I was discussing this with a friend, and it was sort of difficult to find a successful and good example where either of these existed, despite all of the potential. Several examples are perhaps: Doom, Resident Evil, Walking Dead, but were they really good?

  • Telltale games Walking Dead was good, but it was really just a point-and-click adventure.
  • Anyone remember older AvP games? I think they were decent and the films got pretty popular especially the originals.

Any good examples?

The Walking Dead game comes from the graphic novel.

Edit: Many "old school" movie licensed games were good.

not sure what old school games those would be.. most of the ones i remember got rushed to hitch a ride on the movies fame and it showed.

Chronicles of Riddick was quite nice imo

Which isn't based on a movie. Also, which game he refers to doesn't have any relevance to the non-existence of a movie.

Why has no one mentioned Wreck-It Ralph yet??? I just saw it this weekend, and it was incredible! The best videogame-related movei I've ever seen! Sure, it's not a video game, but it's a cool love letter to gamers everywhere.

Oh, we're counting movies just based on video games in general? In that case, I might change my answer to video game inspired movies...

I had the unfortunate luck of own that game. Then I went and tracked down an unburied copy purely for novelty reasons. Even broke the board for it can't play. Yes it's worthless in more ways than one, but it will never harm another Atari ever again

Movies based on videogames have always been awful. I can't think of a single notable exception.

Games based on movies can be good. AvP games come to mind. Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena was very good. The new Ghostbusters game seemed to be good (never played it myself)

Already on the forum: http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/MmEb9/do-you-know-any-good-games-based-on-movies
Also Telltale's game is based on Robert Kirkman's original comic books, not some movie.
AvP games are mediocore at best. Resident Evil movies are terrible, so is Doom. People watch them for how dumb they are.
Those weren't good examples. There is not much room for discussion either, you can count good movie tie-ins on your hands and they pop up from your search engine.

I thought the Postal movie was great. Yes it was made by the Devil, yes it wasn't exactly like the games, but to me it captured the atmosphere of the games perfectly. Same with Tekken and the Mortal Kombat and Silent Hill movies. As for games, there ARE a few gems, though you really have to search for them. I haven't found them though and goddammit I have been searching hard.

There has yet to be made a good movie based around a video game.Maybe once a director/writter with actual talent and passion for the material comes up maybe then we'll get one.Until then it's all poo straight from the biggest hacks in hollywood and everywhere else.
