With the Summer Sale ongoing, this is an appropriate topic. Gotta keep saving and resisting!

I personally buy DLCs only if they add substantially to the single player campaign. No multiplayer map packs, or some crazy costume I will never use in game. Also, nothing more than $10. Never buy DLCs at full price.

List of DLCs I remember buying

  • LA Noire complete
  • Bioshock Infinite Season Pass
  • GTA IV EFLC
  • Saints Row 3 (humble bundle and came with Dead Island GOTY)
  • Dead Island GOTY
  • Max Payne 3 Season pass (not a great idea)
  • Just Cause 2 DLCs (also a bad decision)

So what are some of the DLCs you bought and recommend?

The multiplayer is the best, and the only free "DLC". Had so much fun doing random stuff online.

Yep, also the Bioshock Infinite Season Pass. I mean, it is cheaper than all three DLC's together..

I've bought the 'gold' upgrade for civ5 a while ago. I'll only consider buying DLC if I can consider it an expansion pack i.e. add new game mechanics and new explorable regions. No crazy costume packs for me.

Gold Upgrade for Civ 5. was totally worth it

Agreed, probably wouldn't have bought anything in terms of dlc aside from the big ones, gods and kings and brave new world but having it from the upgrade to gold or the complete addition is pretty nice

I agree, no point buying DLCs unless they add gameplay. The only DLC I have bought is for State of Decay(Lifeline), it adds a new map and a lot of play time. However, I don't like it because of various of things like you have to run back to your base every 20 minutes because zombies started attacking as well as every time zombies attack, one of the soldiers/ civilians dies.

Some elder scrolls and fallout DLCs are good.

Agree with most of your list, here's a few good ones:

  • Fallout 3 (actually kind of broken without it)
  • Fallout New Vegas
  • Skyrim
  • Borderlands 1 & 2
  • Dishonored
  • Not PC, but Red Dead Redemptions Undead Nightmare

I'd say the Bethesda DLC/expansions are usually worth buying as a rule, with the obvious exception of avoiding cosmetic DLC (which is true for all games).

^True. This said, you have to define "cosmetic DLC" in the large meaning of it, the Heartfire DLC for Skyrim doesn't look like it's pure cosmetic at first (or so you hope it isn't when reading the description), still it is. And full of bugs too. Gun Runners Arsenal for New Vegas is dispensable too.

That's for the theory. In real, when I really like a game, I like to have everything of it, even useless DLC, as long as they're cheap. Sounds stupid, but it's my own rule ^^

Nah, that still makes sense. When you really love a game, you want every little bit of it you can have.

Borderlands usually have great story dlc's, and I always avoided the skins because there are much better skins available aas drops in game.
Both burial at sea episodes of bioshock infinite.
Civ V Gods and Kings added new game mechanics and not just new playable nations.

Max Payne 3 DLC doesn't add anything to the campaign at all so why did you get that?

It was 50 cents more with the Season Pass during a sale, so I figured why not.

Still a waste of money though.

Never buy dlcs for incomplete/bug filled games (aka Batman AO and State of Decay). No day 1 dlc (Sniper Elite 3) and no dlc that should be on the game already (State of Decay - Breakdown).

Though I break the rules sometimes, for example with UVH for Borderlands 2. I mean, more levels? Shit, just update the game with them already you greedy bastards!

What's wrong with Arkham Origins? I'm enjoying the game and I purchased the one singleplayer DLC.

AO were full of bugs at its release. Most of them has been fixed, but there are some of them that remains (I had to do like 10 times the fight vs Deathstroke, because at some point he went through the floor...), the public opinion is still focused on the earlier/bad version of the game, which doesn't deserve it anymore...

Yeah, you're right. It's a pretty solid game now, but it still is pretty bugged. It crashed 5 times on the first investigation for me. I guess there are more smaller ones now, like weird gliding and thugs getting stuck into something. Still, these are problems that AC didn't have, and considering AO is an expanded version of AC, it's sad that it is the way it is.

^+1. We can hope that they will fix the bugs now the DLC has been released, as they said it was their priority... As you said AC didn't have the problems AO has, so it'd be great if they could make AO the way it should be... for the sake of the Arkham serie !

That's what I've been waiting for. I loved AA and AC, but I saw no hurry to get AO and be frustrated by the pile of bugs.

You did good bro! Though I think that the game is more than worth the -75% price. I bought it with -66%, couldn't resist xD .

Now that the complete version is going to be offered, I'll likely just wait for that to be on sale. I bet it'll be a good price during the Winter Sale, and hopefully by then I'll have put enough of a dent in my backlog to justify purchasing more games.
