I made myself a peanut butter & jelly sandwich for lunch today. A little while later, my sister decided she wanted one as well. As she was making her sandwich, she yelled out "Why is there peanut butter in the jelly?!" The answer is that I use the same knife for both containers -- once I'm done spreading the peanut butter, I use the same knife to scoop and spread the jelly. Of course a small amount of peanut butter gets into the jelly container.

According to her, this is a crime against humanity. She says that one must use a spoon to get the jelly out of its jar, to avoid the hideous possibility of cross-contamination.

So now I am curious: how do you make a PB&J?

How do you make a PB&J?

Use the same knife in both containers
Use a knife for the peanut butter and a spoon for the jelly
None of the above // I don't eat PB&J // I'm allergic to peanuts // Potatoes are better

No cross contamination please. In anything. We have to use that knife too.

But peanut butter and jelly together is awesome!

If there was a way to combine them into a single product, I'd be all over that.

Also, peanut butter and honey. This avoids your conundrum.

One time, when I was living alone, I hated to wash dishes so eventually all of them got dirty. No knifes, no spoons and I wanted a jelly sandwich. What to do? Of course I said fuck it and used my index finger to grab jelly and put it on the bread. Yeah...not my proudest moments.

Heh, next time lick the knife clean after putting the peanut butter on. Then use it to spread the jelly. She'll never know the difference.

Using two utensils is the "polite way." That is to say, it is the way of people who are fussy and overly concerned about appearances. Cross-contamination is the "lazy way." That is to say, it is the way of people who are unconcerned about how their actions affect others. The main point is to avoid cross-contamination as both the peanut-butter jar and the jelly jar are source containers which will be used repeatedly by whomever needs them. If you're going to use the same utensil (which is fine), you want to clean it before you switch containers. That takes about two seconds if you have a sink and water.

I guess I am just used to living alone. (My sister living with me is a temporary situation).

And apparently someone found my practice so disgusting that it warranted a blacklist, LOL

One of the benefits of living alone is that it's your place and you don't have to worry about affecting non-existent house-mates. )

The reason to use a spoon for the jelly is to avoid the watery mess that forms in the jelly jar after repeated uses of a knife. The world is full of savages. :D

Them savages like to see the jelly bleed. D

On a more serious note, there's nothing in the jelly jar that wasn't there before if the utensil you use is clean.

Use the knife in the jelly first (the jelly is easier to wipe off than peanut butter), then wipe the knife on the second slice of bread to get rid of the jelly. Then you can use the knife in the peanut butter without contamination.

+1, I care enough about cross contamination to clean off the knife on the slice of bread but not enough to get a new knife or to actually wash the knife :p

Actually I found this to be probably the best way without cross contaminating each jar. 1) take knife to PB jar and spread 2) take jelly jar and kinda shake at a 75 degree angle to get enough out and then spread. Only used 1 knife and no jelly in PB jar and no PB in the jelly jar!

I use a knife to get the jelly out. Then I wipe the knife on a napkin and use the same knife on the peanut butter. I guess I'm guilty of cross contamination :P

PB&J alone is so boring. PB goes well with chocolate (like Reese's products), banana and bacon (Elvis Presley's fav), or marshmallow (fluffernutter). What you should do is slice a jelly donut in half and add some peanut butter, marshmallow fluff, chocolate sauce, banana and bacon inside. If you don't do bacon, feel free to replace it with an unhealthy kosher/halal/vegan-friendly alternative. Also, use the same knife on everything!
