People are probably getting tired of me posting threads, but things are getting interesting and you're all interesting people, so here I am shamelessly ripping off somebody elses idea.

Boffo97's Games you love with low Metacritic scores thread got me thinking, and I have a bone to pick.

So, without further ado, what's the game that reviewers/everybody loves that you particularly hate, and why? Try and get games with a score of 80+.

My rant (feel free to ignore):

I absolutely hate every single Need for Speed game after the original Most Wanted. ESPECIALLY the Criterion ones. I would rather play ProStreet than be forced to go through the new Most Wanted's clunky handling, moving-brick-wall cops and dull voice acting over again.

With ProStreet, EA had reached a peak with Most Wanted (Carbon didn't do as well and nor should it), then A) tried to reach a market that Need for Speed didn't cater for (realistic GT simulators) and B) focused more on graphics so they could sell the game with eye candy. And I suspect in the wake of that, the few sane people at EA Redwood, later to become Black Box Studios, quit and left the rest of the team to fumble over some poor ideas for new games which have never reached the height that MW did. And now EA thinks that pulling Criterion off the Burnout franchise (REMEMBER, EA OWNS BURNOUT! CRITERION SHOULD STILL BE MAKING THE AWESOME BURNOUT GAMES) will inject some "new life" into the NFS franchise, when all they're doing is tazing a dead horse.

Every fucking AAA out there in this generation except for Borderlands 2.

Besides that, here's my list of games that most people here are probably getting tired of me bashing because I bash them every chance I get :p-

  • Don't Starve
  • Garry's Mod
  • TF2
  • Surgeon Sim 2013
  • CS:GO
  • Bioshock

(I don't actually know the score of any of those, I just know they're popular enough that they qualified to be listed)

I respect your opinion, but I seriously disagree on Bioshock. I do understand where you might be coming from on that one, but to me it's a bit like the whole Empire Strikes Back thing. There's a reason why it's so amazing and it goes beyond the gameplay and graphics itself. In a way, you could say Spec Ops: The Line is the spiritual successor to Bioshock.

Nonetheless, totally agree on TF2 and Surgeon Sim (pretty sure SS has a low score though). Never played Don't Starve or CS:GO, and Garry's Mod I don't see as a game but as a toolkit for when I need to pose things for drawing/animation but I don't quite know how to go about it.

Well Don't Starve is the worst game ever made, period. As for CS:GO, it's basically a much worse version of CS:S, which is a slightly worse version of CS 1.6

"Don't Starve is the worst game ever made" , I am sure your critical reasoning gives you a lot of merit for disliking those games.

Garry's mod - popularized the sandbox game idea, a game without no actual game. An idea that shouldn't work but became a somewhat easy to use toolbox to spring up so many mods of itself.

TF2 - The grandfather of mods, going from Quake to Half Life. From Half Life to an independent game. Great idea of keeping the old formula, albeit with some modifications like removing most of the throwable grenades. In recent times became an economy of it's own and relies just as much on metagaming and collecting new items than the actual game itself.

Don't Starve and Suregon Sim 2013 are indie games and as indie games go are more experimental and a lot more hit or miss on the liking factor.

CS:GO another iteration of the old formula, nothing more to say. I don't think many like it anyway, it's just some form of natural progression as certain people like some elements of the newer games. Those who couldn't bare playing CS 1.3-1.6 anymore moved on to CS:S, those who think CS:S feels old compared to the competition move on to CS:GO.

Bioshock, the spiritual successor to the System Shock series. A game that did justice to the action horror genre.

Out of 6 of the games, 3 are basically in such status you are probably disliking them to feel edgy.

2 of the games are basically indie games that make you a bastard for disliking them as they are some small companies or 1 man teams trying to make it and made something unique.

CS:GO as I said is just a rehash and disliking it is too mainstream anyway. It's like saying you hate the Cod series for what it has become. CS 1.6 to CS:GO is doing the Cod thing, only a little more subtle and less annoying way of releasing games every year. It's just a series that has zeroed in on it's main gameplay and as long as people keep buying they keep making them. They are not making the game for the people they hate, they don't need to incorporate those people. They are making the game for their market share and that is quite a big one anyway.

Well fuck, I can't hate a game because it's inde, even if it sucks! I mean, look at my library. I hate every indie there is!

Also, you just listed facts about the games, which doesn't change me hating them an makes no sense at all why you put them there.

As for the "It isn't bad because you dislike it", I guess it's too much to ask of peoplr to imply that it says "Don't Starve is, to me, the worst game ever made". I don't hate the CoD series, I actually own a couple of them. I am indifferent towards them, so glad you assumed I hate CoD but couldn't assume "to me".

Just accept I hate these games. Because believe it or not, System Shock being the predeccesor to Bioshock doesn'y change me hating bioshock, even if I love SS and SS. Think about what you accomplished by telling me useless facts that I already knew, putting me down for hating 2 indie games, and not making simple implications.

