I did some research (read the first paragraph on wiki) and it says this:
Holland is a region and former province located on the western coast of the Netherlands. The term Holland is also frequently used as a pars pro toto to refer to the whole of the country of the Netherlands. This usage is generally accepted, but it is disliked by part of the Dutch population, especially in the other parts of the Netherlands.

No, it's different... You were right about saying it's just a part of Netherlands (two provinces, to be precise, which are the most crowded and basically contain every single thing you might have heard about in Netherlands).
Oh, and I'm from Belgium.

Yup. That's why there's so many people speaking portuguese in South America and Africa.
Hell, at a certain point, Portugal and Spain signed a treaty to divide the world in halves, one for each (look up the Treaty of Tordesillas). We also have the dubious honor of being the last colonial power to leave Africa, as the decolonization only happened after the revolution of 1974.

The history of all world and all civilizations affects us all, that's bad some educational system who doesn't think like that. :/

That thing about dividing the world, was only about the seas/oceans wasn't it?

Not really. It was an agreement in which Portugal and Spain (Castilla and Aragon at the time, really) mutually recognized the right of Spain to claim as theirs all lands discovered west of a meridian situated a few hundred miles west of the Cape Verde archipelago, and the right of Portugal to claim as its own any territories situated East of the same meridian. The fact that said meridian leaves a good part of modern-day Brazil to the east is one of the arguments used to support the theory that the Portuguese knew about South America before its official discovery.

Yes, that's right. Macau was, in fact, the last territory to cease to be part of the Portuguese "empire" (it was really not an empire by then), in 1999, when it was returned to Chinese admnistration as a Special Admnistrative Region.

Well, I'm a Taiwanese and I know that's not exactly true.
The Spanish occupation of Taipei (a part of northern Taiwan) is 1626-1642, and the Dutch had controlled the southern half of the Taiwan 1624-1662, while Portugal has never actually had Taiwan.

You could say Portugal was something so small yet powerfull and rich to the point of standing on top back in those times of discovery. Nowadays it's a small and vastly weak country, it's nothing but a mere shadow of what it used to be once.
All of this because of the bad lideration we have had in the past few decades and the lack of scientific/technological progress compared to other countries. Most of our wealth was probably from the seas, something we stopped exploring in the latest centuries. We have a connection with the sea, it was what made this country great in the past.
To get it back up to what it used to be like back in the days it would need alot of investing and kicking everyone from the politics, too many of them for such a small country, we only need a critical few that could be trusted.
Which is something i never see happening unless the civilization itself makes a riot that ends up changing things drastically (like when portugal turned republican, last king was assassinated putting an end to democracy).
Also, a good example on one's wealth can be, look at luxemburg and switzerland, both small countries similiar to portugal, what made them successfull was the people liderating the country, Portugal could have ended up in a similiar fashion, except it won't for another few decades or centuries, all thanks to the people on top stealing the poor in order for them to pay off their mansions, high quality technology and vehicles and other stuff of the likes, ala "life of a king", except we have too many of those here nowadays.
