NEW PUZZLE POSTED, CHECK THE NEW THREAD!

EPIC VISUAL NOVEL PUZZLE #001

Yep, renamed the thread, please come back to this page for a new puzzle regarding the very same VN.

This is the first in a series of puzzles with just one question. Just a new approach I'm trying.

The question isn't hard nor easy, it is intended to take a long time to solve unless you either luckily have experienced a specific experience or are a very very resourceful ninja from Yakuza. As it should take a long time to solve this, you've been granted over one week to solve this puzzle. If nobody solves a puzzle in this special series, the puzzle will NOT end - another giveaway will be opened until at least one user solves it AND enters the giveaway.

The puzzle may be slightly "nerfed" over time - concerning the method to solve it.

Without further delay,

1QP - One Question Puzzles - #001

Ends at September 15, 2015, 2:23pm UTC

Enjoy brothers and sisters.

WARNING: Googling is NOT recommended (because of plot spoilers) and will NOT really help you to solve this.

You solved this through Google? I don't believe that. Although it is possible, you would need context.

What jatan said. Don't encourage piracy, even if the game can't be purchased. You can be banned, or even worse, put steamgifts in legal problems

Aren't you being extreme by calling it piracy? I'm just trying to do something nice here, and you know that very well. The puzzle will continue. Unless moderation explictly asks me to take it down or takes it down.

I absolutely despise piracy just like you and I want to make it very clear to avoid any misunderstanding here.

Thanks.

Since the game is a commercial product that is no longer being sold, in order to obtain it, you can either pay an exorbitant price to ship in a copy from a 3rd party retailer OR download it without paying, online (aka. piracy).

It doesn't matter if piracy is legal or illegal in your country. The bottom line is piracy is still piracy, and this is not something that is condoned on this website.

I am fully aware of the rules of this website. Still, my intentions by making this thread were absolutely not to encourage any sort of piracy and were far away from harmful - I have opened this thread for the sole purpose of raising awareness for a game I am a fan of.

There is a world of difference between a person promoting piracy and this thread, and if you can't see that difference, you are taking it to extremes. I beg of you, please attempt to understand me.

I would really, really be sad to see this thread closed, but if support demands it, I will unfortunately be forced to.

I am not punishing people for not playing the game. I am giving incentives for people who actually play it.
The other puzzle will not be shut down and the giveaway winners will receive their games.

Basically, only people who pirate the game stand any chance at solving it and those who have morals will have no chance... OK, then.

Comment has been collapsed.

Technically, it's not piracy:

According to Wikipedia, "Copyright infringement is the use of works protected by copyright law without permission, infringing certain exclusive rights granted to the copyright holder". The copyright holder no longer exists, so their rights are, in turn, non-existant as well. While you cannot irrefutably claim that downloading the game is one hundred percent legal, you cannot irrefutably claim that it is illegal.

It's a gray area.

Actually, after CyberFront dissolved in late 2013 the whole Infinity series went to 5pb. So there is a copyright holder.

Do you have a source? I can't find any trustworthy source that confirms such a claim. I have extensively searched about this before creating this thread.

I'm absolutely sure I read about it but I can't find a reliable source (searched for about an hour). The only thing I have is that 5pb. published a download edition of Never7, Ever17 and Remember11 on 30. May 2014 here (If you click on any title you see 5pb as publisher and the date). And vndb confirmed that release here

Don't know if that's good enough but they published it after CyberFront was dissolved :)

I have also read about it, but also could not locate a reliable source. Ultimately, I intend to continue this thread unless support tells me to stop, as I really enjoy it.

There shouldn't be any problems as long as you don't encourage (possible) piracy. In fact I really like your idea and will play the game if I find the time :).

People who don't own the game and want to solve the puzzle can still buy the download version from the link above or just watch a Let's play.

Six puzzle solvers so far, and none of them actually played the game like they're supposed to.

Fear not, today I will be posting on this very thread yet another puzzle regarding Never7 with a different, better prize so that people will actually put some effort:

  • It won't be just one question
  • Questions will be designed in a way that will ensure the person has played through the game
  • I will provide very useful help/advice for people who actually play the game (via Steam)
  • I will provide installation help
  • There will be a very long timeframe to solve this puzzle
  • The puzzle won't be excessively hard, just something that will confirm that you played through the game and has an understanding of its plot.

I would also like to stress that the actual reward of this puzzle is the game experience itself, not the giveaways, they are just there as an incentive.

Yes, the game is THAT good.

Ever17 is part of the Infinity series, consisting of:

Never7 (originally released in 2000 for Dreamcast)
Ever17 (considered the best game in the series and one of the best VNs of all time)
Remember11 (considered good although not as good as Ever17)

Other VNs that are not part of this series:

12Riven (developed partially by the same writers of the Infinity series, after KID's bankruptcy CyberFront finished it's development, would be the first entry of the Integral series but turned out to be the only VN)
Code 18 (was entirely developed by CyberFront, so basically it's not going to the same writing style)

But you wouldn't be able to solve it without playing the game.
If you absolutely don't want to install the game, you can watch a Let's Play for almost the same experience.