I'm sorry, I can't let go of-

"2 of the games are basically indie games that make you a bastard for disliking them as they are some small companies or 1 man teams trying to make it and made something unique."

So you're saying that I am a bastard for hating 2 shitty games because they are indie? I mean, really? So if I make the worst indie game ever, people who hate it are bastards, because I myself made it, right? That alone is fucking stupid, but then look who you're talking to here. I am a HUGE Indie fan. Go look at my library. Hell, look at my top 6 games of all time-

  • Castle Crashers
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • The Binding of Isaac
  • Mother 2
  • FTL: Faster Than Light
  • Super Hexagon

See that? 2/3 of that list is Indie. So before you call a extremely big Indie Game-goer a bastard for hating an indie game because it's indie, think about-

  • A. How is a game being indie a justification of bashing someone who dislikes a game?
  • B. There are bad games, even bad indie games.

The fact that YOU disliked 'Don't Starve' doesn't make it the worst game ever made.

No point bashing on a game just because the play style isn't what you're normally enjoying, some people like some people don't. I myself enjoyed it because it's bringing something new instead of just copying an old genre.

It also constantly annoys me that there are so many people who always need the "This is only in my opinion, I don't persecute people who do not share it!" disclaimer on every statement of an opinion, or otherwise have to tell you "that just because this is your opinion it doesn't make it so!".

When I or people like 6you7me say I hate something or that something is bad i obviously have no intention to force everybody to think the same. I very well know that this is only what I think and other people may think differntly! This should be common sense, but many people don't seem to get that and always have to start preaching.

You see, this is a forum. We can discuss and argue on opinion or call others out on it. If we just had a post after post after post of "I hate X Y A T S U K M E O U F " as a list for every post it wouldn't really be engaging.

I was more aiming at "Why did you name 2 indie games among your list".

Obviously I get that everything you type is your opinion, I mean who else would it be?

Same way I am calling him out on it is me expressing with a simple nudge going "Hey I think it was ok, care to explain more. Here is my reasoning X A S A I A I T and another A"

See? It's nothing to hate about. You could of just not replied at all but that is not fun. We are social we clash, we talk, we do other stuff. People are like that. No one is forcing everybody to think the same. It's just calling out on certain points on others to make them clarify their opinion. I don't see how that would change someones opinion.

He for example listed Don't Starve as the worst game ever made, I made him clarify why he thinks it's the worst thing ever made. I never got an answer though. I tied it with my first sentence that behind the scenes basically had a meaning of "Hey if you call an indie game worst game ever made without giving any reason at all then your opinions on other games seem derived from similar reasoning, that is - there is none".

If I simply listed:

  • Half Life 2
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Kerbal Space Program
  • Awesomenauts
  • The entire Counter Strike series
  • The entire Battlefield series
  • The entire Call of Duty series
  • The entire Sims series
  • The entire Final Fantasy series
  • The entire Civilization series
  • Sim City 2000
  • Sim Ants

without giving any reason at all it would just be, as you said, my opinion and it would be quite boring enough and a stupid list if I don't explain why. It would feel to others as I simply listed random games, as those people don't know my reasoning behind the list. That is my retort.

If we ever meet and you have a cat remind me to go "I hate your cat" and if you asked "Why?" I would go on a rant explaining "Why are you questioning me!?! It is my opinion! Do you want everyone to love your cat? God, this is what is wrong with people!"

Personally, I find all WW1/WW2 shooters pretty bland. CoD4 was a refreshing change and the story did something new for the time. And then the developers at Infinity Ward (or probably the publisher Activision) started to smoke the highest grade cocaine they could find and decided to ruin it all.

So, for me, CoD4 was the only good one in the franchise. Everything else has been run-of-the-mill.

I also never liked any of the CoD games to to be honest. I still remember the first ones and my friends showing them to me. I was so massively underwhelmned back then. After all CoD 1 and 2 are just your average scripted rat-maze WW2 Shooter. Once in a while I took a look at some of the modern installments of the series and didn't found much improving singleplayer wise. Turns out that the wave of crappy WW2 Shooters we had ("Medal of Honor" for example) in the first half of the 2000s at some point changed into a wave of "Desert Combat"-"America is good, russians and muslims ar evil" shooters. And while the gameplay over the time gave us new ways to personalize our weapons and strategys, the gameplay constantly remained the same. Pointless briefing, load Map, kill everything that moves, get praised, load next map,... Thanks, but no thanks.

The best in the series is suppost to be MW which we had to play at some LAN-Partys until I refused to join because the spawninthemiddleofthemap-dieinstantlybecausesomeoneisbehindyou gameplay of deathmatch and team-deathmatch always bores the shit out of me.

