What I think they should do is allow a person to show all 5 levels of a badge if they want, but have it still just count as 1 badge for Badge Collecting purposes. That way Valve can't say that it's a way of expanding their badge count by way of an exploit.

It's not really a solution, when someone will have to pay again to upgrade badges.
So it's laziness from Valve side to not want to change it. They introduced animated profile themes, but they can't make such small change? xD

They won't even reset the badge progress. I wanted the level 2 warband badge, but crafted it up to 5 thinking I can feature any of those pictures to my profile. Obviously, I was in the same situation as you. Contacted steam support, got a response unrelated to my question and had to live with it. Now I like the level 5 badge. ^^

Looks like you have to, but choosing which one to display would be a nice option, but i don't believe steam would even give a single though about doing that.

That's why I will never upgrade my 4th level badge from Final Slam 2. Good that I knew about this bullshit from valve before I started to craft them, otherwise I would end up with unusable and ugly badge >_<

If you craft the foil it takes the place of the level 5 badge (if you are referring to the spot on your profile that shows the game progress with your current badge); If not I feel your pain. There are so many that I just stop at a certain level because I prefer the other images of the badges.

That actually may be, since the badge ID is still associated with the account: so if 'set: profile badge' doesn't auto-upgrade to higher badge ranks, it ought be possible to send it data for the other badges through DOM-edit/scripting.

Back when the whole trading cards/badges started I remember there was a topic somewhere on steam community with all the badges listed. But then there were like 40 games with badges available. I guess it's hard to keep track of all the badges now, but maybe some kind, lunatic soul is still doing it.

Finding badge listings is usually super easy- several sites do it. That doesn't help you a spit when the crafting rules themselves are counter-intuitive, user-sabotaging garbage.

yes, I know. but it takes only one time to learn. the first time I crafted the 2nd level of a badge I realized there wouldn't be 2 badges from the same game on my profile. So I'd just check the list for all the badges and stop whenever it fits me.
