Hours upon hours. Mods that modify gameplay and UI, the obligatory nude mods and multiple romance mods, and even story mods.

I love New Vegas Vanilla to desth, but the most fun I had was playing a modded New Vegas with a sixty-four long modded additional story as a bounty hunter which ended up in a duel one-to-one in a snowy graveyard

Yeah, because of it I didn't bother to mod really. Changing characters is not my thing at all. I would probably do it if I don't like a character I interact with very much that is a main one or something.

Vanilla first most of the time.
If I find something obviously broken, or something that obviously can be improved on, I may mod it as soon as I can. Bigger FOV, better UI.
I think things like Skyrim's SkyUI, or Fallout New Vegas' Nevada Skies (Skybox and weather mod) are mods that I actively recommend even on the first try, they just make the game better.

Definitely no gameplay/mechanics-changing mods on first play, and I often have trouble with those even later on.

Gameplay mods can really break the gaming experience. Sometimes I add them and because of that it affects my game to the point it crashes. Sometimes enjoying the game is what matters.

Oh, definitely for other things. I'm a graphic designer for many many years. My current macbook pro is probably older than my Steam account. Haha!

A guy was trolling me on Steam when I asked a question in a game's forums about the mac version. He was like "you don't buy a mac to game" and was mocking me for being rich and stupid. I'm def not rich. XD. Then I got a warning from Steam for my retort "no one is stupid enough to buy a mac as a gaming computer, most of us just own them already." That was seen as a toxic comment apparently. lmao.

Mods, i was playing trough Titan Quest and didn't install any mods and kinda regret that, the most popular mod is one that doubles XP and now im at the last boss and its impossible for my character, literally one hit and im dead, so i guess i have to grind XP.

There are a few tools that you can use to get to beat that, but you have to get your hands dirty. I'd recommend WeMod to get it for your game and beat that boss if you want to beat the boss.

Modding is just one of the reasons I love to game on PC. That being said, I don't rush off to mod every game I play. I like to mod specific games I really like.

I just finished another patrol in LSPDFR for GTA V. That mod is incredible and is hands down my most favorite of this year. What's even more great about it is that I can add even more plugins, scripts and really customize the experience however I see fit. I would also love to check out other mods for GTA V. I would mostly look for gameplay expanding mods.

With Black Mesa (which is my GOTY for 2021), I want to check out some custom maps mainly and see if there are some mods that improve an already phenomenal game. But I doubt I would install any of those. I love the main game as it is, so I would mostly play with custom maps.

Skyrim. Now there is an odd one. I played Skyrim since the first day it was released. And as silly as this might sound, I never modded that game. But I also never finished my first playthrough. So I transferred my save to SE and installed some quality of life mods. I didn't go too crazy since I didn't want to break my game. So I finally finished the game and I still have some side stuff to do. But once a mod, Legacy of the Dragoborn, releases a new massive update they've been working on for a few years I will start with a new playthrough with a lot more mods. I mostly look for mods that make the game more enjoyable to play. Anything, from graphics, gameplay, bugfixes. But my rule is to enhance the Vanilla experience and not transform Skyrim into a different game. That being said, I would love to play Enderal one day.

Fallout 4 I modded to death since the very beginning. First time modding a Bethesda game and somehow I didn't break my save. Yet... :) I have around 300 mods installed and the game is somehow running pretty stable. But I decided to not add anymore mods. I will complete this first playthrough (some day... xD) and then I will look into new mods that have arrived on Nexus. The rule of which mods I install for Fallout 4 is pretty much the same I use for Skyrim, main goal is to enhance the Vanilla experience.

Minecraft. Oh my... That game is a true treasure trove when it comes to mods. You can transform the game into whatever you want really. I"m currently waiting for some big updates to come to Vanilla. And yes, I do still like to play Vanilla Minecraft. Right now, I'm in the home stretch of finishing Agrarian Skies, which is a modded skyblock pack. An old pack, but it was the first pack released for Minecraft that included quests and custom progression. There are a lot more packs that have quests and custom progression, so I had to play the very first one. Apart from ready made packs, I like to make my own modpacks that focus on a certain mod or theme. There are also custom maps and challenges for MC. Truly, when it comes to replayabilty, that game has infinite potential.