I am not disliking shooters in general. In SP I liked the STALKER games for instance, especially with mods, I liked the first Deus Ex, which still is one of my all time favourite games. Multiplayer-wise there were lots of very innovative HL1 Mods, allthough I don't like it myself and don't play it I get why people like Team Fortress 2. Also there are Games like Planetside 2 which put a whole new scope on multiplayer gaming. I even get Battlerfield (only played 1942 and 2). But CoD is one of the few franchises I absolutely can't stand even looking at it.

Not necessarily. I think a lot of people build negative opinions either because they haven't played them and they're jealous of their success or from what things they've seen of the game they look awful, but other times people genuinely hate the game.

You can't please everyone. That's the biggest lesson in this industry. And unfortunately, the only way to please the biggest audience is either by slaughtering Blizzard and then producing another zombifying-fantasy MMO, or producing awful copy and paste modern shooter games once a year. It's sad how much good stuff is left behind because people become so brutally enamored with CoD/WoW that they resort to death threats if you dare try to say their game is bad.

tl;dr True for lots of people, but even more people have good reasons to hate what they hate.

LA Noire is a sad case. I loved it, but not from a gameplay aspect because it wasn't actually that fun. It was the most successful Australian AAA game (one of the, if not the only Australian AAA games), and at the end of the day the developers studio was closed and they lost so much. Bioshock Infinite: Maybe the story was the only good part of it. As one who was working in the gaming business we were not allowed to tell "actually" how good and/or bad a game it was... The game was more than lame for me, she was almost allways standing in front of the door, throwing coins trough the walls etc. but eventually it was nothing like the first 2 games!
Dead Space 3: Again a sequel in case of the first 2 games it was lame...

Elizabeth's throwing stuff was pretty buggy, I agree with that (she somehow once threw ammo about 2kms and through a Handyman...). And yeah, I think the thing about Bioshock games is that story is the important part, and gameplay usually isn't enough to keep you going through (that's why Clash in the Sky feels like a waste to me).

I didn't enjoy Portal.
Portal 2 was more fun, because co-op can save any game.
But as for single player, in both games: the forced attempts at cheesy humour annoyed me and just made me cringe the whole time.
I would play it again without sound, but the puzzling itself didn't appeal to me that much either.

I have to be honest, and no disrespect, but you're the first person I've come across with that opinion. I felt they weren't the greatest games of all time, but I felt they were pretty damn close to perfect. Just goes to show that no game will appeal to everybody. Go individualism!

To this day, I still have no understand of how that game got any higher than 50. It just goes to show that reviewers ultimately don't care.

Do you honestly think they'd bother to fork out a large sum of money so as to bribe reviewers into giving a good review for a really niche game?

Not really, but this game is surely shit to have 96 Metascore.

You might not like turn based strategy as a genre then. Because those games are pretty much the paradigm of that genre.

For me, Portal series. It's fun to hear the comments, but the game is too easy and repetitive. It doesn't add nothing as a puzzle.

Yeah, although I don't think replaybility was on their mind when they first worked on it. I think they presumed nobody was really going to be interested in the game, so they made it a short little thing as a bonus for the Orange Box. Of course, people loved it, and that forced them to step it up in the sequel.

Not exactly. They already made a game with similar mechanics called Narbacular Drop. Then Valve got interested, picked them up and asked to make a game.
Kind of the same thing with gel mechanics in Portal 2. The other group of developers from Digipen released a game called Tag: The Power of Paint. Eventually they got picked up by Valve too and worked on Portal 2.
Actually, according to the developer's commentary Portal 2 wasn't supposed to have portals at all and have all new mechanics. Sadly, the idea was scrapped. I'd love to play that :(

Well, Portal 1 was really fun and short. Portal 2 was exactly the same thing, they just focused more on story and made the game much longer, but it gets repetitive really soon. I wish they added more content, like more guns (gravity gun?), maybe even some enemies now and then...

Mass Effect is one of my favourite series of all time, along with Dragon Age.

...and for me Mass Effect 3 was the best of the series, since it made me drawn in feels.

Same.
The ending could have been way better... I mean, too many questions left unanswered, but it wasn't this horrible. Hopefully BioWare learned their lesson and they're not making a 3-choices-ending ever again. It worked with Deus Ex Human Revolution for me, but not so much with Mass Effect.

I'm just a huge fan of the ME series.

I played through ME series twice. ME3 did feel like the weakest, which is sad because there were some really strong moments in the story let down by some of the rest of it.

This. I wanted to like ME3. Maybe it was too buggy at the release, maybe I was in a wrong mood, but I didn't really like it. And the ending didn't help either. Maybe I should replay it later.

