other devices at the same time. If you turn of your other device, you have to wait 15-f'n-minutes to use your internet on other one. I believe that isn't fault of DrayTek.

I'm not surprised at all, since this city is full of bumpkins... They can't even fix basic things.

Now i'm getting 508KBPS on Steam, as always in the middle of the night. I guess they chose the cheapest pack from ISP. I'm pretty sure i'm the only one using the internet right now since most of people went to other cities and the time is 05:32AM.

And 30+ person uses this sh*t. Can you believe it? And not all of the residents are students, some of them have important jobs to do.

And most tragicomical part of the story: owner of this residence has hundred thousands of money. Greedy *****s.

Pay 40~ for 25Mb/s on contract/ new customer agreement, normal price is closer to 60-80 dollars, get ATM 22Mb/s, but average closer to 5Mb/s. Data cap at 250GB, which is supposedly unenforced, but there are mixed reviews on that, and they certainly pester the shit out of me if I go 1byte over.

I will download and save most things. Average about 70GB a month typically, so I might splurge and download everything on the last week of the cycle if I need to get something large. I have 4 drives and 1 backup OS drive. 3 are strictly data, 1x 1TB hdd for all my games, digital/physical/metaphysical w/e. If its a game or game related it gets put on my game drive. Then I have 2 1.5TB drives I use for things like Anime, Movies, Cartoons, TV Series/shows and so on.

I have unlimited. You know, great topic! I often think about data caps and the gaming industry.

It is why I will not buy a game that requires me to use bandwidth, unless it is needed for multiplayer. Call me paranoid, but I have absolutely no faith in corporations, and it wouldn't surprise me if companies like Roger's (Bandwidth cap promoter company here in Canada) have something going about that with companies like Blizzard or EA. They could make a killing milking our bucks by forcing us to spend money on bandwidth just to play a single player game.

Instead of finding out that might be horribly true, I just refuse to contribute, by spending money, making that a reality.

Maybe I miss some things for now, but at least I have peace of mind that it sure isn't me! =)

200 Mbps fibre connection with no data cap, only problem is that they throttle torrents at night. I get full speed downloading from Steam and Origin.

$35 a month for internet, home phone line and a 500MB data plan 4G SIM card for tablets. I'm pretty good :)

Yes, my country bans chewing gums but at least we have high-speed internet.

I have 40GB a month. I know, it's pathetic. Every game I download is a hard decision I have to make. I can download either a couple of indies a month, or an AAA every three months, 'cause I use the internet for other stuff too.

And I backup ALL my games, so I can uninstall them once I'm done.

I have no need to get around it, I normally only use about 20GB a month and that's even with the fact that I work from home and my internet is pretty consistently used for work systems since those are remote access.