Postal 2 has always been my most favorite game to mod. In the past I was mostly interested in installing custom maps and total conversions, but now I'm interested to check out weapon packs and other mods. Fun thing, I'm also a mod developer for Postal 2, and I'm looking forward to learning Unreal Engine so I can make many custom maps. And maybe even a very large total conversion that I've been planning to make for over 15 years. Yeah, I have a long history with modding Postal 2. :)

Amnesia: TDD. I love this game to death, but I never really installed any mods for it. Once I'm done replaying the game, I'll look for custom stories exclusively, since the main campaign is perfect and I don't want to touch it in any way.

Probably a few more games I could mention, but I don't want this post to get super long.

I have not tried many GTA mods, but I think it does have some incredible ones. The reason why I never tried it was because the game itself is a perfect game as it is for me and having plenty of activities for me to enjoy the world as it is. Maybe once I rebuy it and play it again I'll consider it.

With Black Mesa (which is my GOTY for 2021), I want to check out some custom maps mainly and see if there are some mods that improve an already phenomenal game. But I doubt I would install any of those. I love the main game as it is, so I would mostly play with custom maps.

Since I have not got myself into it, nor the Half Life series, I am more than ever eager to play it. I plan on going for HL first before the remake. I hear that it's an excellent game.

Skyrim. Now there is an odd one. I played Skyrim since the first day it was released. And as silly as this might sound, I never modded that game. But I also never finished my first playthrough. Skyrim has probably been one of the most modded games alongside XCOM and The Sims series for me.

I didn't play that much of it, but surely will do too like Skyrim.

Didn't play it that much, but I get what you mean by that. So much potential! So much fun!

Saw this game many time being given on giveaway. I didn't have the chance to play it yet.

Some games just don't need any special touch, as they are perfect already. 😄

It heavily depends on the title. Some games make me content without any mods and I'm done, some are good both ways, especially when you have a quality mod/total conversion/community expansion, etc. There are also games, like Gamebryo crap from Bethesda, which are pretty unplayable without the proper mods ;-) Mods are kinda important part of my gaming experience, always liked tinkering with things, I guess that's why I never could really get deep into console gaming, PC was always my first platform of choice. It doesn't mean I never owned and played on consoles too, though :-P

You got me there! 😋

Tho, honestly I prefer to play vanilla most of the time with some exceptions;

  • QoL & Bugfixes
sometimes Devs won´t get it or don´t bother anymore. eg - TotalWar, since like forever 1st order of business is to get a camera mod with any TW game because otherwise you just can´t see enough of the battlefield (subscription numbers seem to support my claim)
same goes for stat fixes with TW games - unfortunately there´s not a lot, though theres plenty to fix! (the infamous Kisho Ninja in Shogun 2 come to mind)
I´m a bit torn about Rimworld & Paradox strategy games, there´s a lot out there but they often tend to change balance and (in the worst cases) gameplay drastically. Giving me easier access to information that´s already in the game on the other hand is another story..
XCom 2 had many of those, but funnily enough a lot of them finally made it into the game.
  • Cosmetics
those can be fun especially with games you like and spend a lot of time with to give you some variety. For me that´s Rimworld and XCom 2 again, but also Motorsport Manager.
  • Overhauls
these are tricky, because in my experience & opinion most of the time they are half baked and, well, crap. It takes a lot of dedication and work to completely rebalance somebody elses product. Also that product might still be subject to change.. For that reason it works rather badly with Paradox games for example, they seem to overhaul their own games once or twice a year - who could keep up with that.
A positive example might be LongWar for XCom Enemy Within - they had a finished product to work with, but I believe it still took them as long as the original game was in developement, if not longer, to come to a conclusion.