If you DON'T want to PLAY the visual novel, I suggest you don't waste time trying to solve it (when and if I post the puzzle, lol)

Ha, well it was a bit hard to avoid when it's the default route you get if you don't meet the criteria for the others. It was definitely the route I liked the best though, and obviously explained a lot of things. There are still more answers I'm looking for, though!

You'll have to play through the entire game though.

Now that the puzzle is over, may I ask for the answer you were looking for? I took several hours to play through Yuka's route, and I wasn't able to answer the question correctly. Avonyel also appears to have played through the game and been unable to answer the question. Yet several people who never played the game were able to answer the question...how? What seemingly magical combination of Boolean terms were they passing through their favorite search engine?

I'll outline what I remember about the bells from my playthrough, so maybe you can see where I got lost. Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn't played the game, so if you haven't played through the game at least once, please stop reading now and play the game.

There are a total of three bells in the story, bell 1 and bell 2 are small silver bells with crimson strings tied around them, and bell 3 is a larger silver bell hanging from the eaves of the building modeled after a small shinto shrine inside the Shiki no Mori Temple (though Makoto notes that bell 3 is not that bell). Makoto finds bell 1 washed up on Moon Beach on Week 1, Day 1, and because of the feeling of ominous premonition he feels seeing it, picks it up and throws it into the ocean. Yuka finds bell 2 on Week 1, Day 3, also washed up on Moon Beach, and also throws it into the ocean after finding it. (But we don't discover this fact until later in the story.) The next time Makoto sees a bell is when he and Yuka walk to Viewpoint Park on Week 1, Day 4, where they see bell 1, which had again washed up on Moon Beach and was found by a young girl (because of these facts, I kept trying answers like, "Moon Beach and Viewpoint Park", but nothing I tried was accepted as correct). Yuka trades with the young girl to obtain bell 1 and secretly keeps it with her from that point on. Makoto and Yuka see bell 3 when searching for Kurumi at the Shiki no Mori shrine after the BBQ on Week 1, day 4 (but, again, since Makoto notes that it wasn't that bell, I didn't think this was the bell you were looking for...I still tried a few variations of Shiki no Mori shrine and Tokitsukasa shrine in my answers just in case, though). Kurumi gives Haruka a small white bag containing bell 2 to give to Makoto as a gift (Kurumi found it on the beach, though it may have been Princess Beach this time) on week 1, day 5, and Haruka gives the bag containing bell 2 to Makoto sometime around midnight between days 5 and 6 on week 1. Makoto does not open the bag until the fateful events at the shrine on day 6, when we loop around to week 2 (or is it two million?). During week 2, Makoto and Yuka both remember the previous week, and they decide to try to find the bells as soon as possible as "insurance". Yuka finds bell 1 on Moon Beach on week 2, day 1, and Kurumi finds bell 2 on Moon Beach on week 2, day 3, and gives it to Yuka, who gives it to Makoto. They hang onto these bells until they are destroyed at the end of the story.

So where do you consider the bells to have been originally? If not Moon Beach and Viewpoint Park (from the point of view of our protagonist), then where? The ocean? Were you asking about bell 3 at the shrine? Or was the origin of the bells given in some plot thread that I did not happen to find in my playthrough?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My personal guess is that the bells came from somewhere else prior to even being found by Makoto in the place you mentioned on day one, to be revealed in one of the later, unlockable routes. I only started the game yesterday so I didn't get that far.

Either that or I had the format wrong on the answer. I'm curious too.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just made it to the real answer - you technically have the names by the end of Yuka's route, but it isn't spelled out until the end of Izumi's (well, the Izumi Cure route at least, haven't played her original route yet).

Your Never7 adventures have not yet ended though. Watch the epilogue if you haven't done so by getting Curé A ending yet again, then play regular Izumi route (which is kinda an "extra"), after that play the Yuka Curé route on Append Story. Yuka Curé consists of an addon scenario where you re-experience the second part of Yuka's route (after time travel) from Yuka's perspective.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Originally they have been at the shrines, because of the island's tradition, obviously the bells didn't come out of thin air, their purpose was the festivals celebrating the shrines (Tokitsukasa Shrine not existing anymore but the festival still remained).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So what was the answer you were looking for? I strongly suspected that bell 1 and bell 2 came from the same place you find bell 3, and I so tried both "Shiki no Mori shrine" and "Tokitsukasa shrine" (and a few variations on the names), but neither was accepted as correct.

The game was much better than I expected, to be fair. It's just that it took me a few hours to play through the Yuka plot, and I don't have a lot of spare time in my life right now to play through the game another four (five?) times to unlock all of the endings. And if I'm being honest, I'm probably a little bitter that at least two people who played through the game weren't able to solve the puzzle in time, while almost ten people were able to answer the question without playing the game at all.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It was both, in the format X and Y.

At the very end of the Izumi Cure route you find out that there were originally two shrines - the Shiki no Mori Shrine and the Tokitsukasa Shrine. There was one bell for each shrine. Although given all the mindfuckery in that route it's unclear exactly how true that is - or was, technically.

I don't know if I'd say it's definitely worth it because a couple of the other routes along the way pissed me off, but the Izumi Cure route is pretty crazy in a neat way.
