PETA have slammed the inclusion of whaling in Assassins Creed IV.

Obviously this isn't the sort of acceptable whaling that goes on nowadays (solely for scientific research), but the mean 18th century sort, that was all about cruelty and making money.

Where should the line of acceptability be drawn in games? Is it acceptable to kill rats? Or whales? Or civilians in an airport?

You can complete the game without killing any animal, I believe (still haven't completed it), if you want to be limited to carry 1 weapon, 3 syringes, 16 items and a wallet that can only hold $1000 when most weapons cost way more than that.

A lot of the stuff that seems to make it big from P.E.T.A. seems the be the stupidest stuff. While yes doing that kind of whaling in current times is "unethical, and just plain wrong" its a game dang it peta... why do they got to try and ruin games? I mean heck the tooki suit they claim that mario rips off the animals... have they even played the game? He gets its from a dang leaf. Also the pokemon game they did? That one is just down right a low blow. while yes their are some that dont take care of their pokemon but if they watched ANY of the series they would see the first few if not the first episode ash actually risks his life to SAVE pikachu. I think Peta needs to do a little more research on their games before they assume things.

TL:DR - PETA being stupid usual, they havent researched thier games... move on.

Soo, they've donated to whale boat attackers, protested against KFC and The Beef Industry and have ties to environmentalist groups persecuted by the FBI.

Is that poster supposed to make me hate them or like them?

Anyway, I'd like to see more data than pure numbers on the killed animals. How many of those are cases of untreatable diseases? What are the actual criteria for euthanasia?

And I'd like to see a proper source on those budget claims. If true, that would be more than enough to condemn the entire organization.

As for AC4, I agree with their position. Historical accuracy is a terrible excuse for games, especially that particular series. Simulating whaling is about as bad as simulating a school shooting or something of the sort.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i agree with some sources, except the last part, why it is a terrible excuse?, in 17 whaling was a big thing and it was mostly done to get resources, you know what every other predator does? plus its pixelated, no whales is getting hurt or damaged, ann im sure 80% of the people who will play ac4 are not stupid enough to doit in real life and the other 19% are just kiddies who dont have the sources to even get close to doit, whaling and school shooting in games dont get even close, the first one is made because they needed the meat and the resources from the whales and the second one is made because they are sick fucks.

I agree with you Catnip. Animals at least are loyal and don't start wars on humanity. Plus mean people suck. And those mean people that suck create mean animals whether they be pets or animals in general. If you kill an animal for sport, you deserve to be shot for sport. If you kill an animal for food, that's survival. Killing animals in a game is in a game. Though I admit to getting tired of killing wolves in Majesty 2. I hated doing it and it was pointless and frustrating.

saw some bird population study in texas said a well fed indoor outdoor cat in the suburbs guts on average 6 songbirds or chipmunks a day for literally no reason(most of them slowly so it can play with them before they die) eats maybe 1.5, brings one home as a gift and leaves the rest there to rot. the things are like that guy from saw. how is that about survival?

cats should be leashed or kept inside, they decimate the environment and one of them nearly killed my pet rabbit when I was 9, only reason it didn't is I heard her scream and punted the little demon(well threw it over my shoulder at a tree technically(it lived)). my neighbor was pissed but fuck him.

So if they would whore for media it would at least be on their own site, too. To me this is just ridiculous and probably bad journalism.

Because that leads to problems also but the thing is that other organizations that rescue animals also do what Peta does but not to such a large extent and some don't perform euthanasia or kill animals at all, those are the no kill shelters, Peta is pretty much the worst though with the kill rate pretty much over 90% in most years...

1 decade ago

I think that of all the animal cruelty in games to pick, the whaling is the least important. It is in 18-something. It was normal then and as far as I know, there were enough whales at that time to go around. Sure, it is cruel to the big guys of the sea, but it is not (completely) senseless cruelty that occurs for no reason. Unlike the oppertunity gamers get to kill farm animals and domestic animals in some games.

Or those hunting games. I think that would be a bigger issue for PETA, because when you play those games, you really make a attempt to bring flourishing species closer to extinction, just 'cause you like shooting them.

True, but we're talking about another time period where it was "normal" and about a game. If you go back in history people did a lot of questionable stuff, to put it mildly. From their perspective it was normal to hunt whales as a resource. Just like they did with other animals, in the sea and on the land.

The random killing of animals in games is for no other reason then "because I can" and "fun". Whales would be used for resources (and yes, it remains horrific how the whales suffer) and it is just there to show a part of history of that time, while a player, e.g., kicking the dog in Haunting Ground or killing chickens in Skyrim is just plain cruelty for fun and has no context to it.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The problem is that the same rules aren't applied to everything. In some periods of history it was normal for men to beat their wives. Throughout a lot of history it was normal for soldiers to rape as much as they wanted when capturing an enemy settlement. That doesn't mean we get to do those things in games, or that we should.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

surely we dont, but they are doing in for the history accuracy, and whaling like i said before, was an important thing to do, since mostly the resources they gave were preety usefull for a lot of sea travelers and other people, it was still questionable, but we cant change history.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why not? Such actions should not be excluded from any depiction of an appropriate time period. Truth prevail your false sense or morality.
Incidentally, mane men still think it's their God given right to beat up their wives, and soldiers still rape people after capturing an enemy settlement.