Finally my one and only favorite to play modded in a substantial manner (more than a bit of Cosmetics & QoL) has to be Rimworld sofar. As a self defined story telling generator it seems predestined for it, though with their own expansions meanwhile coming out regularly.. who knows. Overall, if a game ain´t good enough to keep you playing it in the 1st place, a couple mods in most cases
won´t fix that either.

Something I personally avoid with mods too. The only thing I do remember adding in another game called Mount & Blade: Bannerlords was the ability to hit multiple enemies if your blade swung in the direction. Fighting hundreds upon hundreds make the experience really slow and unrealistic. Your swings would end up hurting only an individual, even if you swung and hit 2-3 others. With this mod, you ensure realism, but makes the game more in your favour. The enemy could do the same if I remember, so there's a somewhat balance.

A positive example might be LongWar for XCom Enemy Within - they had a finished product to work with, but I believe it still took them as long as the original game was in development, if not longer, to come to a conclusion.

XCOM series is by far my favourite for that aspect. Although I enjoy the raw gameplay of it, I'm happy to do overhauls once I finished the campaign and run Long War.

I usually play vanilla games. There are some exceptions:

  • Bethesda games (Fallout and Elder Scrolls): I will always start with the recommended mods for a better sky, more useful information, useful crafting etc.
  • Football Manager: after the first install I will get the fresh facepack, metallic logos and flags, real competition and club names, wonderkid list and a couple good-looking skins, and maybe a couple tactics (or at least good corner/freekick settings)
  • MMORPGs: if they are supporting UI modding, I will get some addons to make it more useful for me

Any other games... nope.

Although I don't play football or sports game, I know why you like that. I like to have custom teams too!

All I can remember is probably World of Warcraft. Some JMMORPG's already have a lot of information in the system. Look at Black Desert. Can be overwhelming. 😆

I play games at least once on vanilla to get the original experience and make backup saves before modding.
I don't like mods that stray too far from the original experience or use scripts that may break / alter game saves.
So its usually just model and texture packs. I like improved animations, menus and sounds as well.
Started with Quake 3 Arena on Moddb, Max Payne. Then Doomsday for Doom / Heretic, Duke Nukem HRP.
Really enjoyed modding Skyrim.

I know what you mean. Each game has it's own original feel to it, and I don't want the lore to change too much. I could never make a non-Star Wars game into one or LOTR if that's the case. It just doesn't feel right to me.

I had no idea Max Payne had mods. I never considered checking them out for older games.

Interesting topic! I usually play vanilla, except for

  • games that have significant QoL/stability improvements (like Nier Automata, Valheim)
  • odd mods/texture pakcs to make multiplayer games like L4D2 more fun, without really changing the experience
  • uncensor/nude patches on VNs and games like Senran Kagura
  • extra songs for music/based games if I like them enough

I'm not really a fan of mods that radically alter the game, and sometimes I'm just too lazy to mod a game at all :P

uncensor/nude patches on VNs and games like Senran Kagura

I do this for The Sims for instance, as the censorship ruins the immersion of the game lol. 😅

extra songs for music/based games if I like them enough

This I never considered. If a game has repeatable songs, I turn it off and start playing Spotify in the background while I travel. A game I did this for was Mad Max. Although amazing game, I felt the long drives needed my own music.

I don't get lazy, but can get way too much into it until I break it, and then I spend more time finding the middle line to fix the game and get it playable without crashes.

Actually I missed a word there, I meant music/rhythm base games like muse dash, musynx, friday night funkin' and all other similar games. Though turning off repetitive music tracks and having my own playlist is a must for specific games!

Sometimes when I feel extra brave with horror games, I turn the music off so I have to guess if the encounter is over or not and I can move around safely, definitely adds to the atmosphere!

Usually vanilla only. However, every now and then I get mods, most QoL mods. Rarely do I get gameplay, or other kind of mod, but yes any kind of mod is a possibility, including "cheat" mods. I almost never replay a game, so I mod while playing the game for the first time, only if I feel the need to.
