Hey fellow SG users!

Tomorrow a mate of mine is moving in with me for a while, so I've been looking into some co-op games we can play together without having to purchase it on both our accounts.
Any suggestions are welcome as long as the game supports couch co-op (splitscreen).
I've tried searching for it on steam but due to the lack of a proper filter i wasn't able to find any, it doesn't really matter what type of game it is, as long as it's not a puzzle game and it doesn't even have to be on steam.

-edit- Thanks a lot everyone, got a lot of replies in a short amount of times so i'm still looking into each title one by one, all your recommendations are much appreciated.

Aren't those titles intended for kids?
Don't get me wrong, i still love me some Pokemon and stuff like that, but for co-op i would prefer the game to be really difficult, like Killing Floor for instance, the Lego games look really casual to me but I haven't tried them so i'm just guessing.

if you want to just finish missions then yep Lego games are casual and easy, but if you're trying collect all the golden, red brciks and other secrets then it's a challenge + it's tons of fun

They're slightly puzzle-like, and because of that you're sometimes running around in circles not knowing what to do next. I wouldn't say they're hard, considering the fact that you can die as much as you want, it just affects your score, but they're still great fun, and no, you don't have to be a kid to enjoy them xD

They are most definitely casual, but as Truepicasso said, they are also lots of fun. Maybe see if you can pick just one of them up on the cheap through trading or if a deal pops up, see what you think. I'd recommend them to all gamers, young and old.

Will give it a try then, judging by the amount of people I've seen talking about this game (in the most positive way possible) it must be a lot of fun, and it wouldn't be the first time I end up liking a game that i would have never tried if it wasn't for all the recommendations.

Castle Crashers, Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe, Beat Hazard, Broforce that's available as an early build for free currently... ones that come to mind at the moment

Edit: Capsized and Trine/Trine 2, Magicka

Thanks, have both shank 2 and magicka in my account but didn't know they both supported local co-op, this might also explain why i didn't enjoy them while playing solo.

BROFORCE!

Broforce is a hyperviolent action platform game. It features 90′s blockbuster movie action heroes making up the Broforce team.

This line has sparked my interest for this game, everything is better with 90's action heroes in it!
Looks like a lot of fun, will give it a try, thanks.

Rock of Ages. THough I wouldn't purchase it for $10. The game is pretty stupid and fun, but only for a short while. It's definitely worth 75% off the next time it goes on sale, though.

Also, while it's not on Steam, you should definitely go here and download Mari0 for free. It's Mario with Portal guns, and it supports up to 4 players on the same screen. The game is a blast with multiple people.

EDIT: Mari0 has hats.

You forgot to mention it has hats! how could you forget to mention such an important and game changing feature!
In all seriousness though, looks like it should be entertaining for a while, will give it a try, thanks.

And the more people you have, the better, if you can get anyone else other than just you and your friend. Four people with portal guns becomes absolute chaos.

I only have 2 controllers though, unless my mate still has his old 360 controllers, sounds like a lot of fun though.

One person can also use the mouse and keyboard. Which is really the easiest way (so call dibs on mouse and keyboard). The controller isn't too bad, but it is definitely a little harder to aim.

It would be, if i didn't use my armrest as a mousepad :P

My brother always did that. I never got used to it, but he never seemed to have any problem aiming when we played. Although, he also used an inverted scheme on any game when using a controller. Which makes me question everything I know about him. What a weirdo.

I'm familiar with the site, the only problem is that it isn't a complete list since i haven't seen games like fifa 13 for example while browsing all local co-op games.

Dungeon Defenders have great couch coop. Portal 2 is also good. Resident Evil 6 should have splitscreen. Also, it's possible to make Borderlands 1 and 2 run on splitscreen, though I'm not sure if it's possible with Steam version.

Borderlands is exactly the type of game that would be perfect for co-op, i'll be sure to look into that, i just hope it doesn't mean that i have to modify core files and what not, thanks a lot for the tip.

I think there was a tool, which did all the job for you. It basically runs Borderlands multiple times and puts their windows next to each other. It should be possible to play with up to 4 players.

Ooh i think I've seen a vid of that being done with Killzone on a windows o.s. too bad it won't allow you to play in fullscreen anymore but i guess it won't take too long to get used to that.
I really don't get why devs don't implement this feature in games that do have this function on consoles, as if we're still living in the 90's and everyone who uses a pc is sitting behind a desk or something.

I was just in search of this same thing a few days ago. Have settled in with Sega Racing Transformed (mario kart-esque), Castles Crashers, and Monaco (stealthy action strategy). We tried Shank too but it got repetitive fast as unlocks are only for single player I guess?

How is Sega Racing? I wanted to pick it up during summer sale, but I cant get two ps3 controllers to work, so I did not buy it. If you think its good, I might get it at a later discount and work on the controller problem.

Mhh...gotta go through my steam library, I try to leave out the games which have been posted already:

  • Any Worms game
  • Street Fighter X Tekken or any other beat em up
  • Any Civ game in hotseat mode
  • Borderlands 2 has a splitscreen coop workaround
  • Serious Sam games have splitscreen coop
  • Rayman Origins is just like the NSMB on the Nintendo consoles in multiplayer
  • Portal 2, haven't tried it in splitscreen yet, but can be massive fun due to the workshop
  • Magicka
  • Magic 2014 or previous have some local multiplayer modes
  • Dungeon Siege 3, but I have only played it like 10 minutes, local coop works though
  • Dungeon Defenders
  • Awesomenauts

Also Clonk. I had so much fun playing it with friends in my past. The newest OpenClonk should have local splitscreen. Grab that here [http://www.openclonk.org/]

This is all what comes into my mind. Most of these games are really awesome in multiplayer/coop.

edit: Eh...seems like I needed too much time for that, many of these games have been mentioned already.

+1 for Serious Same, recently I had 3 people over and we decided to scavenge the house for spare keyboards and mice, and managed to find enough for all of us to play at once :D

I really appreciate the effort you've put into that list, thanks a lot for that!
That being said, I didn't even know there was a tekken game on steam, and since i loved playing tekken 5 vs friends on the PS2 some years ago i'm sure i'll love this one too, will definitely pick that one up.
