To the moon is such a classic. Recommend it very much as well :)

Seconded. Such a great concept and story. It really tugs on the heart strings. It's the reason I haven't given up on RPG maker games yet.

I came here to recommend To the Moon, but knew in my heart it had already been said. It's a very good game with a superb soundtrack.

Spiritfarer Has some very strong emotional moments if you don't mind the long, grindy gameplay
Before Your Eyes
The Town of Light

Can't really make a VN that's more about death and illness than this series.

After playing the game and spending 100h+ ingame listening to the soundtrack, I absolutely agree.

Loved it, such a wholesome, emotional and kind fairy-tale.

Just played If Found and it's a bit of a trip to the dark side but a great one.
And honestly, the gameplay is the coolest I have seen in a visual novel. It keeps you engaged and connected with the story instead of just clicking through.

What Remains of Edith Finch. It's a sad game all around, but that bathtub sequence broke me

Frankly, hated that sequence, it needs a trigger warning. I was basically replacing a mother for my tiny niece back when the game was released, and they just went ahead and showed me a scenario of an absolute horror. I mean, I'm fine with any kind of on-screen gore, but this? Also, they are really weird about the subject of guilt. Frankly, any sane person would kill themselves after something like that, but the mother is somehow not responsible, seriously?

The House in Fata Morgana would be my number one recommendation.

I'd say it has the most impactful storyline I've experienced in a game. And it has plenty of sad moments.

Thanks, it's probably time for me to stop ignoring everything anime and finally admit that good stories may actually exist among the pile of the cringe and the phony (I absolutely loved OPUS: Echo of Starsong, after all). I think I'll give this one a try. BTW, what about the second game? Did you enjoy it as much as the first one?

I haven't played the second game yet.

I think there's supposed to be a spinoff game that was released recently. I think it uses the same characters but the story is supposed to be different.

Hey, just wanted to say thank you for the recommendation. Currently playing The House in Fata Morgana, and I'm absolutely hooked.

Glad you're enjoying it!

It was hard to put it down when I was playing it, so I absolutely understand.

+42. The game is long, and has some odd pacing, but it also has many unforgettable dramatic scenes, and an incredible soundtrack. "Impactful" is a very very appropriate word. The best game I played this year so far (and I played about 40 of them).

So many really awesome games in this thread, I'm going to follow it. I think I'll add OPUS series to the list of recommendations: while the first two games (The Day We Found Earth and Rocket of Whispers) are both warm and sad, but still are ordinary good games, last year's Echo of Starsong is a full-scale masterpiece and is a must-play for anyone who's into emotional and well-written stories. And I can promise you a nice cathartic cry in the end.

Also, just reminding that To The Moon is only the first part in the series: several tiny games and two big ones were released later.

Also: wild guess but I think you're crossing my current hometown regularly to get to and from the town where I was born. Hope you like it there ^^

Ah, I see. Yeah, it has that rare large but almost inner city forest. I lived right next to that as a kid. My current hometown is about halfway on your trip home. A bit smaller but still nice here.

One of my favourite games of all time. I played it twice in a row (to try a couple of different things). Excellent choice!

DEFINTELY 18+:
A vast multitude of visual novels are prolonged excuses to see cartoon people screwing, and this is no exception. But Acting Lessons will make you cry at the end.

Clannad was put above. Their other games are also a good choice like planetarian the reverie of a little planet
Haven't done Harmonia but that also sounds like another one of their sad games