It was just another rat-maze type shooter with a bad story like there were hundreds in the 90s and early 2000s. There is almost no improvement at all to the first Half Life. OK, there was the gravity gun, but basing an entire game around a physics gimmick like that... Valve got away with it because they were the first, if any other physics engine developers made a game like that now they would be ridiculed. On the other hand... dumb shooters like COD are still en vogue, a Half Life 3 should fit in nicely.

Spec Ops: The Line - Many people say it has a good story, but I totally disagree. This game leaves you absolutely no other choice then to shoot everything that moves and then points a finger at you... Like it wants to say: "Shame on you, so many innocent people..." as if you had any other choice, except to quit this clay-pigeon shooting game. Seriously, it's even worse than COD!

Deus Ex: HR - Not really hating it. It has a good story, but playing stealth is a pain in the a... because of the bad controls.
Crysis - I think we all played it just because of the graphics. The game was really boring...yaaaawn

On the subject of Spec Ops: The Line, that's kind of the point. It's a "Deconstruction" (search up Deconstruction TvTropes in google). It's actually superb when you realise just what it was trying to say and how it did it. I totally get where you're coming from and for a while I felt the same way, but once I was informed I took a whole new perspective on it and loved it.

I agree on DXHR, the controls and stealth needed a definite work out.

I have to agree on Spec Ops. I wasn't even sure what to expect but they were totally phoning it in. On top of that, it's like someone flashing you pictures of sad-looking kittens and asking "Do you feel upset yet?" repeatedly. It's hard to have much emotional or personal impact when it's obviously trying so hard to squeeze it out of you. Kind of like a horror that bombards you with non-stop screamers and startle-scares. Not only does it desensitise you, it makes you kind of feel it's sabotaging its own mood, like a classical piano player who refuses to play soft notes, instead hoping that being nothing but loud and dramatic has a better chance of moving you.

At least it tried.

Actually, the whole point was to distance you from the character. Hell, you even notice Walker hates himself by the end. Everything you go through turns him more and more into a monster and the only way to have "won" the game was to stop playing early onwards.

Appeal to hypocrisy is a logical fallacy.

Now read that entire sentence again will you. :)

Hypocrisy itself isn't a fallacy, appealing to hypocrisy is.

As you as a fine gentlemen can see I was only calling him one, not basing any argument on it against him.

The word linguistically has a meaning and if those meanings are ticked you can call someone by that. A word can't really be a fallacy, an act of using one wrong can be.

Let me give you an example by that very same wiki page:

"What fancy headgear you women wear" says a guy with fancy headgear.

In this case the guy is right as the women has fancy headgear and it does not cancel out his argument.

He is still a hypocrite be his argument valid or not. It's if you based your argument on such reasoning that would be wrong.

Basically if you went "Ban fancy headgear!" while wearing fancy headgear it wouldn't be valid to say "Hey, you wear it yourself!" as he is arguing for a ban of fancy headgear wearing it or not.

That guy would still be a hypocrite as he is arguing against something he wears but his argument wouldn't be less valid. You see, same way SuperSimk64 would still be an hypocrite for hating on hate topics. I am not basing any argument on the issue. :)

I am sure sure appealing to wrong logical fallacies is at the least a red herring fallacy trying to derive this off rails. ;)

let me quote the full phrase: "appeal to hypocrisy, is a logical fallacy that attempts to discredit the opponent's position by asserting the opponent's failure to act consistently in accordance with that position"

so IF you are appealing to hypocrisy in the hope that this will discredit his view of haters topics :) that is indeed a logical fallacy, otherwise why would you need the statement that he is a hypocrite?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why would I need the statement that he is a hypocrite? Because he is one.

His position is just as true being a hypocrite or not. It has nothing to do with it.

My statement doesn't deal with weighing in on an opinion if his right or wrong in doing so, I simply call him a hypocrite for hating haters. Read my original reply again. Bottom line is I am right as you are still trying to pull a red herring out of this. ;)

You are mixing up appealing to hypocrisy with simply calling someone a hypocrite. You see I explain why I consider him a hypocrite with the "you hate haters but hate yourself" but in no way do I for once make his original claim less valid of hating hate threads. His position is just as valid as it was before.

GTA IV, it was a boring world with a story that didn't appeal to me one bit, stopped playing at about 15% completion I think.
Bioshock 1 & 2 loved the world and story (of the first especially) but I could not stand any of the gameplay, ended up just watching a playthrough
Dead Space series somehow I never got into the controls properly and put the games down every time while still wanting to play it. Ended up watching some playthroughs, but after the mess that 3 was, I won't come near that series again

and probably more, but I don't really remember games I don't like

I can't really think of anything that I actually hate but here are some I dislike:
Dota 2
Spelunky - I didn't hate or dislike it, but it did annoy me at times.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - This is the only CoD (so far) that I couldn't get into story wise. I honestly can't remember how far into the campaign I was.
There aren't many games that I hate, I mainly just get annoyed and frustrated with them.
