Not Black Ops IV or Black Ops 4, but fucking "Black Ops IIII."

UPDATE (10:03pm): Shortly after publication, one source confirmed that Harden is indeed wearing the official logo for, uh, Black Ops IIII.

It honestly seems like they just wanted to make an easy logo and cheap marketing, so they just added another "I" in the middle.

Honestly I'd rather that than V. Or for the series to end

still better than cod 4: 2

Apparently another CoD wasn't enough, they needed to ruin roman numerals as well.

Actually they didn't "invent" that. Clocks that use roman numerals often write the IV as IIII. Originally it most likely had something to do with subtractive notation not being standard back in the day.

Some years ago they added a clock to my city's main square (you know, the one you normally find in front of the cathedral in every city) and so many people either complained or just inquired about why the number four was written as IIII instead of IV that they had to explain that it was a relatively common thing on the local TV station so people would stop asking XD

Eh, the design isn't horrible. You can recognize pretty easily it's 4. And not being Roman Numerals helps to distinguish it, an orange IV ain't exactly a clear product. Now IIII is different and will just be associated with that game.

Yeah, people make fun of the logo - and yeah, it's kind of dumb - but I've seen so much worse. I think a lot of the joking around is mostly because it's CoD and a lot of people like making fun of CoD.

For me, it's more of a grammatical/numerological tic than anything else.

Also, "isn't horrible" and "I've seen so much worse" are not exactly the marks of quality (especially considering the level of resources).

I mean most are just having fun laughing at cod and I don't have a problem with that. But the people who have actual outrage about this silliness I do have a bit of an issue with.

But hey, I guess this what sg is supposed to ne, we shouldn't talk about real issues 'cause it might make us think or feel, we instead must yell about games that don't matter. And we can't even show outrage of a game by criticizing the game it's self, 'cause we won't play them ourselves, instead we'll yell about the promotional material.

I use β€œtilt” liberally. We live in the age of hyperbole.

I guess the reason is what the "real" issues are, widely depends who you are.
For example I'm almost certain when I went to school Sadism and Masochism were still referred to as metal illnesses in my biology book. I've never seen anybody from the BDSM community pay much thought to that.

Or to use a different example White vs. Black racial tensions are nowhere as revelant over here in Europe as they are in the States. The racism problem over here rather stems from immigration from eastern europe and the balkans and the Syria crisis.

whether or not issues are relevent to you has nothing to do with them being "real'. Just because American racial tensions aren't relevent to you, doesn't mean they're not real. And issues that affect you an not me are still real.

But on sg, many don't want those issues to be talked about at all. Off-topic can't be filled with stuff that has actual consequences 'cause that'd make people have to think or form opinions and that's tough, instead we must use it to hate on games other hate and praise those others do or otherwise we might have to use our brains, the horror.

As for your bdsm example, I'm confused to why anyone would? They are disorders, but controllable urges aren't. Those who have sexual sadomasocistic urges but can act on them with partners consent without causing distress or harm don't have the disorder. atypical sexual intrests are not the same as paraphillas.

I pretty much agree on your first paragraph and am mostly confused about the 3rd one so let me adress mainly the 2nd one:

We can absolutely have serious discussions about social issues on SG. I've been here a while and I've never seen you suspended for one of your (constructive) threads about Transgender problems nor the threads closed. Actually I've seen LOTS of supportive voices in those threads. That not everybody agrees with you on those topics does not mean we can't have those discussions. It's something one has to be prepared for when discussing controversial topics.

I don't give a shit that people disagree. I'm annoyed that those who don't want to see it can't ignore it, they demand that that type of not be on sg.

But why did you bring it up, unprovoked, in this thread? You aren't wrong, but it kinda feels like you came in here with an agenda.

I mean most are just having fun laughing at cod and I don't have a problem with that.

Okay cool, because that's what's happening.

But the people who have actual outrage about this silliness I do have a bit of an issue with.

This describes no one in this thread.

why did you bring it up

Because I love being a sarcastic asshole. Also i'm still a bit salty about it.

Your hyperbolic statements and word choice makes me think you were serious and not joking. But the few sentences you wrote really aren't enough for me to really know whether you're joking or not. I jumped the gun and made an incorrect assumption. Soz

That is a little surprising coming from somebody from France but I can ensure you it was mentioned in mine (Austria) in the same grade that covered sexuality in general. It was basically just a paragraph for each, just below the paragraph on Homosexuality. Interestingly enough even back then they already knew better than to refer to being gay as a mental illness.

I don't remember mine mentioning homosexuality either, but TBH I didn't pay much attention in biology class, I was too busy talking to the skeleton.

Sorry OP, but there is nothing about ruining roman numerals. The original pattern for Roman numerals used the symbols I, V. and X (1, 5, and 10) as simple tally marks. Each marker for 1 (I) added a unit value up to 5 (V), and was then added to (V) to make the numbers from 6 to 9:
I, II, III, IIII, V, VI, VII, VIII, VIIII, X.
This type of numbers was used in Ancient Rome (and in France during the reign of Louis XIV).
After implementation "Subtractive notation" for 4 and 9, ppl started using IV and IX.

You can find many web articles about it.

PS. Sorry for any possible misspelling. English is not my native.

I know this (probably more than most), but that doesn't make it any less tilting. As we are in the modern era and considering the adoption of said subractive usage, it's visually jarring. In your own post, you reveal that we retroactively apply it many cases, such as "Louis XIV." They may as well have used Olde English-- that too would have been "correct," but about as aesthetically pleasing as "IIII."

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, that's true.
But look at it from a different angle - if not this "IIII" You probably (and not only You, but probably the half of internet community) would not even pay such a big attention, just "well ok, new CoD incoming, cool (or not cool), period".
I'm not a fan of CoD series, but honestly i will follow this. And tbh this new logo looks quite ok, imho. :)

To me is more annoying the fact that many of those clocks (like the one in your example image) are not even consistent, they write 4 as IIII and 9 as IX.
