Hey guys,

I am currently looking for some really good sleeper hits. After finishing Darkest of Days and Freedom Fighters, I'm in the mood for some really good games which didn't get the recognition they deserved.

Of course there's something in for you replying to this thread.

Have a great day!

+1 RaidersSphere4th - Definitely is a low poly Ace Combat

The other games games are hardly lesser known given their huge review counts...

Hunt: Showdown (MP-only FPS) - a game that seems to be well known only in its community. :p High risk and high octane gameplay with cowboys in horror setting is one of its kind, and I'd recommend anyone to at least check it out. Not everyone stays to play it though :/
We Were Here (Coop puzzle) - requires 2 people, but while it's somewhat short, it's fun to only see half of a puzzle, and try to communicate properly with your partner.
Piczle Lines DX+α (Relaxing puzzle) - simple, but good.
RAZED (3D time attck platformer) - Test your reflexes in high speed environment. With in built high scores, you can compete against yourself if you want. DIscovering alternative routes and/or getting the hidden upgrades and then improving your time feels great. Getting highest rank on all routes is quite tough, and I still haven't done it on one route ;_;
No Time To Explain Remastered (Comedy platformer) - maybe it's well known and I just didn't know, but it's both fun in its simple gameplay, and with the comedy.
SKYHILL (Survival roguelike) - a surprisingly decent game that clicked with me. You might need a failed run or 3 to devise a plan to get to the end, but it's quite a satisfying payoff if you get it done
Infested Planet (RTS) - simple rts game where enemy is infinite in number, but so are your bullets.
Steamworld Heist (Tactical) - side view 2D tactical game with bouncing bullets. Fun in its own way.
Penarium (Platformer) - 2D platformer all about dying and trying not to get killed. Even if you suck at platformers, overcoming obstacles is doable (I think), and probably all the more rewarding when you figure out how to do it, and pull it off.

I hated the poison spider boss, that thing was not fun. Think it also contributed to some fears.

lol... Sorry to hear that.
I had to look it up as I didn't remember it. Well, some of the boss fights were indeed quite difficult and that was definitely one of tough ones. But I consider myself to be a bad player overall, so I find games difficult a lot more often then others.

Snake pass was a funny concept ! ^^

I tried it due to the concept of controlling a snake. But the game proved to be too difficult for me. I gave up after a few levels.

I've always been fond of Gemcraft: Chasing Shadows. It used to be a free flash game IIRC. I bought it on sale (don't think I'd pay $10 for a game that was initially free and can be played via something like flashpoint).

Story wise though, Ikenfell is pretty fun. I've been slowly working through it and definitely enjoying the gameplay.

Umihara Kawase trilogy goes on sale all the time, it's the bar none best grappling action game. If you want a very pared down but smart FPS I'd recommend the original Lovely Planet, another "goes on sale for nothing all the time" type of game. And the new Remix version is supposed to be a return to form!

+1 for Battle chef brigade and Hand of fate 1&2, extraordinary !
Door kickers 2 is super promising, like the 1st one.
Abandon ship, i've been hesitating to buy it for years, it looks like a cool naval game, but i'm not so fond of the Lovecraftian atmosphere.
Wargroove, i found it average, Banner of the maid is much better in the same genre.

The Void Rains Upon Her Heart - https://store.steampowered.com/app/790060/The_Void_Rains_Upon_Her_Heart/
One of the best shm'up with only boss fight, with roguelike elements and the game have a huge content and still getting updating monthly.(85 boss fights with multiple levels difficulty for more than 500 differents battles)
Required at last 10 hours for discover half of the games, maybe at last 25-30+ hours for finishing it with all 550+ achievements.
On steam : 100% positive with more than 250 votes (0 negatives votes)

Was bundle in Yogscast Jingle Jam 2021, get it during a trade and i don't regret at all ...

Ye Fenny - Revenge of the Evil Good Shepherd: https://store.steampowered.com/app/769020/Ye_Fenny__Revenge_of_the_Evil_Good_Shepherd/

So this is a game made by one person, whereby the gameplay isn't the best, but the cutscenes are some of the funniest around! They're ultra low budget, but that's why they're so charming!

Milo and the Magpies
A cute hand-painted Hidden object and puzzle game. Not sure if it's really unknown because it has so many reviews, but I never heard of it before last month when I stumbled on it and I even mentioned it to friends and they haven't heard of it but were interested. (More than a few ended up buying it and I gifted a couple copies.)

I don't generally like narrative games, but these two are the exception.
Out There: Ω Edition - you either love it or you hate it, but it's definitely an experience.
Gorogoa - even if you hate puzzle games you should play this one. Not exactly a sleeper, but as someone who plays mostly shooter and rpgs this was not on my radar until I chanced across it recently.

Out There: Ω Edition, what a gem !
You can find a similarly fascinating atmosphere in The long journey home.
Unfortunately really hard difficulty and redundant mini sequences that are difficult to handle (this is deliberate) where you have to land a capsule on different planets have put off many players. Stats say just 6% players managed to come back home... and i'm not one of them. Without reading the wiki, it's hard to discover some stunning but even more hidden secrets.

Nice to run across another fan of Out There!
I gave The Long Journey Home a pass last year, though I can't remember what put me off. Maybe some complaints about the controls. But I think you've sold me - it's only $1 right now, so I have little to lose. Considering it was those strange, random encounters that made Out There so good, what would you recommend, story or adventure mode?

Even in easy it's already super hard to come back home. Some achievements we need to play in explorer, but to enjoy the story and encounters, i would say story is much better. You are right that the handling is really not easy at start, the time to get used to brake by accelerating in the opposite direction, managing the curve. I just restarted in story and was puzzled when i finally got into orbit, but then i remembered discovering this new planet : it's breathtaking. So wish you a fun and breathtaking discovery !

If your GPU overheats in graphics options don't hesitate to set limit to 1000k and activate Vsync.

Aaah hello... i just did it (after 30h of failures...), managed to come back to earth for 1st time !

For a not too horrible travel, some tips :

Almost gave up multiple times because it was so hard, but ambiance was stunning and that's what brought me back.
Have a great and safe travel !

Congrats on making it home! Think I will give it a try very soon when I have some real time to commit to it. (Still messing around with a one month Xbox sub, because I get to try a bunch of games and see if I like them without having to actually buy them first.) Have you tried Hardspace Shipbreaker, btw? Very different space game than the ones we've been discussing, but also has a chill, late nite kind of vibe to it.
Thanks again for even more great advice!

Hardspace shipbreaker i tried the demo long time ago, it looks very different but why not on sale in the future.
Here i just restarted Out there omega, it's really charming and there is this "special feeling" that i didn't find back trying oceans of time.

Have fun on xbox game pass !

I might be a bit out of touch with reality... most games for me are sleepers hit because I only get to know about their existence years after their launch.
Said that, few smaller games that are usually overlooked:
Dust,
Valdis story,
Yomawari
Mages of Mistralia
Rise and Shine

Aeterna Noctis is not getting the recognition it deserves imho, if you like metroidvanias it's a must, some platforming sections are brutal but never unfair, it's the game I had most fun with this year, but couldn't complete it yet because of tendinitis :<

Endless Sky is a fun and free 2D space game. You can be a trader, mercenary, space taxi or any mix of these while you explore the milky way. Controls might take some getting used to as it has inertia based movement in zero g.
