Thre are people that die playing, or even kill their own children, or break the TV.
There are different "wastes of time", films, videogames, sports, books, boardgames, etc. The main reason is having fun, and some people have fun with some of them and just hate others. But as long as they make some people fun, they are not a waste of time, imho.
You are fine and ok with the injury risk, and Im OK with that argument. But cant share your opinion about the waste of time, for the reasons I have said.

I'm a huge fan of college football. I just can't get into NFL, because there aren't any local teams and I have problems sustaining an interest without someone to root for. I've also slowly been getting into soccer. We have a MLS team, so that helped my aforementioned problem, and because I work nights, I had plenty of time to sit around and watch my first World Cup.

I doubt it, people will watch NFL, wonder why its so goddamn slow with them taking a break every couple of minutes, get bored and go watch a game where they actually play without having to rest so often (pretty much ANY other code of football).

I'm in the UK and got into it in at around the age of 10, liked it during my teens before drifting away from the sport once I got to about 20. No specific reason why I stopped watching, other interests just took over.
Played a bit of flag football from the ages of 17-18 as we were too poor to buy the equipment to play proper kitted-football and got to the final of the national championships in the first season. Sounds inpressive but there were only 8 teams in the country :p Second year there were more and we didn't make the playoffs.
Also went to a couple of NFL Europe games, down to London to watch the London Monarchs and up to Edinburgh to watch the Scottish Claymores. Played in a little English allstars vs. Scottish allstars flag football game as part of the pre-game entertainment at one of the Scottish Claymores games too. Fun times.
In the NFL I liked Green Bay.

My interest in Football started with Madden 92 on the Sega Genesis. After that i started watching Football and even played it for a few years. I am from Germany. I also watch Basketball and Baseball. Our Football (Soccer) stays my favorite sports tho :P

i want to stay to my (closest)home team the Dallas Cowyboys and let me tell you, they were really hard to support these last three years that i had been watching them. It seems to be looking up though, will actually allow me to watch some FOOTBALL!!!

Same for the Ravens fan and college football. I'm a Vikings fan too. I also play varsity basketball and soccer for my high school. With football I just play backyard, don't really like playing it in leagues.

RavensNation :D Living in Germany and following AF since the NFL tried to establish a league here. So first I was a fan of Frankfurt Galaxy and after the League failed I watched the Ravens. I think I like purple :D So since 2002 I dont missed a SuperBowl and watched nearly 90% of the playoff matches. But its hard to watch, because here they come at 2:15am
